EUH 1001 Core II
Lecture Syllabus, Spring 2010
Dr. Elizabeth Furdell

I.
Course description:
Core II examines the major trends in Western and world
politics, society, and culture from the 18th century to the
present. In order to understand contemporary civilization and
to participate in it effectively, it is important to grasp the
historical development of the ideas and institutions that have
shaped the modern world. Beginning with the Enlightenment, we
will study the succession of events that led to revolutions,
wars, colonialism and conquest, culminating in the disastrous
20th century. In addition to political and economic developments
in the modern world, students will explore the social, cultural
and intellectual fabric of the past three hundred years through
readings in a survey text and assigned sources. This class will
meet in a large lecture session every Monday and Wednesday at 9
or 10 a.m., but will break into discussion-sized groups on
Fridays in the place and at the time indicated by your
registration.
