Pictures from public tour on October 11, 2008.

"Wisconsin Industrial Sand Company, a division of Fairmont Minerals, has three sand mines in

Wisconsin: Hager City, Maiden Rock, and Menomonie. Hager City and Maiden Rock mine the

Jordan Formation, a fine to medium grained quartz arenite which is of upper Cambrian Geologic age. Menomonie mines the Wonewoc Formation, a fine to medium grained quartz arenite deposited in the mid to upper Cambrian geologic period. Stratigraphically the Jordan formation is found to overlie the Wonewoc formation, as seen in the stratigraphic columns below."

A hillside cut in the Northern section of the mine. This shows some of the Wonewoc formation.

The changes in color as a function of depth indicate slight variations in the mineralogy and particle sizes.

View of the mine looking Southwest. This also shows some of the conveyor belts and grading

(sieves) equipment.

Graded sand piles. The sand is being stockpiled so that it can be shipped out during the winter months.

Picture of the sand storage bins. Each bin has sand of a certain size. A conveyor belt runs underneath these bins where sand is placed and moved into trucks for transportation. Operators can provide customers with specific blends or mixtures of sand type and particle sizes.
