Honourable Mention Lake Winnipeg Foundation, Winnipeg This non-governmental organization identifies and supports solutions to restore and protect the health of Lake Winnipeg and its watershed. The foundation supports scientific research, increases public awareness and education, encourages stewardship and advocacy, and fosters collaboration. Sustainability in Pollution Prevention and Product Stewardship Green Action Centre, Winnipeg This non-governmental organization undertakes community-based projects and initiatives focused on waste reduction, sustainable transportation, energy conservation and greener living. Green Action Centre delivers composting workshops and courses, classroom presentations on waste prevention and reduction, the Active and Safe Routes to School program and the Commuter Challenge. Honourable Mention Winnipeg Folk Festival, Winnipeg This arts organization is committed to minimizing waste produced by its office operations and annual outdoor music festival. The music festival’s waste prevention initiatives include reusable plate and mug programs, composting and recycling. Innovation and Research for Sustainability Dr. Nazim Cicek, Winnipeg Cicek is a professor in the University of Manitoba’s faculty of engineering where he is engaged in research on water and nutrient management and biofuel generation. Champion for Sustainability Rachel Galindo, Winnipeg Galindo has been the driving force behind the greening of Polson School, an elementary school in the River East Transcona School Division. Through her volunteer efforts, she has raised funds, introduced worm composting, developed garden areas and planted native trees and plants with student and community involvement. Sustainable Community CentureVenture Development Corporation and BIOS Architecture, Winnipeg CentureVenture Development Corporation and BIOS Architecture renovated and repurposed the Bell Hotel using green building methods to establish a supportive housing complex which provides permanent housing and support services for at-risk populations in downtown Winnipeg.
