I have a love of massage both as a receiver and a provider. I love dogs and the rationale behind canine behavior. I am ecstatic when I describe/explain the nuances and implications of canine anatomy and physiology. And, I love to share what I've learned, teaching my particular form of canine massage. I have a love of the humanities: art and music, dance and theater, literature and storytelling. I am attracted to activities that require an awareness and development of balance: horseback riding, ice skating, tai chi, marriage. Living my natural gifts has led me on an extraordinary path giving me skills to empower others. "My real work is personal growth and self understanding. With what I have discovered about myself, I can help my students, enabling them to identify their passions and attain the skills they need to create fulfilling businesses providing professional quality canine massage." Jonathan Rudinger is a pioneer in the field of canine massage; and a major player in the evolution and development of canine massage as a credible profession. He has developed a respected reputation among his peers, students and interviewers. Jonathan has been a featured speaker at national AKC, dog training, AHVMA veterinary, human massage, and animal massage conferences, as well as international pet industry trade shows. Traditionally trained as a Registered Nurse and Medical Massage Therapist, Jonathan Rudinger began his career massaging horses. He experienced an epiphany during a television interview. It is from this experience that he created the PetMassage method. Jonathan's initial vision was to teach pet owners to use his methods at home with their pet dogs. His books and instructional DVDs developed into a program to teach passionate dog lovers, the skills they need to enter into the profession of canine massage. Teaching over 300 workshops since 1997, he continues to teach workshops in Toledo, Ohio, at the PetMassage Training and Research Institute. In 2003, Jonathan introduced PetMassage WaterWork, PetMassage techniques that are applied in a warm water pool. In 2009, he became president of the ACWT, The Association of Canine Water Therapy. Jonathan created the International Association of Animal Massage and Bodywork. As its president, he established professional networking, referral and mentoring services for instructors and practitioners. As president, he lobbies at the state level for the safe, legal practice of animal massage and bodywork. In this capacity, Jonathan is called upon to give several interviews and presentations each month. Jonathan was called to service when he came across the alarming statistics from the CDC that stated that more than 4 1/2 million dog bites occur every year in the US; that 90% of those bitten were children; 90% of them were little boys; almost all of them were from either the family dog or the neighbor's dog. Jonathan recognized the need for children to learn canine massage as a means to learning safe animal handling skills. He discovered that elementary school instruction for interacting with dogs is often approached from the perspective of fear and confrontation…a 1950's mentality that every dog is a potential threat. The PetMassage approach is not part of the mainstream curriculum. PetMassage for Kids, coming from a place of love, understanding, empathy and patience, is the only program in the world that teaches canine massage. It is now taught as afterschool and camp programs, and is the coursework for a Girl Scouts of America® Skills Merit Patch. The practice of PetMassage is based on the qualities our pets have taught those of us who pay attention: the virtues of trust, respect, faithfulness, love, and non-judgmental acceptance. They've taught us about intuition and honor, personal space and intimacy. They demonstrate stoic acceptance of fragility and pain, death and grieving, spontaneity, transience and most of all, joy and irreverence. We have learned that we can always move on to love again – understanding we do not need to duplicate the same relationship. We choose to forgive and accept, allowing ourselves, through PetMassage, to again experience joy, balance, inner awareness, trust in our intuition, and wistful vulnerability. 3 PetMassage media kit did you know … 1. PetMassageTM: creation, growth and development “I touched the dog and watched his head loll back into my hands. His tongue flopped out to one side of his mouth and his eyes glazed over in bliss." The decision to teach animal massage began with an epiphany. In the summer of 1997, Jonathan Rudinger was invited to give a demonstration of equine massage for the television station, WTOL, Toledo, OH. As the shoot was ending, his interviewer brought an old yellow farm dog, saying, “Dogs get stiff necks, too. Let’s see what Jonathan can do.” “I became aware that I had something of tremendous value to share. I experienced an immediate and profound insight—an epiphany." "I had the knowledge, the experience and the creative drive to produce courses that would enable pet owners, pet-care professionals and other massage therapists all over the world to use massage to comfort and nurture dogs." This canine massage form would be unique among the techniques taught as vocational training. It would be focused on tracking the subtle shifts of energy within the dog and supporting the movement of the shifts to magnify the natural healing abilities. 7 PetMassage media kit original PetMassage TM workshops, media and programs On-site PetMassageTM for Dogs Workshops Foundation Advanced Prerequisite: Foundation PetMassageTM WaterWork Confident Dog Handling for the Canine Massage Practitioner Refreshers for all above workshops PetMassageTM Satellite School Instructor Training Home study Courses (Massage Therapists and Registered Veterinary Technicians earn CE credits) Basic Anatomy of the Dog (part of the Foundation workshop curriculum) Medical Terminology, Canine Physiology, Kinesiology and Pathology for the Canine Massage Practitioner Confident Dog Handling for the Canine Massage Practitioner Transitions: PetMassageTM Energy Work for the Aging and Dying Dog PetMassageTM Energy Work with Dogs Creating and Marketing Your Canine Massage Business Instructor Training/Licensing Independent Study/Research 10 hour/10 CEU in-depth studies 3 hour/ 3 CEU case studies Training for Pet Parents and Children PetMassageTM for the Family Dog PetMassageTM for Kids PetMassageTM Media: Books Art and Essence of Canine Massage, PetMassageTM PetMassageTM Energy Work with Dogs PetMassageTM for the Family Dog Transitions: PetMassageTM Energy Work for the Aging and Dying Dog Creating and Marketing Your Animal Massage Business Dogs Kids PetMassageTM PetMassageTM Media: DVDs and CDs PetMassageTM for Dogs 1 PetMassageTM for Dogs 2 Dog Handling in Canine Massage, Yoga Consciousness PetMassageTM A Kids Guide to Massaging Dogs PetMassageTM Energy Work with Dogs (audio book) 5-audio CD set PetMassageTM Doggie Songs for Kids (Audio CD) PetMassageTM Media: Anatomical Charts Contours & Boney Landmarks of the Dog Skeleton of the Dog Superficial Muscles of the Dog Dog Joints and Ligaments Chakra & Energy Levels of the Dog PetMassageTM Media: Children's Programs Scout Skills Merit Patch Curriculum for 5-day summer camp curriculum Curriculum for 10-week afterschool curriculum 8 PetMassage media kit books Art and Essence of Canine Massage: Pet Massage for Dogs If you are an individual who is happiest when you are with dogs and know in your heart that you want to help them discover their optimal quality of life through wellness and balance, you are already a member of a very unique "tribe." The PetMassage for KidsTM program teaches children the basic hands-on skills of canine massage and principles of dog handling safety. They learn the basic handling, touching, holding, stroking, and other PetMassage techniques with their stuffed dogs. Confidence in their new abilities grows while important psycho-social skills develop. When PetMassage was introduced to the kids at an inner city YMCA, the outcomes were truly amazing. These kids' only reference to dogs were pit bulls, which were used for dog fighting, as weapons or deterrents, and for guarding. The lesson about the dogs having thoughts and feelings, personal space, and their own forms of communication, based in confrontation avoidance, was new to them. The skills they learned about approaching dogs, of being calm and projecting the feelings of confidence, soon shifted the way that they interacted with family, friends and teachers. One afternoon of experiencing the PetMassageTM approach to dogs dramatically changed these kids lives! lectures & presentations One of Jonathan's goals is to increase public awareness of the many benefits PetMassage TM can have for dogs, and how PetMassage can be a successful and joyously gratifying vocation. Thank you for being a loving teacher to your students." -- Gail, Ohio 13 PetMassage media kit art of animal massage - AnimalPlanet.com Interview Questions 1. What are the key benefits when it comes to animal massage? Enhances general quality of life. Dogs feel better, are healthier, and heal faster when they get massage. Massage increases animal's flexibility, blood and lymph circulation. Massage helps maintain balance, a good appetite and sound naps. 2. Are there any risks involved? The risks for the animals: massage is applied too deep and they can be injured, although most dogs are very forgiving and will tolerate inadvertent abuse just for the attention. If the practitioner doesn't understand canine anatomy she could move a joint into an unnatural pattern. For the practitioner: if the dog is hurting or not in the mood for bodywork, or if the dog is dangerous, snapping and biting may happen. This is uncommon when the practitioner understands and incorporates animal behavior signs and appropriate dog handling skills into her session. 3. In your experience, do certain types of animals respond better to massage than others? My favorite animals to massage are dogs, cats and horses. Most animals enjoy touch and massage. The only ones that I have not had completely pleasurable experiences with have been amphibians. I like working with mammals...warm blooded critters. Some animals are more skittish than others. Llama's are in this group. some are hard to touch, like hedgehogs. Thinking about it, I can honestly say that I am not fond of massaging hedgehogs! 4. What are the most common techniques used in animal massage, and does any one method provide more benefits than another? The most common techniques for most practitioners is stroking and kneading. In our PetMassage school, we encourage our students to slow their pace of massage so that they can more closely observe what is happening in their dogs' bodies. We teach a technique that we call "still-holding," in which one holds the dog and keeps their hands very still to pick up the tiniest of muscle twitches and spasms under their palms. We have found that still-holding has effects similar to cranial-sacral work on humans. Dog's bodies, when they are encouraged to participate in the massage, naturally reeducate themselves and create little lifestyle course corrections. 5. Is there any way to "know" when an animal needs a massage, or any rule of thumb in terms of frequency? Just like humans, dogs could use a massage at least once a month, just for retuning and relaxation. My rule of thumb is when ever a dog is obviously out of balance in body or mind, they need a PetMassage. Regarding frequency: A massage every day is too often. Dogs bodies, like ours, live in a Circadian rhythm. I like to wait for at least two 24-hour cycles before another full body massage. It gives the body time to integrate any tissue re-education that had been initiated. 6. What are the best questions to ask a potential animal massage provider? What kind of training have you had in animal massage? Do you carry business liability insurance (indicates that they are professional)? Are you a member of any professional animal massage organization (like the IAAMB)? Can you provide references or testimonials from satisfied past clients? Do you like to massage (your breed)? 7. Is it possible for pet owners to learn and administer massage themselves, or is it best left to professionals? Yes. Pet owners can learn to give a good basic canine massage. Our PetMassage Training and Research Institute has home-study courses just for the dog owner. The difference between the massage that they give their dogs and one from a professionally trained practitioner is the difference between a shoulder rub from your significant other and a full body massage from a massage therapist. I suggest you get your dog professional PetMassages and provide maintenance bodywork in between. 14 PetMassage media kit special day proclamation July 11th is now PetMassage for Dogs Day in the City of Toledo! 2013 was our inaugural year for celebrating PetMassage for Dogs Day.
