Dental Radiography Course
for
Dental Surgery Nurses (DCPs)
Comet Centre
Luton & Dunstable Hospital NHS Trust
Spring 2016
This course has been approved by the College of Radiographers and endorsed by
the GDC DNSTAB and attracts 54 hours of verifiable CPD.
The need for the course arises from the recognition that in dental practice it is
relatively commonplace for the Dentist to instruct the Dental Surgery Nurse to
take radiographs of the patient and to deal with radiographic imaging within their
practice. The course, therefore, aims to ensure that participating Dental Surgery
Nurses can safely use Ionising Radiations to produce high quality dental
radiographs.
Dental Care Professionals who have successfully completed the course will be
deemed to have received “adequate training”* within the meaning of the Ionising
Radiation (Medical Exposures) Regulations 2000. This complies with the legal
requirement for those acting as operators and physically directing exposures. It is
to the advantage of every practice/department to ensure that Dental Surgery
Nurses are trained to the highest possible level thus ensuring that the radiographs
produced are of a high diagnostic standard and are taken with a minimum
radiation dose to the patient. It is also important that they make the best use of
resources and ensure that they produce this high quality service at an
economically viable level.
The course therefore aims to enhance the professionalism and quality of the
service provided to the patient by complying with the Ionising Radiation
Regulations and the Health and Safety at Work requirements.
Formerly a Keele University course this programme has a long and successful
track record. The ‘Radiographic Team’ of Richard and Tim have been involved
in providing high quality programmes for dentists and dental nurses for many
years. Quality is maintained by making programmes appropriate to the needs of
clinical services. Tutors are responsive to student needs, providing
individualised, high quality support and tuition to allow them to maximise their
learning experiences.
The course meets all the requirements for adequate training as set out by the
regulating bodies. It is equivalent to the NEBDN national course and the course
documentation is held by the NEBDN for certification.
