People Rejoice As Jesus Enters Jerusalem Guide Discussion & Activity – March 28-April 1, 2012 Grades K-4 Key Question: How can we honor Jesus? Bible Background: Mark 11:1-11 (Spark Story Bible, pp. 454-459; Spark Bible, p. 1115) Key Verse: “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow. In heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:10-11 (Spark Bible, p. 1304) Lesson Focus: Kids will discuss ways to make Jesus the most important thing in their lives. CHECK-IN TIME: Share your “highs and lows” from the past week. In the opening video, how did the people celebrate Jesus? (Feel free to read the Bible Story: Spark Story Bible, pp. 454-459; Spark Bible, p. 1115) Jesus rode a donkey along the road to Jerusalem. People rejoiced and praised and celebrated Jesus. How do we celebrate and praise Jesus? We show other people that Jesus is King in our lives when we worship, sing, pray, tell others about him, and reach out in loving and kind ways. Let’s tell everyone about our King Jesus! BIBLE APPLICATION ACTIVITY: Praise Palms Supplies: green construction paper, praise statements, glue, markers, scissors, hole punch, and paper fasteners. Distribute green paper and praise statements. Have students cut apart the praise statements. Have children trace one of their hands four times on the green paper and cut out. Glue one statement on each hand/palm. On the backs of the palms, children may draw or write something that represents the statement on the front: Jesus loves me – a way that Jesus shows that love Jesus forgive me – something that you need forgiveness for Jesus is God’s Son – what do you think Jesus looks like Jesus takes care of me – how? Punch one hole in each palm and use a paper fastener to hold together each child’s set of palm branches. 1 BIBLE MARKING: Grade K-2: Read the following verse aloud. Grade 3-4: Help your kids find today’s key verse in their Bibles. Read the key verse aloud and have kids highlight/underline it in their Bible. Key Verse: “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow. In heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:10-11 That's a lot of words. Let's break it down a bit so we can figure out what the verse is saying. “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow.” - What do you think this means? (We should respect and honor Jesus. How do we do that?) “...and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.” - What do you think this means? (A lord is kind of like a king. He is a ruler or leader over a big country where a lot of people live. That means that Jesus Christ is Lord. He is the most important, famous, wonderful Lord and King over all the world! Who’s the most famous or important person you can think of? When you see that person on TV or in a movie or in the news, what do you feel like doing? We may like famous, important people such as the president, a movie star, or a sports star. When we see these people, we may feel like clapping, celebrating, and shouting, “I like you! You are awesome!” Well, you know what? Jesus Christ is Lord of the whole world, the whole universe, everything! We love Jesus and think he’s awesome. We can clap, celebrate, and cheer for Jesus our Lord! CLOSING BLESSING/PRAYER: Have students share prayer concerns. PRAY: Lead children in the following prayer, pausing after each line so they can repeat the phrase. Dear Jesus, (Dear Jesus) You are Lord. (You are Lord.) I love you. (I love you.) Help me honor you this week (Help me honor you this week) With my words (With my words) And with my actions. (And with my actions.) Amen. (Amen.) 3/28-4/1/12 K-gr4 Guide Discussion & Activity 2
