Ardenwald All Star

Announcements

8950 SE 36 th Ave, Milwaukie, OR 97222

Sheila Shaw, Principal

Dear Ardenwald Families and Friends,

Greetings! I am amazed that March is already just around the corner. Our Kindness Garden is up and growing . Please stop by to see the insight our children provide into making this a better world, one day at a time.

I am happy to let you know there is a strong pattern of praise from visitors to Ardenwald for excellent student behavior and the positive tone in our building. We had guests in the building this week, again, and they went out of their way to let me know (what I already know) that this is a great place to be! Way to go All-Stars!

We are getting close to the time when fifth graders will be taking the OAKS Science test (March

11-15) and third, fourth and fifth graders will be taking the Reading (April 15-19) and Math tests (April 29-May 3). All students will receive instruction from their classroom teacher on how to take these state mandated tests on the computer, as well as, have an opportunity to take a practice test before actually testing.

OAKS tests are one measure of how your student is doing, and this data is best used for us to determine the effectiveness of our programs. The most important thing for you and your student to remember is that these are “take your time and do your best work” situations. These tests are created so students can move at their own pace. The questions are generated based on each child’s performance during the test. It is designed to be challenging for every student. As we did last year, we have waited until late in the year to test students so they can benefit from the most instruction prior to testing. Most students will take each test once, hence the “take your time and do your best work” approach.

As I write this, third grade is considering testing on different dates. If this is the case, you will get detailed information directly from your child’s third grade teacher.

During state testing, we ask the same things as we do through out the year. Please make sure your child is here, on time, rested and ready to learn. Let them know that this is important work.

I know that safety is on all our minds. The District is continuing its work with the Milwaukie

Police and other Clackamas County schools to refine protocols and procedures that minimize unsafe situations. Here at Ardenwald, we continue to adjust communication plans and review all safety procedures. I appreciate your support with modeling safety and security for our students. Signing in at the office, wearing your visitor’s badge, avoiding the playground areas when students are present, and being courteous and cautious in the parking lot, all set the tone for a positive and safe school experience. Thank you!

To be better prepared for a variety of situations, we will be doing some additional drills this

Spring. We will have a lock-down drill and a playground evacuation drill. These will be teaching and learning experiences for students and staff. Please remind your students that these drills are important and are to keep us safe.

Our latest fire drill had students out of the building within 2 minutes and 19 seconds and to the staging area in 3 minutes and 34 seconds. We are proud and pleased with the seriousness our students give these practices. Please reinforce with your child(ren) the importance of moving quietly, as well as, in a safe and orderly manner at all times during these drills. Again, these practices are to keep everyone safe.

Thanks again for all you do to support Ardenwald!
