CaLoSiL®
Colloidal nano-particles
of lime for stone and plaster
consolidation
CaLoSiL® in different concentrations
Properties
CaLoSiL® contains nano-particles of lime hydrate [Ca(OH)2] suspended in different
alcohols. Typical concentrations are between 5 and 50 g/L. The average particle size
is 150 nm. The extremely fine size of the synthetic nano-lime results from its preparation, which is based on chemical synthesis. Ethanol, iso-propanol or n-propanol serve
as solvents. Due to the low particle size stable sols are formed which do not sediment
for a long time.
CaLoSiL® is a ready-to-use stone and plaster consolidant. Treatment of stone, mortar
or plaster with CaLoSiL® results in the formation of solid calcium hydroxide after
evaporation of the alcohol, that converts into calcium carbonate in a way similar to
traditional lime mortars by reaction with atmospheric carbon dioxide. All alcohols
evaporate without any residues so they do not harm the stone or plaster. Chemicals
or residues deteriorating stone or mortar are not formed.
CaLoSiL® can be applied using either a flow coating procedure, by dipping, spraying
or injection. It is important that the complete weathered zone of the stone down to
the sound is treated.
Available types of CaLoSiL / Packaging
CaloSiL® is available in concentrations between 5 and 50 g/L. The letters behind the
name “CaLoSiL®” indicate the used solvent, the numbers give the total calcium hydroxide concentration in g/L. E –stands for ethanol, IP for iso-propanol and NP for npropanol. For example, E-25 means, 25 g/L calcium hydroxide dispersed in ethanol.
Standard products are:
CaLoSiL® E-5, E-25 and E-50
CaLoSiL® IP-5, IP-15 and IP-25
CaLoSiL® NP-5, NP15 and NP-50
All CaloSiL® types are available in 500 mL, 1 Liter, 2,5 Liter, 5 Liter and 10 Liter containers.
Properties of formed calcium hydroxide / calcium carbonate
The calcium hydroxide particles formed after evaporation of the alcohol cover the
surface of treated cracks, pores or joints. Dense films of calcium hydroxide films are

formed, depending on the number of treatment cycles and the concentration of the
used sols. Typical particles sizes are in the range of few hundred nano-metres. Their
detection by means of standard optical microscopy may be difficult, the use of SEM
is recommended.
Calcium carbonate formation by reaction with atmospheric carbon dioxide requires
the presence of humidity. Depending on the conditions and the amount of calcium
hydroxide brought into stone, mortar or plaster carbonations takes place within few
days and weeks. After spraying the treated materials with water the carbonation
process can be accelerated.
Penetration behaviour
The penetration into mortar, stone or plaster depends on the following factors:

Characteristics of the CaLoSiL type applied
Structure and surface characteristics of the materials to be treated,
Porosity and capillary rise,
Moisture content of the material
Air temperature and air humidity during the application
When dense materials are treated with highly concentrated CaLoSiL products
(CaLoSiL E-50, CaLoSiL-paste like etc.) the penetration behaviour may be only slow,
especially if there aredense surface layers such as gypsum crusts which prevent its
penetration.
High moisture content also inhibits penetration so when necessary pre-wetting with
ethanol may help to reduce the moisture content of the material.
White haze formation
The formation of a white haze on the surface of the treated material depends not
only on the penetration behaviour of CaLoSiL but also on the evaporation conditions
of the alcohol, which can re-transport nano-particles back to the surface. In addition
if too little time is allowed for carbonation of the nanolime within the treated material
it will not be fixed in place and can be transported to the surface. General rules to
prevent / reduce the formation of white haze are:

Start the treatment with low concentrated products, increase the calcium hydroxide concentration step by step
Avoid the treatment of wet materials, reduce the moisture content by pretreatment with ethanol or ethanol-water mixtures (1:1).
In the case of sensitive surfaces try to use CaLoSiL grey, which has a special
consistency allowing deep penetration without white haze formation
Avoid an “oversaturation” of the treated stone, plaster or mortar. Remove all

CaLoSiL which could not penetrate into the treated material for example, with
a sponge.
Test the addition of small amounts of acetone or heptane.
Times
The alcohols evaporate within a few hours. The carbonation process itself requires
between few days to several weeks, depending on the amount of calcium hydroxide formed and the environmental conditions (humidity, possibility of carbon dioxide
migration).
CaLoSiL® and silicic acid esters
The combination of CaloSiL with silicic acid esters allows the successful consolidation
and strengthening of materials in which pure silicic acid esters do not work satisfactorily alone. In these cases it is recommended to treat the materials with CaloSiL first (for
example E-25 or IP-25) and then apply silicic acid esters after the evaporation of the
alcohol. The calcium hydroxide formed from CaLoSiL acts as an adhesion promoter
as well as catalyst accelerating the hydrolysis of the silicic acid ester. The final
strength is in many cases much higher than can be achieved by single treatment
with silicic acid esters. All commercially available silicic acid esters can be used. Detailed information are summarised in a special technical leaflet.
Mixability with other materials
All CaLoSiL®-products can be intermixed. Blending with ethanol, n- or iso-propanol is
also possible without any difficulties. However, the addition of water can result in the
formation of a gel because of flocculation of calcium hydroxide particularly when
the amounts of water is greater than 10% by weight.
Storage
All materials have to be stored between + 5 °C and +30 °C. When CaLoSiL remains in
unopended, original containers, storage for at least three months is possible. After
that time, agglomeration and sedimentation may occur. The settled particles, however, can be re-dispersed by shaking the closed bottle or by ultrasonic treatment.
The properties of the nano-sols remain unaffected.

flames. Avoid spilling, skin and eye contact. Ventilate well, avoid breathing vapours.
CaLoSiL® reacts strongly alkaline. Do not breathe vapour or mist. Do not smoke. Keep
container closed. Use with adequate ventilation. Wash thoroughly after handling.
Keep away from sources of ignition.

CaLoSiL® „paste-like“
Highly concentrated suspension
of calcium hydroxide nano-particles
Particle size distribution in CaLoSiL “paste-like”
Properties
CaLoSiL® „paste-like“ is a new product complementing the CaLoSiL® product line. It
contains calcium hydroxide nano-particles in concentrations much higher than in all
other products. Based on a special production technique, calcium hydroxide particles in concentrations up to 250 g/L are stable dispersed in ethanol. The particles
have sizes in the range between 50 nm and 1 µm. That means they are greater than
in the colloidal CaLoSiL products but still much smaller than in conventional lime hydrate suspensions.
Applications
CaLoSiL® „paste-like“ is used for filling voids, pores as well as cracks or fissures. It can
be applied for gluing of detachments. The combination with fillers such as marble or
limestone powder allows the preparation of injection grouts or repair mortars with
good flowability. Hydrophilic masses characterised by high porosity and high compressive strength are formed.
It is recommended to use CaLoSiL-“paste-like” in combination with CaLoSiL E-25 or IP25. A first treatment with the nano-sols creates layers of calcium hydroxide which are
able to act as adhesion promoter to the paste-like material, injection grouts or mortars.
Mixability
CaLoSiL®-paste-like can be mixed with all products of the “CaloSiL-family”. Blending
with ethanol, n- or iso-propanol is also possible without any difficulties. Mixing with
water may result in the sedimentation of the particles, but is possible in principle.
Packaging
CaLoSiL-“paste-like” is available in 500 mL, 1 Liter, 2,5 Liter and 5 Liter containers.
Storage
CaLoSiL® „paste-like“ has to be stored between + 5 °C and +30 °C. In unopended,
original containers, storage for at least six months is possible. Settled particles can be
re-dispersed by shaking the closed bottle or by ultrasonic treatment. The properties
of CaloSiL “paste-like” remain unaffected.

CaLoSiL® „grey“
Colloidal calcium hydroxide nano-particles
for stone, plaster and fresco consolidation
Properties
CaLoSiL® „grey“ is a stone strengthener as the other products of the CaLoSiL® family
but characterised by special properties concerning consistency, appearance and
application possibilities. CaLoSiL® „grey“ contains calcium hydroxide nano-particles in
concentrations of 5 and 25 g/L, respectively. These are stable dispersed in ethanol.
The particles have sizes between 50 and 250 nm. .
Specific properties of CaLoSiL® „grey“ are:

Colour
As the name it already indicates, the colour is, in contrast to all other materials, grey. That results from a special production technology.

Consistency
CaLoSiL® „grey“ has the same concentrations like the other CaLoSiL® products but it seems “thinner” and looks more transparent.

Penetration behaviour
Caused by the thinner consistency, CaLoSiL® „grey“ penetrates better and
faster, also in relative dense structures, than the other products.

White haze formation
There is no or just a slightly white haze formation despite using concentrations up to 25 g/L.
Applications
CalosiL-grey” is used as strengthener for stone, mortar and plaster. It is, due to the
low viscosity, especially suitable for the treatment of relative dense structures. Also
the consolidation of powdering surfaces, for example on wall paintings or frescoes,
can be realised in a favourable manner.
Mixability
CaLoSiL®-grey can be mixed with all products of the “CaloSiL-family”. Blending with
ethanol, n- or iso-propanol is also possible without any difficulties. Mixing with water
results in gel like solutions. The addition of high amounts of water causes the flocculation of calcium hydroxide particles.

Use
The sample box contains selected types of CaloSiL® which are suitable especially for the consolidation of powdering surfaces, wall painting and frescos.
CaLoSiL® E5, CaLoSiL® IP5
CaLoSiL® E5 is used especially for the consolidation of powdering surfaces. Loose particles as well as pigments are glued together or on the surface.
CaLoSiL® IP5 needs longer time for the evaporation of the solvent. Deeper penetration and higher strengthening is possible. This depends, however, in many cases also
on the structure of the material to be treated.
CaLoSiL® E25, CaLoSiL E-25® „grey“
Both products contain relatively high calcium hydroxide concentrations of 25 g/L.
They are used for deep structural strengthening as well as for the consolidation of
surfaces. Due to its low viscosity and thin consistency CaLoSiL® E25 “grey“ is especially suitable for applications on surfaces. The tendency to form white hazes is extremely
low in comparison to other products.
CaLoSiL® “paste-like”
CaLoSiL® paste-like is a high concentrated nano-lime product. The solvent is ethanol
as in all products of the CaLoSiL® E - series. It is used to fill small cracks, joints or openings. It can also be used to glue loose particles together or to stabilize detachments.
Mixing with fillers such as marble or limestone powder offers the possibility to prepare
special injection grouts or repair mortars.
Storage
All CaLoSiL® types have to be stored between + 5 °C and +30 °C. In unopended,
original containers, storage for at least three months is possible. Settled particles can
be re-dispersed by shaking the closed bottle or by ultrasonic treatment. The properties remain unaffected.

Use
The Test-Kit is composed for first tests to characterise the action of CaLoSiL E-25 on
different materials. The results will give an overview about:
-
penetration depth
strengthening of the material
white haze formation
rate of carbonation
The Plexiglass rings are to fill with loose, original material. Then, saturation of the material with CaLoSiL can be realised by dropping it on the surface until saturation is
achieved. Repeated applications are possible after evaporation of the ethanol. The
carbonation process can be followed by using the phenolphthalein solution. For that,
phenopthalein has to be sprayed on the surface that shall be characterized. A red
color will be visible when unreacted calcium hydroxide is present. The sample is then
still strongly alkaline (pH > 10) and further carbonation is possible.
An option is also the aftertreatment with silicic acid esters. That should be realised
within one week after the treatment with CaLoSiL®.
If needed, CaLoSiL® E25 can be diluted with ethanol. Dilution with water, however, is
possible only in limited extent. The addition of increasing amounts of water result in
the of gel like solutions followed by the flocculation of the calcium hydroxide particles.
Ethanol or Ethanol-water mixtures can be used also for pr-wetting of the materials to
be consolidated.

The sample box is available in two sizes:

Characteristics of the products
All products contain colloidal particles of calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2, lime hydrate)
stable suspended in different alcohols. The particles have sizes in the range between
50 and 250 nm. Consolidation / strengthening is achieved by carbonation of the
calcium hydroxide particles by atmospheric carbon dioxide after evaporation of the
alcohol. All materials can be applied using either a flow coating procedure, by dipping, spraying or injection. It is possible to combine the CaLoSiL-products with silicic
acid esters.
CaLoSiL® E25
CaLoSiL® E25 bases on ethanol as solvent. It can be used for strengthening of porous
stones, mortars and plaster. Characteristics are fast evaporation and good adhesion
to the surrounding stone / materials
CaLoSiL® E50
Due to the high concentration of suspended calcium hydroxide particles CaLoSiL®
E50 is suitable especially for the strengthening of highly porous / destroyed materials.
It can be also used for gluing of flakes and filling of small cracks and pores. It is to regard that the high calcium hydroxide can cause the formation of white hazes on
treated surfaced.
CaLoSiL® IP25/ CaLoSiL® NP25
CaLoSiL® IP25 and CaLoSiL® NP25 contains iso-propanol (IP) or n-propanal (NP) as
solvent. Both alcohols evaporate slower as ethanol. A deeper penetration than by
CaLoSiL E 25 can be achieved.
Mixability with other materials
All CaLoSiL®-products can be intermixed. Blending with ethanol, n- or iso-propanol is
also possible without any difficulties. In contrast to that, the addition of water results,
when amounts greater than 10 wt.-% are added, in the formation of solutions characterised by a gel like consistency. Higher water amounts results in flocculation of the

CaLoSiL®-micro
Calciumhydroxid-micro-particles
Properties
CaLoSiL®-micro is characterised by properties wihich are between the nano-sols
(CaLoSiL E, IP or NP) and conventional lime hydrate supsensions. It contains lime hydrate (Ca(OH)2) particles having sizes between 1 and 3 µm, which are dispersed in
ethanol. The calcium hydroxide concentration is 120 g/L.
Applications
CaloSiL®-micro is a sepcially designed and produced calcium hydroxide suspension
fort he strengthening of stone, mortar and plaster. It is used for the consolidation of
detached surfaces as well as for filling of coarse cracks, openings and joints. The addition of stone flour (for example marble, limestone) allows the preparation of special
injection grouts and repair mortars. CaloSiL®-micro can be mixed with all products of
the CalOSiL-family. That allows the creation of systems characterised by a defined
particles size distributions.
Pretreatment of the areas in questions with CaLoSiL E-25 is recommended. The
formed calcium hydroxide particles cover the treated surfaces and enhance the
consolidation and strengthening.
Packaging
CaLoSiL®-micro is available in 500 mL, 1 Liter and 2,5 Liter containers.
Storage
CaLoSiL® -micro has to be stored between + 5 °C and +30 °C. In unopended, original containers, storage for at least three months is possible. Settled particles can be

properties of CaloSiL ®-micro remain unaffected.

CaloXiL - Injection grout
In comparison to other injection grouts the speciality of this mass is the way of production. One of its raw materials is nano lime. As filler stone powder is used with very
small particle sizes. The injection mass has a particle size distribution from 0,1 to 6 µm.
This is much smaller then in well known products that often contain cement or hydrated lime.
But there are more advantages then the particle size. The flowability of the mass is
very high. That means very deep and close cracks could be reached. Because of
the solvent from the nano lime we have short times for drying. This is important for
using the mass in areas that are not easy to reach.
Typical properties are:






36 % porosity
4,3 N/mm² compressive strength after 30 days
1,1 N/mm² bending strength
23 wt.-% water uptake
0,4 % shrinkage
hydrophilic
Because of its properties the injection grout can be applied to solve various problems
such as for:



the creation of capillary active zones
bridging for mortar surfaces, mortar structures and masonry
gluing of single mortar pieces
The composition of the injection mass is also very good for the application in combination with historic mortars.
