Arts Field Trip Program
Select from the field trips listed. Please make your own arrangements for transportation.
How to apply for the grant:
1. Confirm this is the only grant request submitted for your school this year.
2. Read through the program offerings; select the field trip you wish and contact the facility to
make arrangements and select a date.
3. Complete "Arts Field trip" application form (scroll to the end of this document)
4. Call Sharon Nesbit-Davis, Education/Outreach Director at 815-963-6765, if you have questions
or need assistance in completing the form or designing your project.
5. Submit the application to the Arts Council. Grant must be approved before the project
begins.
Program fees and payment:
Fees per student range from $1.00-$14.00
The Rockford Area Arts Council covers 50% of the cost and the school will be
responsible for the remaining 50%.
Anderson Japanese Gardens

Grades: 7 years and up
Fee: $4.00 per student
Description: The field trip includes a tour of the Anderson Japanese Gardens. Packets will be
given in advance to teachers to copy. Teacher may choose an activity from the packet to do
after the tour (must be arranged in advance). Students need to dress appropriate for
weather with comfortable walking shoes.
Ethnic Heritage Museum

Grades: 3rd- Middle School
Fee: $1.00 per student (2 teachers/chaperones are free. Additional adults: $2.00)
Description: Tour enhances 3rd and 7th grade curriculum and Illinois State guidelines. Tours
can be arranged to address your curriculum needs. Note: The museum plans special exhibits:
November- Armed Services, December-Holiday Traditions, February-Black History, and
March-Women’s History.
Klhem Arboretum and Botanic Garden

Fee: $2.00 per student-no charge for teachers and chaperones. Please provide one adult for
every 8 students.
Description: "Leopold Education Project"
This multi-curriculum offers students a chance to explore nature while developing skills in
Fine Arts, English Language Arts, Social Science, Science and Mathematics. A wide range of
seasonal short essays (1-3 pages long) are incorporated into lessons that allow students to
gain a better appreciation and understanding of what is around them. “The objective is to
teach the student to see the land, to understand what he sees, and to enjoy what he

Docent-guided Gallery Tour
Grades: all
Fee: $2/participant; teachers and chaperones, free
Length: 45 minutes to 1 hour
Participants tour current exhibitions with a docent (tour guide). Tours
focus on featured exhibitions in addition to the museum¹s permanent
collection. Docents often include gallery activities in their discussions.
Be sure to visit during our 66th Young Artist Show (spring 2007). Schedule
early, as tour spots fill quickly!
UP CLOSE & HANDS ON
Grades: all
Fee: $3/participant; teachers and chaperones, free
Length: 1 1/2 to 2 hrs
Students enjoy a guided tour with a docent and a hands-on activity with
Rockford Art Museum¹s Artist-in-Residence. This experience allows students
to experiment with a variety of art materials using design elements and
principles to transform their ideas into a finished piece. Activities vary
with age level and correlate with National, Illinois State, and Local Fine
Arts Goals. Activities vary with each focus exhibition.
NOTE: Teachers and groups may also participate in free, self-guided tours with permission
of the Rockford Art Museum’s Education Dept. Call the Rockford Art Museum for more
information.

Terrific Tuesday
On a Terrific Tuesday field trip, your students will participate in themed classes presented by
Discovery Center Museum, Rockford Art Museum, and Rockford Dance Company. This
immersive and diverse educational experience will expressively engage their bodies and
minds in science and art.
Terrific Tuesday Basic Field Trip
Time: 9:30-12:00
Cost: $9* per student; No charge for chaperones or teachers
Terrific Tuesday basic field trips can accommodate up to 75 students and do not include
museum tours.

From chemistry to colors to moves, we’re mixing things together with outstanding results.
Simple Machines
Grades 4-8
Explore the simple machines that let your body move, use simple machines to make
fantastic art, and learn the science behind simple machines.
Body Basics
Grades K-6
Discover your body from the inside out! Explore the human form in works of art, find out
how your body functions, and use your body to express yourself.

Description:
3 X the fun, 3 X the learning! Students will actively experience concepts common to music,
dance and visual art through a carefully coordinated series of activities in each discipline.
Activities integrate Fine/Performing Arts and Language Arts, and are led by professional
performing artists and museum docents. A limited number of dates are available for the
program on a first-come first-served basis.
Other pertinent info: ISBE goals included in the lessons are 1A, 1C, 4A, 5B, 25A, 26A, and 27A.
Part of each lesson includes experiences in EXTENDED RESPONSE.
