Course Description and Course Objectives:
Algebra 2 will begin with an inspection of linear models and systems of linear equations and their graphical
representations. With this foundation, we will organize data with transition diagrams and matrices, construct
systems of inequalities. Next we will take an expanded look at functions and relations. Quadratic and other
polynomial functions will be analyzed in depth, as well, and identified in explorations of falling objects and
projectile motion. We will also explore exponential, power, and logarithmic functions and their relation to
models of growth and decay. Our studies will then lead into rational functions and conic sections, and how
these interesting topics are connected to business, science, art, and other applications in the real world.
Algebra is your key to whatever field you will enter. Math is relevant and fun, and it will enhance your critical
thinking abilities!
Student discovery is at the heart of our curriculum and it is filled with engaging investigations of mathematical
concepts. Cooperative learning projects, writing assessments, and observational assessment will be used
extensively. Do not be intimidated! Your teachers care about you as a student and enjoy mathematics. Math
is a universal language, and it is our goal for you to learn by discovery. This means that you must take
responsibility for your education. We want you to question things and wonder why they work. It is our goal
for you to become successful mathematical thinkers who can thrive in the real world. So, if you want to learn
Algebra… you will! What you may not realize is that you already use Algebra in your everyday lives; these
concepts are not new … just a new way of seeing things!
Course Requirements:
1. Required Supplies: pencils, notebook paper, 3-ring 1 1 2 ” binder or bigger with at least 5 dividers*
2. Requested Supplies: graphing calculator** or 4-pack AAA batteries, 4-pack multi-colored dry erase
markers, package of #2 pencils
*Organization is a key factor in being successful, thus each student is expected to keep an organized 3-ring
binder. The binder will be part of a major grade each nine weeks.
**The Pflugerville ISD Math Departments recommend the TI-83+ or TI-84+ Edition graphing calculator. TI-83+
calculators are kept in the classroom for use of students, but can not be checked out for home use.
Format and Procedures:
1. The teacher and administrators will handle tardy procedures in accordance with school guidelines.
2. If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to check with your teacher to determine the material
missed, complete the material and submit within the next two class periods.
3. If you miss a test, you are responsible for making arrangements to take the test within two class
meetings. If the student is absent on the day of a review, they are still responsible to take the test on
the assigned day. Only when a student misses a day of instruction of new course content will they
not be asked to take the test.
4. If you plan to be absent from class for a school sponsored activity, you must tell your
teacher BEFORE that class and make arrangements to complete all assignments, quizzes,
and tests that will be missed, BEFORE YOU LEAVE for that activity. When you return
to class, you are expected to perform as if you had been present for the class/classes
missed.
5. If you are absent the day a project or assignment is due, it is due the day you return to class.
6. Students scoring below 70% on a major grade will be allowed to retake a more rigorous assessment
after completing prerequisite work. All retesting must be complete within five days of receiving the
graded test. The higher grade, with a maximum of 70%, will be recorded.
7. Prerequisite work:
a. Accurately correct all missed problems of the assessment on the given correction form.
b. Students must attend tutorials with a HHS math teacher to complete the correction form.
c. A test correction form signed by a parent/guardian and a HHS math teacher that helped
correct the assessment.
8. Conduct: Be SAFE, Be RESPECTFUL and Be RESPONSIBLE (come to class on time and prepared)!
Grading:
80% - Major Grades (Tests/Binder Check Projects)
20% - Minor Grades (Quizzes/Daily Work/Homework, etc.)
Major Grades:
Each major grade will reflect a student’s mastery of an Algebra 2 concept. For example on a test, each concept
that is assessed will be given a separate major grade. Projects will also be given periodically and will count as a
major grade. Points will be deducted on any projects turned in after the assigned due date. All work must be
submitted by the end of the three week grading period to avoid a grade of 0.
Minor Grades:
Daily work (homework/in class work) will be assigned daily! Also, homework will be assessed through frequent
quizzes (both announced & unannounced). Other assessments may include warm-ups, writing assignments,
exit tickets, group activities, and notebook checks.
Academic Integrity:
Each student in this course is expected to abide by the Pflugerville ISD Code of Conduct and Student Handbook
with regards to Academic Integrity. Any work submitted by a student in this course for academic credit will be
the student’s own work unless otherwise specifically directed by the teacher.
