Blood Loss during Thoracolumbar Stabilization and Fusion Procedures
Thomas A. Moore II, M.D., Charles L. Wolff III, M.D., Bassam Hadi, M.D., Mark N. Hadley, M.D.
1. Isovolemic hemodilution is a safe alternative to blood transfusion. 2. Intraoperative blood salvage is
encouraged for trauma and degenerative disease involving four or more levels.

The History of Anesthesia for Liver Transplantation
J. Antonio Aldrete, M.D., M.S., Thomas E. Starzl, Ph.D., M.D.
For the first 178 transplants anesthesia techniques were deviced to provide compatibility with diseased
liver, anhepatic state and transplanted organ. Metabolic changes, extensive bleeding, hypothermia and
anesthetic metabolism problems were found, measured and corrected.

Balloons and Medical Gases: The Collaboration of James Sadler and Thomas Beddoes
Amos J. Wright, M.L.S.
In the late eighteenth century, early ballooning and early research on the human inspiration of gases
combined in the collaboration of James Sadler and Thomas Beddoes. This collaboration is one of the
earliest examples of the medical-industrial research efforts so common today.

ESI vs Paravertebral Reduced Steroids, Dipirona and Propoxyphene for Postlaminectomy Syndrome
J. Antonio Aldrete, M.D., M.S., Uriah Guevara, M.D., O. L. Ceraso, M.D., H. J. Arenoso, M.D.
Patients having post laminectomy syndrome were treated with ESI with MTP or a reduced dose of
MTP, PPX and DPN, administered paravertebral, at L 4 -L 5 and L 5 -S 1 , bilateral. Both were
effective, but morbidity was greater in patients receiving ESI.

Mechanism(s) of Volatile Anesthetics (VA) Inhibition of Agonist-Promoted M3Gαq Nucleotide
Tetsuzo Nakayama, M.D., Ph.D., Masao Hayashi, M.D., David O. Warner, M.D., Alan R. Penheiter, Ph.D.,
Keith A. Jones, M.D.
Halothane is allosterically inhibiting the modulatory effect of nucleotide-free Gα on agonist-GPCR
• Abstract
Role of Caveolae to Volatile Anesthetics (VA) Inhibition of Agonist-Promoted M3Gαq Nucleotide
Tetsuzo Nakayama, M.D., Ph.D., Masao Hayashi, M.D., Alan R. Penheiter, Ph.D., David O. Warner, M.D.,
Anthony K. Jones, M.D.
The effect of halothane on M 3 activation of Gα q nucleotide exchange is not due to effects on
membrane interactions mediated by caveolin.
• Abstract
The Effect of CPB on Outcome in Patients Undergoing Bilateral Lung Transplantation
William A. Lell, M.D., Hunter J. Reynolds, D.O., David C. McGiffin, M.D., Quinton W. Gurley, M.D.,
Gilbert Ritchie, Ph.D.
Patients with PH or PF and longer ischemic times are more likely to require CPB during BLT. CPB is
associated with longer postop intubation but has no adverse effect on survival.

Intravenous Sevoflurane Administration in Pigs Connected to a Rebreathing Anesthetic System
Pablo Otero, D.V.M., Lisa Tarragona, D.V.M., Alfredo Birger, M.D., Diana Quiroga, M.D., J. Antonio
Aldrete, M.D., M.S.
Intravenous infusion of sevoflurane (induction: 0.1 mL/kg/min; maintenance: 0.0065 mL/kg/min) to
pigs produced stable alveolar concentrations (2.2 vol%) and an acceptable degree of central

β-Barrel Protein Modified To Enhance Volatile Anesthetic Binding
Joshua D. Spencer, M.S., John H. Streiff, Ph.D., Alan R. Penheiter, Ph.D., Keith A. Jones, M.D.
Mutagenesis directed by molecular modeling was used to create a VA binding site within a fatty acid
binding protein. The site was created within the fatty acid binding pocket, which did not change the
binding properties of the protein.
