Calibrate a clean and undamaged 100 mL dispensing flat to 100 mL with tap water and rinse with purified
water.
2.
Weigh 5 g of Paracetamol on a dispensing balance and set aside.
3.
Weigh 2.5 g of Compound Tragacanth Powder on a dispensing balance and transfer it to a large
Wedgewood mortar.
4.
Incorporate the Paracetamol into the Compound Tragacanth Powder via the method of doubling. Mix
well.
5.
Measure 10 mL of Red Syrup by conical measure and slowly add sufficient amounts to the powders in the
mortar titrating between each addition. Mix well until a smooth paste is formed and ensure that there
are no lumps present (the rest of the Red Syrup will be added later).
6.
Add sufficient amount of purified water to the mortar and mix until the suspension is pourable into the
calibrated dispensing flat.
7.
Strain the suspension from the mortar to the dispensing flat by a 2 pieces funnel with a single layer of
gauze. Rinse the mortar with purified water. Any lumps from the gauze should be further titrated.
8.
Measure 2.5 mL of Concentrated Chloroform Water with a pipette and incorporate to the dispensing flat.
Cap and shake well.
9.
Add the rest of the syrup to the dispensing flat. Rinse the measure of syrup with purified water to the
dispensing flat.
10. Adjust volume with purified water to 100 mL. Mix well.
11. Remove calibration mark and check the final suspension for lumps and particles.
12. Label appropriately

Triturates and Calculations: multiply everything by a factor of 10x to create stock solution
Weigh 800mg of Methyl Hydroxybenzoate and mix with 200mg of Propyl Hydroxybenzoate by the method of
doubling. Transfer the 1000mg aliquot into a conical measure and make volume up to 10mL with Propylene glycol.
Measure 1mL of the triturate (Compound Hydroxybenzoate solution) containing 80mg of Methyl Hydroxybenzoate
and 20mg of Propyl Hydroxybenzoate to be used in dispensing. √
