About the Time Capsule in Conjunction with the Voices of Hellenism Project:
The Voices of Hellenism Project is more than a historical publication. It is a project that
seeks to empower the Greek communities of San Jose and the Bay Area through
commemorating and celebrating history. Along with the publication, The Voices of
Hellenism Project is creating a time capsule to be filled with historical items that are
important to the people and families of the San Jose Greek community and Bay Area at
large. The time capsule will be a large, plastic box, and it will contain items of historical
significance donated by individuals, families, and organizations of the San Jose Greek
community and elsewhere in the Bay Area. This time capsule will be buried in a neutral
location voted on by the board of directors.
This part of the project is for members from various Bay Area Greek communities
from either the past or the present. People from churches or communities outside of the
Bay Area may contribute if they own a relevant item or if they were part of this
community at one point. The time capsule is not opened beyond the Bay Area. The time
capsule will be buried upon completion of the journal publication. It will be buried during
a burial ceremony during the end event. The main purpose of this is to bury the first
edition of the journal to mark the significance of the achievement. At this ceremony, the
oldest person present will put the box in the ground. In the year 2050, or other year
determined by the board of directors, the youngest person present at the first ceremony
will open the time capsule. This time capsule is mainly for the publication, and it will
include items from various historical groups. This will be a unique time capsule, and it
will not interfere with or be interfered with by any other community time capsule.
Why Contribute to the Time Capsule?
The Voices of Hellenism Time Capsule will be an exciting and memorable way to mark
the significance of the publication of the Voices of Hellenism Journal. If you, your
family, or organization has items such as pictures or other culturally relevant
paraphernalia, then this is your chance to make those items stand out through an
emotionally intense and memorable project. The burial ceremony will honor the oldest
community member, and other important community figures will take turns digging in
the dirt for the burial. The young will watch the old, and moving speeches will be made.
This will be a fun and moving ceremony that will be remembered and cherished for a
lifetime.
Guidelines for Submitting Items:
Items must be culturally relevant. They must have something to do with the Greek
community, Orthodox Church, or other historically significant event within the Bay Area
Greek Community. Those who submit must be involved and in good standing with the
community.
Items should be significant and meaningful to the majority of the people in the Bay Area
Greek community. They should also be meaningful to you but not so meaningful that you
cannot part with them.
Contributors must be part of a Bay Area Greek Orthodox community. It is predicted that
most contributors will come from Saint Nicholas, but this is an independent project, and
contributors will come from everywhere in the Bay Area.
Pictures or art pieces must be appropriate for a general audience. Pictures depicting
nudity, sexuality, or excessive violence will not be permitted. It is recommended to make
copies of pictures you want to submit. You probably want to keep the originals. If others
are in the photographs you plan to submit, you must have their permission as we want to
avoid humiliation.
Organizations may contribute uniforms or other relevant items.
Organizations, families, and individuals should submit a brief, typed statement (one short
paragraph) with their item/s. Statements should include names, addresses, phone
numbers, and email accounts. They should be printed on white 8.5 x 11 paper. They can
be mailed along with the items, but they should be emailed to
abuonocore@vhpprojec.org. You should put “Time Capsule” in the subject line.
Live pets will not be permitted.
All items must be size appropriate. It is not feasible to include large items such as cars,
bikes, televisions, phones, or clocks just to name a few. The smaller the item, the better
chance it will have of being included.
Electronic devices that play music will not be accepted.
Please do not submit human relics or body parts. Please do not submit items with strong
odors or perishable foodstuffs.
Do not submit items that are wet, messy, or slimy.
Clothing submissions should be clean and appropriate. Do not submit under garments.
Do not submit liquids or explosives. Do not submit drug paraphernalia or loaded
weapons. Some unloaded guns may be historically significant.
Religious items are acceptable, but they must be appropriate for the Greek Orthodox
Church.
Items must be submitted in person or via mail. The Hellenic Legacy Project is not
responsible for items lost, destroyed, or stolen prior to the burial date. Items should be
packaged and shipped in proper boxes using proper packaging materials. Please mail to

All submissions must be in by March 1, 2012. They will not be accepted beyond this date
unless there are compelling reasons.
Time Capsule contributors will be invited to the end event where the time capsule will be
buried. More information about that event will follow shortly.
The board of directors will review and either approve or decline all submitted items.
Their decisions are final. You are encouraged to converse with them about their
decisions, but you must remain respectful at all times.
