Henri Matisse (French, 1869-1954) Robert Rauschenberg (American, born 1925) Pattern Fish Collage Students were introduced to the work of Henri Matisse. At the age of 80, Matisse created elaborate paper cut-outs with bright, beautiful colors. Even when confined to his bed, Matisse was able to draw onto his paper-covered walls using a long wooden stick. The designs were then cut out and arranged into colorful collages. Students also learned about Robert Rauschenberg, an American artist known for his found-object assemblages. Rauschenberg shocked the art world by using non-traditional materials to create his works of art. In the Pattern Fish Collage, students used both traditional and non-traditional art materials to create their final piece of art. Students incorporated paper, ink, tissue paper, watereddown glue, and aluminum foil during the process of making their fish. Lastly, students embellished their fish with intricate patterns.
