February 7, 2007 TO: Robert Mrtek, Chair Senate Committee on Educational Policy FROM: Margaret Grosch Director, Programs and Academic Assessment I am submitting for review and action by the Senate Committee on Educational Policy the attached Revision of the Master of Public Health Comprehensive Program in the following concentrations: Quantitative Methods in Biostatistics, Community Health Sciences, Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, ABET-Accredited Industrial Hygiene Program in EOHS, Epidemiology, Health Policy and Administration, and Public Health Informatics. The revision was approved by the Committee on Educational Programs in the School of Public Health on November 27, 2006, and by the Executive Committee in the School of Public Health on December 4, 2006. Attachment Copy: B. Neuberger Revised 2/23/07 1 Title: Revision of the Master of Public Health Comprehensive Program in the following concentrations: Quantitative Methods in Biostatistics, Community Health Sciences, Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, ABET-Accredited Industrial Hygiene Program in EOHS, Epidemiology, Health Policy and Administration, and Public Health Informatics Sponsor: School of Public Health Description: Revise requirements for the MPH Comprehensive Program in the following concentrations: Quantitative Methods, Community Health Sciences, Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, Epidemiology, Industrial Hygiene, Health Policy and Administration and Public Health Informatics. Revisions include: 1. A core course for the MPH (BSTT 400, Biostatistics I) is increasing from 3 to 4 credit hours. 2. There are new course numbers assigned to courses listed in the Quantitative Methods concentration: BSTT has been renumbered to BSTT 505 (Logistic Regression and Survival Analysis 2sh); BSTT 430 renumbered to BSTT 506 (Design of Clinical Trials, 3 hours) and BSTT 440 renumbered to BSTT 507 (Sample and Estimation Methods, 3 hours) 3. An additional course will now be required in the Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences concentration: EOHS 405 (Environmental Calculations, 2 hours). 4. The Health Policy & Management concentration has been revised. Changes include the simplification of Enrichment course requirements (while keeping some flexibility); and striking a different balance between requirements for policy and management courses. In addition, the “Health Services Administration and Policy (HSAP)” track has been eliminated. See “Catalog Statement” section below for specific course requirements for each concentration. The above changes result in changes to total hours required for the degree in some cases as follows: MPH with Concentration in Quantitative Methods – changing from 49-54 to 50-55 hours MPH with Concentration in Community Health Sciences – changing from 43-58 to 44-59 hours MPH with Concentration in Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences – changing from 42-60 to 43-63 hours Revised 2/23/07 2 MPH with Concentration in ABET-Accredited Industrial Hygiene Program in EOHS – change from 53 to 54 semester hours MPH with Concentration in Epidemiology – remains the same at 52-54 hours MPH with Concentration in Health Policy and Administration – changing from 52-60 hours to 52 hours MPH with Concentration in Public Health Informatics - changing from 49-51 to 50 to 52 hours Justification: 1. BSTT 400 was increased by 1 semester hour to add introduction to statistical analysis data software content to the course. 2. Renumbering courses from the 400- to the 500-level reflect their placement in the curriculum as advanced courses in the curriculum. 3. EOHS 405 has been added to the EOHS concentration to assure a basic understanding of the computational aspects of environmental exposure assessment; and 4. The changes to the HPA concentration reflect suggestions made by an external advisory panel of public health practitioners. The HSAP track was eliminated when the Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) degree was established. Catalog Statement: Proposed Existing MPH Comprehensive Program with a Quantitative Methods Concentration (49-54 semester hours) MPH Quantitative Methods Concentration Core Requirements (19 semester hours) MPH students concentrating in Quantitative Methods must complete all of the SPH requirements for the MPH degree.
