Students are assigned to affiliated agencies where they practice skills related to surgical techniques and principles with the goal of scrubbing independently for common surgical procedures. They participate as members of the surgical team, building on skills developed in SURG 210. Liability insurance is required. 3. Learning Outcomes [These outcomes are necessary to enable students to attain the essential knowledge and skills embodied in the program’s educational objectives.] Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to: Assemble the instruments, supplies and accessory items necessary for hernia repair; surgery of the breast; thyroid and parathyroid; gallbladder and biliary tree; liver, pancrease and spleen; upper and lower gastrointestinal tract; gynecological surgery; genitourinary surgery Assist the surgical team during surgical procedures as an independent practitioner. Demonstrate the ability to anticipate the needs of the surgeon during routine surgical procedures Planned Sequence of Learning Activities [These must be designed to help students achieve the learning outcomes.] I. Scrubbing A. Expanded role as surgical scrub technologist identified with emphasis on anticipation B. Assist the surgeon in the role of second assistant. C. Assist the surgeon in the role of first assistant (facility dependent) D. Continue to scrub on surgical procedures. Independent scrubbing on the following procedures (but not limited to): 1. Hernia repair 2. Breast biopsy 3. Mastectomy 4. Axillary dissection 5. Thyroidectomy 6. Laparoscopic hernia repair 7. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy, appendectomy , tubal ligation 8. Abdominal hysterectomy 9 Vaginal hysterectomy 10. Laparsocpic assisted hysterectomy 11. Colon resection 12. Amputations: BKA, AKA 13. Knee arthroscopy 14. Bunionectomy 15. Simple open reduction of a fracture 16. C-Section 17. Laparoscopic Bowel resection 18. Colon resection II. Case Preparation A. The student continues to pick instruments and supplies required for surgical procedures. B. The student continues to prepare the operating room for surgery. III. Anesthesia A. Orientation to the anesthesia department B. Identification of the roles and responsibilities of the Anesthesiologist and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). C. Follow an anesthesiologist or CRNA for one day 1. Assist with the preparation of the patient for anesthesia. 2. Assist the anesthetist with intubation. 3. Observe regional anesthetics. D. Spend one half day in the PACU 1. Observe the registered nurse performing duties in the PACU. Ambulatory Surgery/Preop holding area-student to spend one half day A. Orientation to the ambulatory surgery/short procedure unit/holding area. B. Orientation to the outpatient admission/discharge procedures. C. Observe the registered nurse performing duties in the preop holding area. D. Observe preoperative interviews by anesthesia care provider and operating room nurse. E. Assist with the transport and preparation of the ambulatory surgical patient (facility dependent) V. Anticipation A. Work closely with experienced surgical technologist in the scrub role to learn organizational skills. B. Scrub on all assigned cases. VI. Documentation A. Complete clinical experience records/clinical logs according to school policy. B. Complete self evaluation forms according to school policy. C. Participate in evaluation sessions with preceptor. D. Complete case preparation records according to school policy. VII. Mentoring Program A. Introduction to SUR 110 Students B. Assist in demonstrations of aseptic technique, scrubbing, gowning, and gloving, case preparation, instrument handling and mock operations. 3. Communicate effective stress management techniques to new students. 4. Model professional behaviors for new students. 5. SURG 110 student may shadow student. VIII. Communication A. Meet with program director/clinical instructor as established by instructor. 6.
