The collection, educational programs and breadth of exhibitions place our galleries at the industry forefront. This role promotes the City of Townsville art collection across the country, develops new opportunities to showcase the artwork and artists of our region and encourages greater knowledge and appreciation of art to a wider Australian community. The Travelling Exhibitions Officer will identify and develop partnerships, nationally and internationally, to enable travelling exhibitions and act as custodian of the collections during planning and delivery of these exhibitions. The principal accountabilities of this role include: Coordination of all aspects of the Gallery Services Travelling Exhibitions. SELECTION CRITERIA >> ESSENTIAL Demonstrate knowledge and appreciation of the visual arts and an awareness of the Gallery’s collections as they apply to the work of this position (a tertiary qualification in Visual Arts or equivalent professional experience in the visual arts is essential. Additional Museum Studies and/or Education qualifications would be an advantage.) Highly developed project management skills and experience in contributing to, implementing and maintaining a Travelling Exhibitions program applying the principles of effective risk management. Demonstrated experience in applying appropriate museum standards covering the safe and effective handling, packing, transportation, installation and display of works of art having regard to conservation, registration, exhibition and graphic design requirements. High level interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills showing proven abilities in negotiation, representation, development and maintenance of networks appropriate to a Travelling Exhibitions program. Demonstrated excellence in good business management practices including general administration, financial management, budget development, forward planning, workflow and time management, policy development, administration and evaluation. The Section operates (1) within the local government organisational environment with regards to administrative governance and business systems, (2) in the local, regional, state, national, and international visual arts industry sector with regards to sourcing and staging of exhibitions, developing partnerships and cultural development, (3) within the local community environment with regards to engagement and consultation, and delivery of visual art activities and programs and (4) with corporate and private enterprise to identify and develop sponsorship and partnership opportunities in-line with Council’s frameworks. The implementation of day to day operation of Council’s 2 Galleries involves enabling the staging of events and activities, and ensuring the provision of administrative support services. RESPONSIBILITIES >> MAIN DUTIES Develop and coordinate schedules and administrative systems, such as the Travelling Exhibition asset booking system, Travelling Exhibition changeover schedules, Travelling Exhibition installation and maintenance schedules, Travelling Exhibition proposal listings, Travelling Exhibition correspondence, and databases of clients and suppliers. Oversee and monitor Travelling Exhibition assets, storage and workspaces to ensure Travelling Exhibition assets are catalogued, store rooms are maintained in a safe and accessible manner and consumable stocks are kept to required levels. Develop and coordinate artwork loan contracts, insurance arrangements and logistical art freighting for exhibitions. Research potential travelling exhibitions suitable for Gallery Services and present options to the Manager Gallery Services for consideration; and deal with general enquiries on exhibitions, referring to the Manager Gallery Services when the enquiry requires interpretation of policy or other specialist advice. Maintain and complete appropriate documentation as it relates to the receipt, dispatch and display of Gallery Services Travelling Exhibitions including condition reports, copyright release forms, and photographic records as required. Oversee the receipt, preparation, installation, demount, dispatch and registration of all Gallery Services Traveling Exhibitions, including training and supervising volunteers and participating gallery staff in these procedures as required. Co-ordinate and maintain the Gallery Services’ Travelling Exhibition schedule for major, project, and temporary display spaces. Oversee Travelling Exhibition logistics as required. Undertake regular inspections of Travelling Exhibitions and adjacent areas and arrange for routine maintenance as required. Conduct regular WH&S building inspections ensuring safety standards are met and continual improvements are made.
