Biography of Dr Hamsaraj Shetty Dr Hamsaraj Shetty, B.Sc, MBBS, FRCP (London & Edinburgh) Consultant Physician with a special interest in Stroke, University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff Honorary Senior Lecturer, Cardiff University Medical School Hamsaraj Shetty graduated from Mysore Medical College, India. He trained as a Lecturer in Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics and Senior Registrar in General Medicine in Cardiff. After working in Southmead Hospital, Bristol as a Consultant Physician for a short period he returned to University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff in 1995. He is currently the lead clinician for Stroke Medicine at the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. He is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Cardiff University Medical School, As a Consultant Physician with an interest in Stroke he led the Bro Taf Stroke project (1996-1998) which was part of the National Demonstration Projects. He leads the multidisciplinary specialist stroke rehabilitation unit at West Wing, Cardiff Royal Infirmary which has been awarded the Charter Mark by the Prime Minister. He started the first specialist stroke prevention clinic in Wales in 1995, the first thrombolysis service (along with his neurologist colleague) in Wales in 2007 and the first 24/7 thrombolysis service in Wales in September 2010. In 2005 he went on a sabbatical to gain specialist experience in Stroke Medicine at Beth Israel and Deaconess Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital & the Lahey Clinic in Boston, USA and also at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, USA. He has played a key role in the development of Stroke services in Wales. He initiated the idea of a Stroke Interest Group for Wales (now called the Welsh Association of Stroke Physicians) in 1998, was its founding secretary and later the Chairman between 2005 and 2007. He was a member of the Service Development and Quality Committee of the British Association of Stroke Physicians between 2006 and 2009. He was a member of the UK Stroke Forum National Committee between 2005 and 2007 and was also a member of its conference organizing committee. He edited the Welsh Stroke Bulletin between 1998 and 2007. He is the RCP Regional Advisor for Stroke Medicine in Wales. He has contributed to a number of multicentre stroke trials. He was the chairman of the Stroke Research Interest Group of the Old People and Ageing research Network (OPAN), Wales between 2007 and 2010. His research interests include stroke prevention, stroke outcomes and anticoagulation. He was the first Asian and non-European President of the Cardiff Medical Society (Established in 1870) in its 141 year history. He is one of the organizing committee members & program co-ordinators of the annual Welsh Stroke Conference, now in its 11th year.
