Social and Emotional Learning(SEL) We know that SEL are important life skills. An important aspect of the holistic development of our students is to enable them to develop SEL. What strategies can we use? Using Restorative Circles has been proven to be effective. What are Restorative Circles ? They are a facilitated way of holding group conversations. Restorative circles can be used successfully in a wide range of situations and environments which call for social emotional skills. They can range from creating community, sharing knowledge, teaching school /societal expectations and values, planning direction, to building and sustaining relationships, exploring and repairing hurt and harm. Objective Workshop Details Facilitators will explain, demonstrate Circle Processes. Participants will experience Circle Processes through hands on and experiential learning on how to use the processes to help students in their Social Emotional Learning, which in turn will help grow strong Interpersonal Relationships among students and between teachers and students. For whom? All Educators - form teachers, discipline masters, counselors, teachers in-charge of CCA, CCE mentors, AEDs, all who work with groups of students. *This course is strictly for AEDs who have completed their Specialist Diploma AED Pre-service training. This is a highly interactive training where participants will o o Explore the Circles Continuum from low level relationship building circles to high end conflict resolution circles. Explore if Circles are just reactive or can Circles be used proactively and be preventative. o o o o o Use Circles to build positive class learning cultures. Use whole class Conferences for dealing with issues that arise within whole class groups. Explore practical Circle activities and the place of games within circles – the use of talking pieces, establishment of guiding expectations and dealing with discipline in circles. Explore use of Circle Work in a staff context. Share fresh ideas, innovations and resources Trainers Greg Jansen Richard Matla Greg Jansen and Richard Matla from New Zealand are experienced facilitators of the use of Circle Processes. They will show participants how they can practice these processes and help students in their social emotional learning and strengthen teacher-student relationship.
