EUH 1001 Core II Lecture Syllabus, Spring 2010 Dr. Elizabeth Furdell M-W 9 a.m., 10 a.m. 39/1009 I. Course description: Core II examines the major trends in Western and world politics, society, and culture from the 18th century to the present. In order to understand contemporary civilization and to participate in it effectively, it is important to grasp the historical development of the ideas and institutions that have shaped the modern world. Beginning with the Enlightenment, we will study the succession of events that led to revolutions, wars, colonialism and conquest, culminating in the disastrous 20th century. In addition to political and economic developments in the modern world, students will explore the social, cultural and intellectual fabric of the past three hundred years through readings in a survey text and assigned sources. This class will meet in a large lecture session every Monday and Wednesday at 9 or 10 a.m., but will break into discussion-sized groups on Fridays in the place and at the time indicated by your registration. II. Required readings: Perry, Western Civilization: A Brief History, 6th ed., Volume II (Houghton-Mifflin, 2007) Voltaire, Candide Hunt, ed., The French Revolution and Human Rights Marx, The Communist Manifesto Achebe, Things Fall Apart Remarque, All Quiet on the Western Front Wiesel, Night III. Grading: First exam = 20% of your final grade; second exam = 25%; final exam = 30%; other assignments (such as book quizzes, journals, maps) in discussion sections = 25%. Exams are administered in discussion section rooms unless otherwise noted. A = 90% of total point total and above, B = 80-89%; C = 70-79%; D = 60-69%; F = below 60%.
