Our celebration of National Science and

Engineering Week (9–13 March) began with Mr

Warren demonstrating the excitement of chemical bangs, explosions and flammable gases. On

Tuesday lunchtime, Mrs Goodger organised an electron micrograph competition, and on

Wednesday pupils had the chance to get some hands-on experience of mammalian organs and tissues and be wowed by biology. On Thursday, the Africa Alive! Curious Creatures road show visited with their snake, tortoises, giant African land snails and Madagascan hissing cockroaches.

Mr Green also organised a talk for Space Club by

Mr Steve Randall of the East Anglia Rocket

Society. On Friday, pupils were entertained by

Mr Steve Allman with his Key Stage 3 Best of

Science Show which took place in the Thomas

Theatre. Another recent related event was a visit to the Cambridge Science Festival Schools’

Masterclass and, finally, we wish our Year 8 team good luck in the Salters’ Festival of Chemistry

Challenge at the University of East Anglia after

Easter. Thanks to all pupils and staff who supported our celebrations.

E QUESTRIAN E VENT

K ESGRAVE H IGH S CHOOL !

An Inter-Schools Trot Pole and Mini Jumping competition was held at Newton Hall Equitation

Centre on 18 February 2009. Three riders from

Kesgrave High School took part in the day’s events: Catherine Tween on NHEC’s ‘Rowfantina

Ladybird’ (Tia), Amy Ross on her pony

‘Sovereign’ and Megan McKeary on NHEC’s

‘Magpie’.

The trot pole competition layout was quite tricky and included tramlines, ‘skinnies’, halts and sharp turns! It was a combined individual/team round.

Five schools were represented in the team competition with each team having the highest 3 riders’ individual marks counted towards the team event. In addition, there were riders who were riding in the individual event only, with just 10 places up for grabs. The Kesgrave girls were all individually placed in the competition with

Catherine coming 2 nd , Megan 5 th and Amy 8 th .

This gave them enough points to win the Team

Trot Pole Competition overall – well done

Catherine won the individual jumping competition in a very quick jump-off time of 40.7 seconds, over 3 seconds faster than the second placed rider .

Kesgrave did not take part in the team jumping competition as only Catherine and Megan competed in the jumping event. Unfortunately

Megan was not placed due to refusal at a fence.

She did (after a lot of cajoling) finish her round with no further problems.

Congratulations on a sterling effort by all 3 girls – a credit to Kesgrave High!

Y EAR 10 M ATHS C HALLENGE

Congratulations to our team of 4 mathematicians from Year 10 who so competently took part in the inter-school Maths

Team Challenge held at Kesgrave in the Sixth

Form open area on 5 March. Ten teams from schools in the area took part. With a score of

110 points, Alice, Zack, Matt and Jack were very competitive, beaten only by teams from

Woodbridge School (who won) and St Albans.

The final tie-break ‘Count Down’ question

(needed because both the top teams scored 119) can be seen on the website. See how close you can get to that elusive 916!

In the past, we have hugely benefitted from these schemes, enabling us to gain additional and new sports and computer equipment for all year groups to take advantage of. This year the Sainsbury scheme extends to help the Food Technology

Department. Please can all Sainsbury’s Active

Kids and Tesco School & Clubs vouchers be collected and brought into school – there is a collecting box in the main office.

Also, could you send in the free book tokens from

The Times and Sunday Times and put them in the box in the Library or take them to J7 in C16. The more we collect, the more free books we get for school.

Y EAR 12 H ISTORY T RIP

On Friday 13 March, 12 AS historians travelled down to London to see the

‘Magnificence of the Tsars’ exhibition at the

Victoria and Albert Museum. The displays included Nicholas II’s coronation cloak made from 89 ermine skins; Peter II’s mourning suit, which he had to wear for most of his short reign due to the deaths of family members; and Alexander I’s military uniform which he wore for his coronation and made the Russian army adopt the day after.

Although the exhibition was small, the objects in it gave us a real flavour of the opulence and wealth of the Russian Tsars, and gave students and teachers a greater sense of the period we are studying. We then moved next door into the South Asia gallery to look at the art work and products of British

India. Chintzes, silk fabric, ivory furniture and exotic art were the great attractions of

India for the British Empire, but the most memorable exhibit was probably Tippoo’s

Tiger, a wooden model of a tiger mauling a

European which has moving parts and sound effects! The success of this short trip will hopefully be replicated in the summer in

Berlin when we look ahead to the A2 course.

Kesgrave U15 v Hadleigh U16

Lost 4:1

Kesgrave started the game very slowly and quickly conceded two goals, both from penalty corners which were well placed leaving the GK no chance. The team improved in their performance as the game went on and had many chances that were not put away. Jay Steward got a goal back for

Kesgrave with a perfectly executed penalty stroke which was awarded mid-way through the second half. The final score did not reflect the game, but on balance Kesgrave probably deserved to come "second", although a smaller goal margin would have seemed more reflective of the game. The sweets on the way home in the bus soon eased the pain of losing!
