Vocabulary
1. fraction: A fraction is a number that can name a part of a whole.
Example: 1

2. numerator: the numerator represents the number of equal parts
of the whole you are talking about
3. denominator: the denominator represents the total number of
equal parts in the whole.
4. equivalent fractions: Fractions that name the same amount are
equivalent fractions. The fractions 2 and 1 are equivalent

fractions.
5. simplest form: If you continue to divide until 1 is the only number
that can be divided evenly into the numerator and the
denominator, you find the fraction in simplest form.
6. mixed number: a mixed number is made up of a whole number
and a fraction. 3 1 is a mixed number.

7. like fractions: like fractions are fractions with the same
denominator.
8. unlike fractions: unlike fractions are fractions with different
denominator.
9. decimals: a decimal is a number with one or more digits to the
right of the decimal point.
10. tenths: the first place value position to the right of the decimal
point is tenths.
11. hundredths: one hundredth is one of one-hundred equal parts
12. equivalent decimals: equivalent decimals are decimals that
name the same number, they are equal
13. decimal point: the decimal point separates whole numbers from
tenths, hundredths, and so on.
