FREMONT HIGH FOREIGN LANGUAGE STERLING SCHOLAR GUIDELINES "For outstanding scholarship and persistence in the study of a foreign language. Students should have made unusual contributions to the field of foreign language study or demonstrated increasing interest in such studies at their school. Rankings received in foreign language festivals should be submitted. Students should also submit a brief resume of language projects or adventures in which they have participated. Nominees should be prepared to demonstrate their ability to communicate in the language of speaking, reading and /or writing. A foreign-born student attending an English-speaking high school may not use English or their native tongue as a "foreign language." ~Deseret News Sterling Scholar Handbook Scholarship: (50%) Number of Foreign Languages Studied A.P. Exam Scores Grades ACT/SAT Score National Exams Foreign Language Festival Ratings Unusual contributions to the field of foreign language Resume of projects dealing with foreign language projects, travel, or adventures Demonstration of ability to communicate Miscellaneous Contributions A student's grades and test scores during high school years will help establish the level of scholarship. The student's persistence and effort also will be considered. Emphasis, however, will be placed on the student's day-to –day performance. Leadership: (25%) Foreign Language Club Presidencies Foreign Language Camp Youth Leadership School Leadership Positions Miscellaneous Leadership Positions The qualities of leadership can be measured in part by the responsibilities placed on a student by his/her teachers and fellow students. Most important is how the student performs under such responsibilities. Evidence of positive and uplifting influence with fellow students will be considered an indication of leadership. Citizenship: (25%) Service to school, community, church or any other organization. Each Sterling Scholar nominee shall have demonstrated a high standard of citizenship throughout his/her high school years. Please read the General Information and Instructions sections of the Sterling Scholar handbook to ascertain eligibility. Foreign Language Sterling Scholar Checklist Assemble a portfolio with information about the following. This does not need to be a scrapbooking masterpiece. It does need to be neat, detailed and organized, and make it easy for the evaluators to see what you have done. Include years and dates. Your portfolio needs to be submitted prior to your interview. Excellence in Scholarship Please include a copy of your transcript, along with a summary of the following details: Number of foreign languages studied A.P.
