Itinerary for Geology and Sociology groups

DAY 1

Arrival: San José, bus ride to housing accommodations.

Evening: orientation and survival Spanish.

Day 2 :

City Tour, Lunch, typical Costa Rican food at LA CASA DE DOÑA LELA.

Afternoon: Earth Science Group: The origin of Costa Rican isthmus, geological map of Costa Rica, Geology and diversity, Main geological areas, geology and volcanoes importance.

Sociology Group: Costa Rican video, introductory issues (demography, economy and ten points towards understanding the Ticos) , the Costa Rican society: myth, beliefs and fears, rural sociology in Costa Rica.

Day 3 :

Morning: Fields visits: Earth Sciences Group: Universidad Nacional.

Sociology Group: Hospice.

National Museum.

Afternoon: Cultural seminar for both groups: Culture definition, Costa Rican and American Values, Costa Rican diet, feasts and holidays, where to find culture information, the Tico identity, towards a culture understanding, a colloquium.

Day 4:

Morning: Group I and Group II Classes with visiting instructors. ( 8:00 AM - 10:00 PM)

10:30 AM Both Groups: Tour to Volcan Poas and Waterfalls the Peace.

Day 5:

Morning: Class Group I and II with visiting instrructors.

Lunch at Jalisco Restaurant (Mexican food)

Afternoon: Both Groups: field visit to Gold and Jade Museums. Minery in Costa Rica, history and main mining layers, archeology and Gold history in Costa Rica.

Day 6:

Both groups field trip: Pacific coast, tour ISLA TORTUGA in Nicoya Gulf.

Day 7 :

Morning: Both Groups: History and Government, Indigenous period, conquest and colonial times, the independence years, the national period, current times, Government structure and changes in 2002.

Day 8 :

Both Groups field trip: Volcan Irazu, and Lankaster Gardens.

Types of Costa Rican volcanoes, geological activity and seismic prediction in Costa Rica, volcanoes and pre-

Columbian sites.

Day 9 :

Morning: Classes with visiting instructors.

Afternoon: Field trip with both groups: Butterfly Farm, origin and commercial growth, philosophy of sustainable uses of the biodiversity, women and butterfly farms.

Farewell Dinner in TIQUICIA RESTAURANT (view point).

Day 10:

Airport Departure
