Active Membership - 2014
Vincent Matthew Billock
Matthew made application for Junior Membership in the SAR in 2008, the first such membership for the
Arthur St. Clair Chapter. He was born in 2001, the son of Vincent Alan Billock and his wife, Bambi
Lynn (Fetters) Billock, and the grandson of Chapter member Robert A. Fetters. Matthew lives with his
parents and sisters, Amber and Rachael, in Dayton, OH. Matthew is a sixth grade honor student in
Bellbrook Schools. Matthew is interested in all sports, Boy Scouting, chess, and is a ‘”Server” at his
church. Matthew’s 2009 membership was based upon Patriot George Fetters, a defender of forts and the
frontier at Fort Fetters in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. George also paid a “supply tax” and was I the
local militia, while living in Bedford Township, Bedford County, PA.

Ronald Lowell Chaney
Ronald has led a very active life in Hillsboro, Ohio, where he has lived for his 89 years. Being the
youngest of the six children of Kirby and Lida Chaney, Lowell grew up in a close knit farming family.
Six generations of Chaney men were lifelong residents of Highland County. He married his best friend,
Rachel Elizabeth (Betty) Vance, in December 1943, just before shipping out for two years of service in
the United State Navy. They were married 49 years. Lowell, as he is known by friends, was a Fireman
1st Class on the USS Prairie. After his discharge, in January 1946, at the end of WW II, he supported
his young family working as an electrical contractor. Lowell has wired quite a number of the new homes
that were built in the Highland County area as well as being the primary electrical repair contractor for
the county offices, libraries and local businesses. Lowell served on the Hillsboro Zoning Board/Planning
Commission for over 25 years. He recently retired at the age of 88 from his life’s work as an
independent electrician and is enjoying time with daughters, Patricia Young, Sandra Simbro, Betty Jean
Hopkins and their families, including seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Lowell’s SAR
Patriot, Samuel Carey, is his maternal g-g-g-grandfather and an early pioneer of Highland County. On a
return trip from Virginia in September 1832, Samuel became ill and died just west of Chillicothe. He is
buried at Salt Creek, Ross County. Patriots, Stephen Hussey Sr. and James Underwood, also migrated
to Highland County from North Carolina after the Revolutionary War. Laughlin Campbell remained in
North Carolina. Family genealogy and stories from relatives have always been a pass time for the
Chaney family. Lowell is a member of the Southern Ohio Genealogical Society, First Families of
Highland County and the Ohio Genealogical Society. He was very proud to be able to document his
lineage through the society, Sons of the American Revolution and received the SAR Military Service
Medal from his Chapter in 2012.

John David Cox
John David and his wife, Rose Marie Cox reside at 3947 Kimberly Drive in Springfield, Ohio. They are
the parents of three sons, Gregory, Bradley and Shawn. Two sons, Greg and Shawn, together with a
grandson, James (Greg’s son), are also members of the SAR. John retired from Navistar International
(International Harvester) after 37 years of service. He joined the SAR in 2012 by right of descent from
Anthony Sims Davenport, who served in the Berkeley Co., Virginia Militia and helped to build Forts
McIntosh and Laurens.

Shawn Alan Cox
Shawn was born in Washington Court House and raised in Springfield, Ohio. He now lives in
Washington C. H. Shawn earned the Eagle Scout rank in 1990, while a member of the Tecumseh
Council, BSA. In 1989, he attended the National Boy Scout Jamboree in Fort A. P. Hill, Virginia. He is
a member of the National Eagle Scout Association; the Ohio Genealogical Society; the First Families of
Ohio; the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels; the Society of the War of 1812 and the Sons of
Confederate Veterans. Shawn is a Past Camp Commander of Henry Casey Camp 92 and is Junior Vice
Commander of the Ohio Dept., Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. Shawn became a member of
the SAR on June 14, 2006 (Flag Day) and is descended from Sgt. Anthony Sims Davenport, who served
in the Virginia Militia and helped to build Forts McIntosh and Laurens.

Robert Arthur Fetters Jr.
Robert and his wife Janet Louise live at 1389 Porter Drive in Chillicothe, Ohio. As a youth, Bob
became an Eagle Scout, and attended the 1973 National Jamboree. He graduated from Unioto High
School, near Chillicothe, and in 1981, received his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from
Ohio University. Robert is a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and for several years,
served on the Board of Directors of 1st Capital Enterprises. He is an employee of Glatfelter (paper mill)
in Chillicothe. Robert’s patriot ancestor is George Fetters, a defender of forts and the frontier at Fort
Fetters in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. Robert Jr. has also verified 2 other patriot ancestors, one of
whom was Isaac Dearth, his Mother’s ancestor---giving him one more proven Patriot ancestor than his
father. He became a member of the SAR in 1997.

William Alan “Bill” Fetters
Bill and his wife, Rebecca (Hines) have two children, Candice “Candy” Lynette Fetters and William
Bradley Alan Fetters, who is also a member of the SAR. They are most proud of their son and wife
Sarah’s three children, their Fetters grandchildren. Bill did his military service in the Army Reserves.
Bill is a retiree of American Electric Power. He and his wife “Becky” worked together as volunteer
coaches in Zane Trace H.S. women’s High School Softball for over 20 years. Prior to that he also
coached in the “Little League” and independent softball and baseball efforts of his own children. For
many years, they have also been partners as re-enactors in full pioneer dress, in many programs of the
area, and as members of the “Christian Family Pioneers”. Both Bill and his wife have been very active
in their Church (Trinity United Methodist) in Chillicothe, and in its Ecumenical efforts through the
Emmaus program. Bil is best known as a member of the Southern Ohio Hillbilly Band, appearing
locally and as far west as Wyoming. William A. Fetters’ joined the SAR in 2010 using his patriot
ancestor, Johann Michael Fetters, builder of Fort Fetters and a member of the Bedford County,
Pennsylvania Militia from 1778 to 1782.

William Bradley “Brad” Alan Fetters
Brad and his wife, Sarah and children, Christian, Briana and Noah now live in Ross County. However,
Brad was a Captain in the US Army and in 2006 completed his 2nd tour of duty in Iraq, prior to his
discharge in December 2006. During his 1st tour there, he and his family were stationed in Europe. A
Chillicothe native, he was an outstanding High School athlete. Brad received a BS degree in
Accounting from the University of Rio Grande. Currently, Brad is employed by General Mills in
Wellston, OH. He became a member of the SAR in 1997 and his patriot ancestor was Johann Michael
Fetters, builder of Fort Fetters and a member of the Bedford County, Pennsylvania Militia from 1778 to
1782. Brad received the SAR Military Service Medal from his Chapter in 2012.

Robert Arthur “Bob” Fetters
Robert and his late wife Bernice Marvene (Dearth) lived at 215 Dun Road in Chillicothe. They are the
parents of Robert A. Jr. (Janet), Bambi (Mrs. Vincent Billock) and Brendy. Bob was born in Highland,
Ohio and was Valedictorian of his Centralia (now Zane Trace) H.S. class in Ross County, Ohio. In
2003, he served as Master of Ceremonies for the All School, 1953, 50th Chillicothe-Ross County Class
Reunion. He played trombone in the All Ohio Boys (State Fair) Band and was a four-year member of
the marching band at Miami University (Ohio). Bob was a 1957 graduate of Miami University where he
earned a BA in Chemistry, and of Ohio University where he earned an Executive MBA degree in 1979.
Academically, at Miami, he served in the Student Senate and he was a member of Phi Eta Sigma
(Freshman Scholastic Honorary), Gamma Theta Phi (Chemistry Honorary and founding President on the
Miami University campus), Pi Mu Epsilon (Mathematics Honorary), Lambda Chi Alpha (a social
fraternity), and Omicron Delta Kappa (a Leadership Honorary). He taught Physical Chemistry while in
graduate school at Michigan State University, and later, Production Management at Ohio University
Chillicothe. Most of his working career was spent with the Mead Corporation in Chillicothe, and he has
continued for the past 17 years as a Consultant to the successor companies. Bob retired as Manager of
Product Safety from the Mead Corporation in 1996, after 37 years of service. He is retired from active
participation in the Paper Industry Management Association (PIMA), where he served as President of
the Ohio Chapter, and is a like retiree of TAPPI (The Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper
Industry), in which he served as Education Chairman in the Miami Valley of Ohio for several years.
Robert was granted over 20 US product and process patents in paper and paperboard production, and in
packaging. Bob is a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and he served for several years on
the Administrative Council, and as a member and Chair of the Finance Committee. He was a life long
Scout and Scouter (BSA). He holds the Eagle Scout and Silver Beaver Awards, and the Woodbadge
Beads, and was the Chief Logan Council Scoutmaster at the 1964 National Jamboree in Valley Forge,
Pennsylvania. He was a Vigil Honor member of the “Order of the Arrow.” Bob has served as a
Scoutmaster, Explorer Advisor and as District and Council Commissioner and Council V.P. and
President. In 1976, Bob co-chaired the Union-Scioto School District successful levy campaign to “Save
Our Schools.” Bob’s hobby is family history and genealogy, and as a volunteer, has developed and
taught courses in genealogy. He has membership in numerous Genealogical and Historical Societies
and is a member of the “First Families” of Ohio, Western Pennsylvania, and Adams, Clinton, Highland,
Montgomery and Stark Counties in Ohio, Wayne County in Indiana, and Blair and Bedford Counties in
Pennsylvania. Bob is also a member of the “Descendants of George Washington’s Valley Forge”
(DVF), “Flagon and Trencher: Society of Descendants of Colonial Inn Keepers,” and the “Baronial
Order of Magna Charta.” He has been a volunteer at the Ross County Historical Society and the Ross
County Genealogical Society, and at the local Mormon Church (LDS) Family History Center. Bob
became an SAR member in 1988 and his patriot ancestor was Lt. David Walker who served in the North
Carolina Militia. Bob has also documented 42 other SAR patriot ancestors.

Curtis Elbert Fleisher
Curtis and his wife, Janet Marie, are the parents of David Curtis and live just outside of Washington CH
at 3702 US Rt. 22 SE. He received his AB Degree in education from Capital University and MA from
Ohio State University, with work completed on his PhD. Curtis was a math teacher for 6 years, a High
School Principal at 4 schools over 22 years, and a life member of the OEA. Curtis retired as a school
administrator and is currently semi-retired from his insurance and investment business. He received the
Martha Jennings Scholar (Education) award in 1975, the Melvin Jones Fellow Award (Lions) in 1990
and 3 International Lions’ President Awards, and was listed in Whos Who Among Business Leaders of
America in 1972. He was named a Kentucky Colonel in 1995, and was the campaign manager for Floyd
Newberry, Jr. in his 1995 successful campaign for International Director of Lions Clubs. Curtis is a
Mason, holding many degrees, offices and honors (such as Ohio Priory No. 18 Knights of the York
Cross of Honor, the Sovereign Master Harry E. Sark Council No. 186 Allied Masonic Degrees and
Hospiyaler of Fayette County for the York Rite Body), Good Hope Lions Club (District Governor of
Lions International, 1989-1990), and a member of the American Legion. Since 1984 he has been a
member of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association, Fayette County Retired Teachers (2 years as
President and Treasurer for 4 years), and is a member of the Fayette County Genealogical Society. He is
a life long Lutheran and active in his Church, the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Washington Court
House, where he has been a Sunday School teacher, served on the church Council, and currently serves
as assistant minister. Curtis had a 2 year enlistment in the US Army from 1954 to 1956, serving during
the Korean War for 17 months as Administrative Assistant in a Company of the Instructions Office (Sp4) of the Infantry School at Fort Benning GA. In 1998, Curtis received the Korean War, SAR Veteran’s
War Medal. Curtis became a member of the SAR in 1996 and is descended from Henry Fleisher, a 2nd
Lieutenant in the 12th Virginia Regiment of Foot Soldiers.

Myron Frazier Gearhart
Myron and his wife, Sue, live at Z Acres, 2141 Lutz Road, Chillicothe, Ohio. They are the parents of
Byron P. Myron is a graduate of Kingston High School and attended 4 years of Agricultural Classes. In
1939 Myron became an Eagle Scout. He entered the Navy in Mar 1942 and received an honorable
discharge in Jan 1948. He continued to serve in the Navy Reserves from 1948 to Jan 1952, seeing active
duty during the Korean conflict. In 1998, Myron received the SAR War Medal, with the two bars for
the wars in which he served. Myron is a long time farmer and is still active in agriculture along with his
wife and son. Myron is a member of the Circleville Presbyterian Church where he was a deacon and
trustee, was a member of the Chillicothe - Ross County Public Library Board for 21 years and President
for 4 years. He is also a 60 year member and Past Master of the Masonic Lodge, Kingston OH; 50 year
member Scottish Rite Masonry, Columbus, OH, member Landmark COOP Board, member and Past
President Ross County ASCS Committee, and Past President Ross County Farmer’s Club. Myron
joined the SAR in 1950 and was a member of the original Chillicothe Chapter. His patriot ancestor was
Ulrick W. Lutz who served as a private in the Berks County, Pennsylvania Militia. He has also verified
3 other patriot ancestors.

Michael Edward Geron, MD
Doctor Geron and his wife Barbara live at 30622 Orr Road, Circleville, Ohio. He and his first wife,
Carol (deceased) restored this old Federal Style brick home over the first 14 years of their residence
there. They are the parents of Nichole Marie, and Kristen Michelle. Doctor Geron is a retired Family
Practice physician who practiced in Circleville from 1976 through 2010, but has partially retired from
practice. He has been serving as Pickaway County's Coroner since 1985, was a Past President of The
Ohio State Coroner's Association, and currently serves on it's Board of Directors. Michael has served as
Past President of the Pickaway County Medical Society and a Past President of the Berger Hospital
Medical Staff. He served as a Clinical Instructor and a Clinical Assistant Professor with the Ohio State
University Hospital. He volunteered as Medical Director of Williamsport Emergency Medical Services
for over 20 years. Dr. Geron served as a team physician for Logan Elm High School's football team for
17 years. He was the Chairman of the Pickaway County Heart Chapter in 1997-98 and was Special
Gift's Chairman in 1981-82. Michael became a member of the SAR in 1987 and is a descendant of
Sylvanus Tuttle, who was a private in Captain Keen's company in the Morris County, New Jersey
Militia.

Allen Dale Griffiths, O.D.
Dr. Griffiths is a practicing optometrist and has served on numerous community boards and
organizations. He and his wife Patricia reside at 321 East Street in Washington Court House, Fayette
County, Ohio, in an 1875 Victorian which has been restored to the way it looked in 1875. The house
has been featured in 3 issues of Victorian Homes magazine and one issue of Window Fashions
magazine. They are the parents of a son Derek Allen Griffiths. Allen is a running enthusiast, having
participated in 54 marathons in 37 states through 2008. Allen joined the SAR in 2008 based upon the
service of his ancestor, Major James Boyd of the Third Battalion, Northampton County, Pennsylvania
Militia.

Nicholas Hamilton
Nick and his wife Ashley live in the small town of Minford, Ohio, which is in Scioto County. He is a
senior at Shawnee State University studying adolescent to young adult education in integrated social
studies with a minor in history. Besides having an interest in the teaching profession he enjoys hiking
and traveling. As well as being a member in the SAR he is a member in the National Council of the
Social Studies. His Patriot Ancestor is Pvt. James Maiden who served in the Philadelphia campaign and
the winter encampment at Valley Forge under the command of Colonel John Green in then 10th Virginia
Regiment

Dale Vernon Hartley
Dale and his wife, Edmona “Eddie” Hartley, are the parents of two daughters and four grandchildren.
They reside in Chillicothe, Ohio. Dale retired as superintendent of maintenance after more than 40 years
service to the Mead Corporation. He is past commander, Detachment of Ohio Sons of the American
Legion, where he also held all other elected offices at the local and state levels. Other organizational
memberships and offices held include the American Legion Post 62 Sons, the VFW Post 108 Men’s
Auxiliary, the AMVETS Post 4 Sons, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the B.P.O. Elks Lodge 52, the
Kingston / Adelphi Masonic Lodge, the Royal Arch Masons of Ohio, the Royal and Select Masons of
Ohio, Chillicothe Commandery Number 8 of the Knights Templar, the Ross County Shrine and Shriners
International, Columbus, and the Colonial Williamsburg Capitol Society. He is a past member of the
Joshua Sill Civil War Roundtable, and a Kentucky Colonel. As financial officer of the Post 62 Sons,
Dale helped organize and fund the restoration of the Revolutionary War, Civil War, and World War I
(Doughboy) statues, located in Chillicothe’s picturesque Yoctangee Park. He also spearheaded
fundraising for lighting the flags of the new Veterans’ Memorial on Yoctangee Parkway. In the mid1980’s, he helped initiate “Operation Santa Claus,” which ensured holiday gifts for all children enrolled
in Ross County’s Head Start (pre-school) program. He remains active in veterans’ affairs and family
and community projects. An SAR member since 1992, Dale’s patriot ancestor was John Gates (“Getz”
or “Getts”), a private in Captain Hays’ Company in the Continental Line.

Robert Elroy Grim
Robert and his wife Charlotte Ann live at 5367 St. Rt. 72 South, Sabina, Ohio. They are the parents of a
son, Irven Robert. Irven and his wife Carolin have three sons: Jason, Michael and Joshua. Bob
graduated from Bloomingburg High School, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of
Maryland and a Master of Education degree from Xavier University. He was a teacher at Miami Trace
High School from 1967-2001. He served as President of the Miami Trace Education Association in
2001. He is a member of the Fayette County Retired Teachers Association and a life member of the
Ohio Retired Teachers Association. A veteran, Bob served a four year enlistment in the United States
Air Force during the Vietnam War and was assigned to the Strategic Air Command (SAC) and served a
two year tour of duty at Nouasseur AFB near Casablanca, Morocco in North Africa. He is a member of
American Legion Paul H. Hughey Post No. 25 in Washington Court House. In 2006, Bob was inducted
into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame by Ohio Gov. Bob Taft. He served 20 years on Ohio Selective
Service Board No. 15 which covers Clinton and Warren Counties (1990-2010). Bob was the national
commander-in-chief of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War 2002-2003. He was elected in 2007
to serve a three year term as the National Commander of the Sons of Veterans Reserve with the rank of
Brigadier General. In 2010 he was re-elected and promoted to the rank of Major General becoming the
first person to hold that rank in the over 100 year history of the Sons of Veterans Reserve. He was
elected Governor General of the National Society Sons of Colonial New England in 2005; President of
the Ohio Society of the War of 1812 (1993-1996); National Registrar General of the General Society of
the War of 1812 (2002-2008) and was elected Registrar General Emeritus of the General Society of the
War of 1812 in 2008. He is a member of the Ohio Genealogical Society; First Families of Ohio, Settlers

Robert Lewis Kelley
Robert was born in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. When Robert joined the SAR he was living at 6528 George
Ave. in Hillsboro, Ohio. He and his wife Margaret Maloney were the parents of Douglas Paul, Jeffrey
John, Susan Lynn and Gregory Allen. Bob was awarded the SAR War Veteran’s Medal for his service
in WW II. He became a member of the SAR in 1997. Robert was a descendant of Thomas Mounts who

Robert Ellsworth Kidnocker
Robert and his wife Nancy Jean live at 2984 Bridge Street, just south of Chillicothe, Ohio. They are the
parents of Karie Leight, Robert Ellsworth III and Peter Shane. Bob served in the Air Force and was
honorably discharged in Oct 1961. Bob received the SAR, Veteran’s War Medal for his service during
the Vietnam War. He is employed as an electronic technician at Glatfelter (paper mill) in Chillicothe.

Commerce and retired after serving 42 years in various management positions at Mead Papers. He
served in Korea with the 7th Infantry Division. He received the SAR, Veteran’s War Medal for his

Donald Lewis Martin
Don is an Ohio native, raised in Miami County about 45 miles north of Dayton, Ohio. He is a 1982
graduate of Miami University with a BA in History. He also played midfield on the Miami Lacrosse
Club. In 2001, he received a Master’s of Education Degree from the University of Rio Grande. Don
served in the United States Air Force from April 1983 until Jan 1991, first as an aircrew member on the
C-130 Hercules cargo aircraft and later in administration. He was stationed at Little Rock AFB in
Jacksonville, Arkansas, and Elmendorf AFB, Anchorage, Alaska. He and wife Sherry, a native of Los
Angeles, California, married while both were on active duty at Little Rock. Daughter Jennifer was also
born there while son Dustin was born in Anchorage, Alaska. Don received the SAR Veteran’s Service
Medal from the Chapter. He has been employed by the Waverly City School system since 1998, and
teaches High School Social Studies and Science. He also works as a mentor for the University of Rio
Grande’s graduate program and occasionally teaches courses for the university. He joined the SAR in
2006, served as Vice President in 2008, and was elected President for the 2009 year. Other
organizations he’s associated with are the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War where he has served
as the Commander of Enderlin Camp #73 since 2006. He also serves as the Department of Ohio

Roger was born in 1929, and resides on Cutright Drive in Chillicothe. He and his late wife, Mamie

retiree of the Chillicothe Telephone Company. He joined the SAR in 2012, based upon his descent from

James Edgar Smith
James Smith was born in 1938 in Pike County, Ohio to James R. and Ida E. (Sutton) Smith. He enlisted
in the USAF, serving from 1956 to 1962, and graduated high school from the USAF Institute of Japan.
Jim and his wife Patsy A. (Oyer) were married in 1960, and have two children: James W. Smith and
Mary Elizabeth Smith Grooms. He became a Firefighter/EMT for the City of Chillicothe in 1966 and
retired in 1989. Jim is a member of Scioto Lodge 6 F&AM, 32 Degree Scottish Rite, Knight Templar in
York Rite, and is a Kentucky Colonel. He is a member of the American Legion, VFW and a past
District Commander of Amvets. Also, Jim is of Native American descent and a member of Ani-TsaLagi Cherokee Nation. Jim descends from Private and Pensioner, Allen Christian, who served two tours

Maurice Lee Vititoe
Lee and his 2nd wife wife, Lenora Evelyn Tyo live at 50 Cameo Lane in Chillicothe. Lee’s first wife and
Mother of his children was Frances Kay (Volbrecht), who passed away in 1990. The children are Renee
Michelle Vititoe and Kevin Lee Vititoe. Lee is an oil and watercolor artist, but is retired. In 2009, Lee

Tony and his wife, Vickie Lynn, live at 1995 Ottawa Drive in Circleville, Ohio. He is a graduate of
Jefferson High School in Lafayette, Indiana; attended Indiana State University, Indiana Vocational
Technical College and is a graduate of the Ohio State Barber College. Tony has his own barbershop in
downtown Circleville. Tony is a member of Hedges Chapel United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge
#123, Lafayette Indiana, Scottish Rites Ohio, Shriner, Elks Lodge #77, Boy Scouts of America, Indiana
and Ohio Genealogical Societies, Ohio and Pickaway County Historical Societies. He was an Eagle
Scout, and a former Scout Master and District Advisor of the Simon Kenton District, Evangelism
Committee Chairman at Hedge Chapel, Zoning Board member Circleville Township, past President

Joseph William Albright Joseph and his wife Marilyn Ann had lived in Chillicothe on Orange Street
and they were the parents of Andrea Lyn and Jason Michael. Joseph was a Major in the US Army when
he became a member of the SAR in 1988. His patriot ancestor was Peter Dum (Thum), a private in Von
Heer’s Troop of Light Dragoons and a member of George Washington’s Guard. Peter is buried in
Adelphi, Ross County, Ohio and a special dedication was held at the grave in 2008 by the National
Society, Ohio Society, German Society, and the Arthur St. Clair Chapter of the SAR. Joseph’s last
know residence was in Tennessee.

Timothy Lee Barada Tim and his wife, Marie, currently live at 19 N. Malone Road, Chillicothe. Tim
was raised in Chillicothe, and graduated from Chillicothe High School in 1971. He served in the US
Navy submarine service and was discharged in 1978. Tim received the SAR Military Service Medal
from his Chapter in 2009. He is a graduate of The Ohio State University, with a BS degree in
Mechanical Engineering. He is a licensed professional Engineer in several states, including Ohio. Tim
and his family departed the area in 1985. They lived for many years in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where they
raised two children, Eric and Jill. Eric is a U.S. Air Force pilot, currently stationed in Little Rock, AR.
Jill is a Civil Engineer in Dallas, TX. Tim’s parents, Pat and Bob, reside in Chillicothe. [Tim is the son
of former FBI Agent, Robert Barada, the 1st recipient of the Arthur St. Clair Chapter’s “Law
Enforcement Award.”] Tim’s hobbies include gardening, backpacking, building long rifles, and flying.
Tim joined the Iowa SAR in 2005. He transferred his membership to the Arthur St. Clair Chapter in
2007 when he moved back to Chillicothe. Tim’s ancestor was Silas Tinker, who served as a Corporal in
Captain Jones Company under Colonel Jonathan Latimer in 1777. Silas Tinker was born in Lyme,
Connecticut, and died in Ashtabula County, Ohio. In 2012, Tim decided to suspend his SAR
membership.

Wenner Botkin Wenner and his late wife Rachel are the parents of John Wenner, Linda Ann, Mary
Beth and Sara Pauline. In WWII, Wenner was a master sergeant in the 462nd Bombardment Group.
Wenner received the SAR WW 2 Veteran’s medal in 1998. He was the owner and operator of a lawn
supply store in Chillicothe. In 2009, Wenner decided not to renew his membership in the Arthur St.

John Franklin Dearth Jr.
John and his wife Maxine lived at 302 Fairway Ave. in Chillicothe, Ohio. They are the parents of a
daughter Anne Elizabeth. John is a member of the Walnut Street United Methodist Church, a member

John served in the US Navy Jun 1944 to Jun 1946. He served on the USS Vinton AKA-83, in the

Jonathan James Forte Jonathan, at age 24, joined the SAR in 2003 He was descendant of Moses
Tyler, who served in the capacity of Lt. in Capt. Jacob Ide’s (Atlteborough) Company, Colonel
Daggett’s Regiment and marched to RI on alarm on 8 Dec 1776. Jonathan is a Civil Engineer, and was
married to the former Candice Marie Salerno. Jonathan was beginning his career at the time of joining
the SAR and lived in Oklahoma and later Denver. He and his brother Matthew were yet to complete
their education or establish their careers and they maintained SAR membership with the Arthur St. Clair
Chapter for only one year. Matthew later rejoined and hopefully Jonathan’s return to the SAR will
occur in the future, once he has established himself.

Matthew Tyler Forte Matthew, at age 20, joined the SAR in 2003. He was a descendant of Moses
Tyler, who served in the capacity of Lt. in Capt. Jacob Ide’s (Atlteborough) Company, Colonel
Daggett’s Regiment and marched to RI on alarm on 8 Dec 1776. Matthew has a BS degree in
Journalism from Kent State University. At the time of his joining the SAR, he resided with his parents,
Joe and Sheryl (Tyler) Forte, at 523 Douglas Drive, Circleville, but he and his brother Jonathon were yet
to complete their education or establish their careers. They maintained SAR membership for only one
year. Later, Matthew Forte renewed his membership with the Camp Charlotte, Circleville Chapter.

John Patrick Highland
John was born and raised in Chillicothe and now lives at 1095 Oak Tree Drive, Kettering, Ohio. He and
his wife Joann Elizabeth are the parents of John Patrick and Mary Katherine. John served in the US
Navy beginning in 1962 and then served in the Navy Reserve. He was honorably discharged in 1970.
John joined the SAR in 1994 and is a descendant of John Bickel, a private in Captain John Sneider’s
Company Northumberland County, Pennsylvania Militia. In 2009, John resigned his membership due to
declining health, his age and travel limitations.

Joseph Nelson Hoyt Joseph and his first wife Nancy had three children. He and his second wife, Ann,
live on Rt. 28 just outside Chillicothe, Ohio. In WWII, Joseph served in the Sea Bees and was stationed
in Tsingtau, China. Joe joined the SAR in 1950 and his patriot ancestor was Captain Joseph Hoyt who
served in the New Hampshire Line.

Carl Everett Jividen Carl and his wife Frances Ellen were the parents of Carla and Renee and they
lived just outside Londonderry, Ohio. In WWII, Carl served as a Lieutenant in the Army Air Force and
Army Air National Guard from 1942 to 1950. He received the WW 2, SAR Veteran’s War Medal from
the Chapter in 1998. Carl joined the SAR in 1992 and is a descendant of John Dewees, who served in
the Kent County, Delaware Militia.

Thomas Walker Kennedy Thomas became a member of the SAR in 1997, and since his retirement as
a military and civilian procurement officer, now lives with his wife Nan in California. Thomas’ patriot
ancestor was Baliff Kennedy of the 6th, 5th, and 4th Classes, 6th Company under Capt. Benjamin Keable
in the York County, Pennsylvania Militia. In California, Tom proved two more Patriot ancestors, but
Tom’s fate is unknown (dropped from SAR membership and/or perhaps deceased).

David May
David and his wife Sharon lived at 429 E. Paint Street, Washington CH, Ohio. They are the parents of
Emily Christine, Laurie Ellen, and Erin Michelle. David joined the SAR in 1997 under the sponsorship
of his Uncle, Chester May. His patriot ancestor is Henry Connelly, a Captain in a horse company of the
North Carolina Militia. David allowed his membership in the Arthur St. Clair Chapter to lapse in 2009.

John Joseph Motes
John and LaVersa Jean are the parents of John Berry, Joseph Ernest, LaVersa Lee and Laura Jean. They
live at 6186 St. Rt. 159 just outside of Chillicothe, Ohio. John is a retired design engineer and teacher.
He became a member of the SAR in 1997 and his patriot ancestor was Jacob Moats, a private in the
Virginia Military Troops. In 2012, John elected to not renew his membership in the SAR.

Randall Howard Rhinehart Randy and his wife Karen Kay reside at 503 Bowdle Road, Chillicothe,
OH. He is a graduate of Unioto High School and Hocking Technical School, and is employed in the
funeral service industry, with Fawcett-Oliver-Glass & Palmer. Randy served in the US Navy, and was
stationed in San Diego, California. He became a member of the SAR in 2000, as a descendant of Simon
Rinehart, a private in Captain Graybill’s Company, in the Maryland German Regiment. Randy’s father
Darrell, is a deceased Compatriot, and perhaps some day Randy will rejoin us to complete his family’s
Revolutionary War legacy with his Mother who served as the DAR Regent of the Nathaniel Massie
Chapter.

Wendell Dewese Schaller Wendell is a retired forester who lives in Chillicothe. He and his wife Ruth
Ann are the parents of Susan Davis. Wendell served in the US Marines from July 1952 to Sept 1954
and then in the US Marine Reserves until 23 Jun 1961. He was discharged with the rank of Captain. In
1998, he was awarded the SAR, Korean Veteran’s War Service Medal. Wendell became a member of
the SAR in 1983 and his patriot ancestor was Samuel Dewese a private and then a recruiting sergeant.

Ernest Loran Sutton, MD, MPH Ernest and his wife Janet moved to Chillicothe February 2004 to
accept the position of Chief, Gastroenterology at the VA Medical Center after retiring as a Colonel, US
Army Medical Corps with thirty years service. In September of 2007, Ernie accepted a full-time faculty
position as an academic general gastroenterologist at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr.
Sutton had elected to maintain an Associate membership with our Arthur St. Clair Chapter, while
joining the General Arthur St. Clair Chapter in Greensburg, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. As a
youth he became an Eagle Scout and Silver Air Scout, and served on the staff of the 1964 and 1981
National and 1965 World Jamborees. Later he became a Wood Badge Scouter and served as a District
Roundtable and Unit Commissioner. In his church he worked as a Sunday school teacher. Originally
hailing from Charleston, SC, he moved to Chicago, IL for middle and high schools then returned to
Charleston to attend The Citadel where he joined the SAR South Carolina Society in 1969. After being
commissioned in the US Army, he attended the University of Illinois School of Medicine and Graduate
School in Chicago. Later he graduated from the US Army War College, Carlisle, PA and the Uniformed
Services University Masters of Public Health program. His military career took him to Airborne-Ranger
school and overseas for twelve years in Panama and Germany. There he served as Corps and Command
Surgeon, and Hospital Commander earning him the Legion of Honor, DOD Distinguished Service,
Armed Forces Expeditionary and Humanitarian Service Medals. After arriving in Chillicothe, he
graduated with the Class of 2005 Ross County Leadership “Pathfinders” program. Both Janet and he
enjoy the cultural arts and history, which they combine in all their vacations and weekend trips. His
patriot ancestors were Lemuel Foster, who served as a sergeant in the Massachusetts Militia; and
William Ridgway who served as a private in the South Carolina Militia attached to Brigadier General
Francis Marion’s “Swamp Fox” Brigade. During 2007, he served our Chapter as Secretary and Chair,
Eagle Scout committee and he continued his Associate membership with our Chapter through 2012.

Kuddy Scott Thomas When Kuddy joined the SAR in 1988 he was a resident of West Union, Adams
County Ohio and a member of Ohio National Guard unit Co. A, 147th Infantry Battalion in Batavia,
Ohio. He was awarded, but never received, the SAR, Veteran’s War Service Medal for his participation
in Desert Storm. Kuddy’s patriot ancestor was George Wittenmeyer, a private in Co. A, Rockhill
Township Militia in Bucks County, Pennsylvania

Robert Eugene Wilson Robert and his wife of 58 years, Elnoma Viola (Newman) live at 842 Atwater
Ave., Circleville, Ohio. They are the parents of Susan Kathleen, and Robert Daniel. Robert was a
former manager of The American Loan Company in Circleville and retired after 33 years. He worked
another 20 years at the Mader-Peters Funeral Home in Circleville, retiring from there in 2002. He is a
member and a past President of the Kiwanis Club and also past President of the Chamber of Commerce
in Circleville; a 50-year member of the Community United Methodist Church, and a member and past
President of Pickaway County Sportsmen Club. Robert served as a front line Infantry Rifleman in
WWII, in Italy (Anzio) and in France where he was taken Prisoner of War. His greatest gift to
Pickaway County was his collection of WWII memorabilia, now on display at the local museum.
Robert supports the American Red Cross and has donated over 24 gallons of blood. He became a
member of the Arthur St. Clair Chapter of the Ohio Society of the SAR in 2003 and his patriot ancestor
was John Kerns, a private in the Pennsylvania Continental Line. In 2007, Bob moved his primary
membership to the Camp Charlotte Chapter, in Circleville, but remained an Associate member of the
Arthur St. Clair Chapter, but dropping that dual membership in 2013.

Ned Richard Young Ned and his wife Rebecca Jeanne are the parents of Ronald Richard, Rosalyn
Carole and Patricia Louise. They live at 304 East Mound Street, Circleville, Ohio. Ned is a graduate of
Amanda High School and the Openheimer’s Ohio Technical. He has worked as an electrician in Ohio,
Illinois, Chillicothe VA, the Piketon Atomic Energy plant in Piketon, and was the owner / operator of
Circleville Electric Company. Then, for 20 years, he worked as Senior Electrical Design Engineer at
Ross Laboratories in Columbus. His responsibilities took him to Michigan, Virginia and to Holland
where he spent a year to help build a new European plant. After retiring, Ned did a lot of traveling and
did some consulting on several electrical projects. In 1943, Ned joined the Navy and served in a Sea
Bees unit for 2 ½ years in the South Pacific. He remained in the Navy as a reservist until 1953. He
received the SAR, WW 2, Veteran’s War Service Medal in 1998. Ned is active in the Pickaway County
Soldiers’ Monumental Association and the American Legion, as well as several other organizations. He
became a member of the SAR in 1998. His patriot ancestor was private Adam Crieutz, a private in the
Northampton County Pennsylvania Militia. In 2007, Ned moved his primary membership to the Camp
Charlotte Chapter, in Circleville, and did not re-register as an Associate member of the Arthur St. Clair
Chapter for 2009.

Grandview Cemetery. David and his wife Martha were the parents of Susan Sivaslian and Betsy
Maggenhoffen and lived in Chillicothe where he was an attorney. David served in the US Army, 7th
Regiment and then in the Military Intelligence Service. He served from 7-22-1942 to 12-11-1946 when
he was honorably discharged. David’s patriot ancestor was Joseph Saltar (Salter) who served in the
Monmouth County, New Jersey Militia. David became a member of the SAR in 1950.

Elmer S. Barrett was born 20 Oct 1912 in Monroe LA and died 3 Mar 1997 in Chillicothe, Ohio. He
attended Chillicothe Schools, Miami, and the Ohio State Universities. Elmer became involved in
numerous engineering highway and railroad projects. He was the Ross County Engineer for 2 years and
later Division Deputy Director of the Ohio Department of Highways. From 1949 to 1969 he was the
owner and principal Engineer for Elmer S. Barrett and Associates Consulting Engineers. In 1965 he
became a senior partner in the Barrett and Hale Engineers in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He was a member
of many Engineering Societies and was a member of all local Masonic bodies. Elmer and his wife, Ruth
were the parents of Richard and Robert. Elmer became a member of the SAR in 1934. His patriot
ancestor was John Tucker, who served as a private in the PA (possibly Chester County) Militia, under
Captains Moore and Junkin.

Walter Scott Barrett was born 19 Sept 1878 in Highland County, Ohio and died 11 Aug 1951 in
Highland County, Ohio. Walter initially became a member of the Columbus, Ohio Benjamin Franklin
Chapter in 1929 and then transferred his membership to the Chillicothe Chapter. Walter is a descendant
of James Mott who served in the Monmouth County, New Jersey Militia. Walter and his wife Anna
Marguerite were the parents of Edward Walter, Francis Louise, Walter Scott Jr., David Lee, and
Virginia Ashely. For many years he owned the local Pontiac dealership in Chillicothe. Walter served in
the war with Spain from 25 Apr 1898 to 31 Mar 1899, when he was honorably discharged as a sergeant.

Edgewood Manor Nursing home in Greenfield, Ohio. Walter and his wife Ruth Joy lived in Chillicothe.
Walter was an Industrial Design Engineer and an attorney. He entered the US Army 26 Nov 1940,
received two Purple Hearts, and was honorably discharged with the rank of captain. After the war, he
resumed his law practice in Columbus. Walter’s patriot ancestor was James Mott, a Major in the second

Henry Jones Climer was born 23 Aug 1917, Londonderry, Ohio and died 22 May 2000 in Portsmouth,
Ohio. Henry and his wife Opal Sarah were schoolteachers and farmers and they were the parents of
Martha Ellen and James Henry. In WWII, Henry served in the United States Air Force and was a
sergeant in the 490th Bomb Squad, 341st Bomb Group stationed in India. He served from Nov 1941 to
July 1945. In 1998, Henry received the WW 2 SAR Veteran’s medal. Henry was a member of the
Londonderry United Methodist Church. He joined the SAR in 1985. He was founding Chairman of the
Revolutionary War Patriot Grave Registration Committee. His patriot ancestor was Henry Jones, a
private in the New Jersey Continental Line.

Charles C. Evans Jr. was born 20 Dec 1909 in Chillicothe, Ohio and died Jun 1968 in Chillicothe.
Charles and his wife Catherine were the parents of William Edwin and Robert Clark. Charles was the
owner of the Charles C Evans Insurance Agency and a partner with his son in the Evans Reality Agency.
He served as a Lt. J.G. in the US Navy in World War II. Charles joined the SAR in 1950 and his patriot

Lee Vearl Fox
Lee and his late wife, JoAnn (Woodmansee), were the parents of Sharon Ann, Pamela Jo and Monte
Lee. Rev. Fox and his wife, JoAnn, lived at 206 Lee Circle in Bristol Village, Waverly, Ohio before her
passing. Colonel Fox was a retired US Army chaplain and served in 3 conflicts: WWII, Korea, and
Vietnam. In 1998, he received the SAR Medal for War service, with all three service bars for the three
wars. Lee is descended from Christian Messner, a private in Captain Heft’s company, Lancaster
County, Pennsylvania Militia. Lee became a member of the SAR in 1997. He verified two additional
patriot ancestors. In 2009, after the passing of his wife—the family genealogist, Lee allowed his
membership with Arthur St. Clair to lapse. Lee re-married, but passed away December 29th, 2012.

Charles Albert Fromm, Jr. was born 12 Sep 1915 in Chillicothe, Ohio and died 11 Nov 1995 in
Columbus, Ohio. Albert and his wife Norma Florence (Merchant) were the parents of Mary Katherine
Boggs. Al operated a printing business in Chillicothe, was past President of the Ohio Printers
Association, and was a member of the St. Paul Episcopal Church. He served overseas in the US Army
Headquarters, 5th Armored Division. Al and his wife are interred in Grandview Cemetery. Albert’s
patriot ancestor was Ensign Charles Hays Sr. who served in the Rockbridge County Virginia Militia, and
he became a member of the SAR in 1950.

Ohio. Paul and his wife Wanna Mae were the parents of Fred Z., Myron F., Paul Wendell, Lee
Kathleen, Susanne and David Wendell. Paul was a farmer and became a member of the SAR in 1950.

Township, Ross County, Ohio. Wendell and his wife Martha Jean were the parents of Suzanne, David
Wendell and John Freshour. Wendell had served as Presidents of the Kingston Union School Board,
Ross County School Board and the Ross County Farmers’ Club. He was also a member of the Ross
County Farm Bureau, Ross-ways Council, Ross County Farmers Club and Hart-Parr Oliver Association.
He was a member of the Circleville Presbyterian Church. Wendell was a farmer and joined the SAR in

Howard Engler Harman, MD was born 14 Dec 1888 in Chillicothe, Ohio and died 11 Dec 1963 in
Chillicothe. Howard and his deceased first wife Grace were the parents of sons Graybill and Fredrick.
He was a graduate of the University of Maryland Medical School. In WWI, Howard served as a Major
in the Medical Corps and in WWII he also served in the Medical Corps and served as a Lt. Colonel. His
service totaled 32 years and 3 months. Howard’s patriot ancestor was Jonathin Roland, a member of the
Associators of Lancaster County Pennsylvania. Howard became a member of the SAR in 1921.

Charles Nelson Hoyt, MD was born 30 Jun 1916 in Chillicothe, Ohio and died 25 Jun 1993 in Hilton
Head, South Carolina. Charles and his wife, Marcia were the parents of Seth Evans, Marcia Crary,
Joseph Nelson, Julia L. and Charles Nelson Jr. Charles graduated from Columbia University College of
Physicians and Surgeons. He served as Lt. in the US Navy in WWII. He was on the USS LST 286
during the Normandy invasion and on the USS DD560 for the invasion of Okinawa. He survived the
sinking of this ship. He served as a physician in Chillicothe for 17 years and then practiced at Riverside
Hospital in Columbus Ohio. Charles became a member of the SAR in 1950 and his patriot ancestor was
Joseph Hoyt who served as a Captain in the New Hampshire Line.

James Loy Kennard was born 12 Jul 1933 in Willard, Ohio and died 18 Jan 2004 in Chillicothe, Ohio.
James and his wife Vickie Lee were the parents of two sons, Aaron and Jeremy. Jim received an
associate degree from Ohio University in History and Journalism / Broadcasting. He retired after
serving 21 years as Administrator for the Ross County Commissioners and 6 years in the Ross County
Engineer’s Office. He was also a broadcaster for Telcom local TV and WBEX radio. Jim was a board
member of the Ross County Historical Society, a member of American Legion post 62, and the Phoenix
Fire Company. Jim, who served in the US Army, was a veteran of the Korean War. James became a
member of the SAR in 2002 and was descended from John Montgomery who served as a private in the
Washington County Virginia Militia.

Company at the Battle of Lexington in 1775.

Chester Eugene May was born 11 Feb 1928 at Cynthiana, Pike County, Ohio and died 17 Sep 1999 in
Waverly, Ohio. Chester was a long time schoolteacher who served in the US Army from Mar 1945 to 7
Oct 1951; first in the Transportation Corps, then in the Grave Registration and Military Police. He
received the SAR, Korean War Service Medal in 1998. Chester is a descendant of Captain Henry
Connelly who served in the North Carolina Militia. He also verified two other ancestral patriots.
Chester became a member of the SAR in 1976 and received the Minute Man Award after serving as
President of the Virginia Society.

They are the parents of Dennis, David, Duane and Norman. Elza was in the US Army, served two years
in Europe (Oct 1951 to Oct 1953) and is a member of the American Legion Post 4964 in Washington
CH, Ohio. He retired from the Hartley Oil Company in Washington CH, Ohio. Elza became a member
of the SAR in 1996 and is a descendant of Captain Henry Connelly, a member of a Horse Company,
North Carolina Militia. Elza passed away in 2012.

William McKinley III was born 17 Oct 1917 in Poughkeepsie, New York and died 2 Sep 2000 in
Chillicothe, Ohio. Bill and his wife Virginia were the parents of Allison Virginia and Lindsey
Plympton. A graduate of Saint Lawrence University, Bill was a Design Industrial Engineer and had
retired from AMF Inc. where he held several patents in the design of high-speed production and
packaging equipment. He served in the Navy in WWII aboard the ship USS Wyoming. Bill received
the SAR War Medal for his service in WW 2. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Ohio
and Ross County Historical Societies, and the Ross County Genealogical Society. In 1988, Bill became
a member of the Arthur St. Clair Chapter of the SAR, where he was one of the original three of the
Revolutionary War Graves Registration Committee. His patriot ancestor was Israel Vail who served as
a Captain in the Dutchess County Regiment in the New York Militia.

David Russell Medert
Prior to his passing in 2013, David and his wife Patricia Christina lived at 16 Shawnee Drive,
Chillicothe, Ohio. They were the parents of David V. and Melissa A.. David served in the Army in the
82nd Airborne Division and was honorably discharged in June 1948. Dave received the SAR Veteran’s
Service Medal from the Chapter. He earned an associate degree from Ohio University and had attended
Kent State University. David was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, the Ohio Gun
Collectors Association, Sons of Union Veterans, All Masonic Bodies, American Legion Post 62, and the
Sill Civil War Roundtable. Dave served as past national Commander-in-Chief SUVCW and President
of the Roundtable. David was been widely recognized for his efforts at both restoring and erecting
monuments in Chillicothe to the various War efforts. His latest effort in 2004 was the organizing,
planning, design, erection and dedication of suitable monuments for Ross County WW II participants.
He was a member of the Ohio Highway Patrol and retired with the rank of Lieutenant. He also was the

David Harold Painter was born 25 Feb 1910 in Xenia, Ohio and died 4 Apr 1992 in Chillicothe, Ohio.
Harold married Minnie Marie and they lived in Chillicothe where he was with the Ohio Department of
Human Services. He had previously been with the H. J. Heinz Co.. Harold served with the 101st
Airborne Division in WWII. He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church and various Masonic
bodies. His patriot ancestor was John St. John, a militiaman in the West Chester County, New York
Militia. He became an SAR member about 1989.

Claudius Elmer Pavey was born 21 Dec 1881 near Leesburg in Highland County, Ohio but his death is
not recorded there. He was the son of F.T. and Etta Pavey according to the Fairfield Township,
Highland County, OH 1900 Census. Investigation by Compatriot Dr. Michael Geron found that Pavey
died at home on 6 Nov 1959 (certificate #78954), and that an autopsy was performed. The death record
stated that Claude had been married, but that was not verified on his SAR Application for membership;
Claude was stated on that application to have been a retired farmer who never married. He became a
member of the SAR and his patriot ancestor was Ashley Johnson who was a 16-year-old guard over the
storehouses at the Norfolk Virginia Armory. Claudius became a member of the SAR in 1951.

James Hollis Petro was born 22 Oct 1915 in Columbus, Ohio and died 8 May 1993 in Chillicothe,
Ohio. James and his wife Kay were the parents of two daughters, Jennie and Lynn. Jim was a retired
Agronomist who joined the SAR in 1988. His patriot ancestor was John Coppage, a private in the Third
Virginia Regiment. He also verified 2 other patriot ancestors. Jim joined the SAR in 1988. James was
also a member of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, the Walnut Street United Methodist
Church and the Kiwanis Club.

William Stanley Reitz Jr. was born 4 Oct 1928 in Lewisburg, PA and died 6 Aug 1996 in Cape Cod,
Massachusetts. William and his wife Barbara were the parents of William III and David. William had
served as a Lieutenant in the Air Force and was stationed in Germany in 1953. He was a member of the
Presbyterian Church and had served as President of Chillicothe City Council. His career was with the J.
C. Penney Co. and he was the local store manager for several years. William became a member of the
Pennsylvania Society of the SAR in 1947, while a student in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. His patriot
ancestor was private Martin Raker who served in the Philadelphia County Pennsylvania Militia, under
Captain Dull.

Darrell Howard Rhinehart Darrell Howard Rhinehart left this life on 21st of September, 2006, and is
interred at Grandview Cemetery in Chillicothe. He and his wife Joyce lived at 8 Leeds Road in
Chillicothe, Ohio, prior to his death. They were the parents of Randall H., Dr. Stephen Nels and
Gretchen. Darrell graduated from Chillicothe High School and retired after having worked as a
technician in the Technical Service Department and as an Environmental Specialist at Mead Papers. He
was a member of Mead Retirees and Orchard Hill Church. Prior to disability and retirement, Darrell
was an avid hunter, fisherman and gun collector, as well as an accomplished photographer. Darrell
became a member of the SAR in 1998 and was descended from patriot Simon Rinehart, a private in
Captain Graybill’s Company, Maryland German Regiment.

William E. Ringwald III was born 26 April 1921 in Chillicothe, Ohio and died 9 Aug 1993 in
Waterloo, New York. William and his wife Phyllis were the parents of William E. 4th, Rand Evan,
Ellen, and Gail Beth. William was a graduate of Bucknell University and was a contractor when he
lived in Chillicothe. He was a member of the Chillicothe School Board for 8 years and was President of
the Ohio Contractors Association in 1961. William became a member of the SAR in 1951 and his
patriot ancestor was Charles Hays, an Ensign in the Rockbridge County Virginia Militia.

Floyd Isaac Rittenour was born 9 Feb 1877 in Green Twp., Ross County, Ohio and died 21 Jul 1958,
in Columbus, Ohio (at age 81 and a resident of Ross County). Floyd and his wife Marietta were the
parents of Ruth Jeanette, Robert Gould, and Eleanor Jane. He served two terms in the Ohio Legislature,
and was an active Mason. Floyd was a farmer who became a member of the SAR in 1950. His patriot
ancestor was Henry Jones, a private in the New Jersey Continental Line. Floyd had the distinction of
being the earliest born member of the Chillicothe / Arthur St. Clair Chapter of the OHSSAR.

M. Dow Scholl, MD was born 31 Aug 1899 in Bremen, Fairfield County, Ohio and died July 1982 in
Chillicothe. Dr Scholl and his wife Geraldine were the parents of Barbara Ann and Neil Dorsey. Dr.
Scholl served in the Army in World War I and then was a physician in Chillicothe. Dow became a
member of the SAR in 1953 and his patriot ancestor was James Palmer, a private in the King William
County Virginia Militia.

Charles Fulton Smith was born 15 Sept 1896 in Nelsonville, Athens County, Ohio, died 13 Jun 1978,
and is buried in Chillicothe’s Grandview Cemetery. Charles and his wife Elizabeth were the parents of
Betty and Charles Fulton Jr. Charles served in the US Army-108th Ordinance Group. Charles became a
member of the SAR in 1950 and his patriot ancestor was Stephen Smith, a Captain in the 8th Regiment,
14th Company, Rhode Island Militia.

Herbert Arvin Smith was born 23 Apr 1914 in Chillicothe, Ohio and died 24 Feb 2001 in Chillicothe,
Ohio. Herb and his wife Virginia were the parents of Kathryn Elaine, William Andrew, James Milton,
and John Herbert. Herb was the Technical Director of the Mead Paper Mill. For many years Herb
served the Board and was President of the Mead Employees Credit Union. He was a member of the
Walnut Street United Methodist Church and was active in numerous civic affairs. Herb became an SAR
member in 1988 and was the Charter Secretary/Treasurer of the Chapter, serving in that capacity from
1988 through 1996. His patriot ancestor was Jasper Partridge II, a private in Capt. James Blakeslee’s
Company, Vermont Regiment.

Charles Howard Steinhauser was born 9 Sept 1926 in Ross County, Ohio, passed away Feb 14, 2005
in Circleville, and is interred at the Jackson Township Cemetery, on Route 104 in Pickaway County,
OH. He and his wife Vera Jane (Rhoades) lived at 20109 Fox Road, Circleville, Ohio. They were the
parents of Suzanne, Charles Brian, Karen, and Elaine. Charles served as a Corporal in the US Marine
Corps from October 1944 to the end of December 1946 when he received an honorable discharge. In
1998, he received the SAR, WW 2 Veteran’s War Medal from the Chapter. He was a former Postmaster
of Clarksburg, past Jackson Township Trustee, founding member of the Clarksburg Volunteer Fire
department, and served on the Pickaway-Ross Joint Vocational School Board for over 20 years. He was
a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and formerly on the Church Council; a life member of the Marine
Corps League, American Legion Post 134, life member of AMVETS Post 2256, Soldiers Monument
Association, B.P.O.E. #77, and over 50-year member of the Heber Lodge #501, F & A Masons. Charles
joined the SAR in 1989 and his patriot ancestor was private Henry Fisher Sr. who served in Captain
Daniel Deturck’s Company, Berks County, Pennsylvania.

Francis G. Story was born 9 Sept 1905 in Chillicothe, Ohio and died in Jan 1987 in Chillicothe, Ohio.
Francis and his wife Alice Ona were the parents of Jacquelyn Anne and Harriet Jane. Francis was a
store manager in Chillicothe. His patriot ancestor was Adam Rickabaugh, a private in the Virginia
Troops, and he became a member of the SAR in 1950.

James Robert Tootle, Jr. passed away on 30 January 2008, and is interred at Springbank Cemetery, on
Route 104 north of Chillicothe. He and his wife Eleanor Louise had a farm on State Rt. 159 north of
Chillicothe. Jim was a member of the Adelphi Band, having begun playing with them in his youth.
Jim’s last days were no longer active in farming and he and his wife resided in Bristol Village in
Waverly, Ohio. He became a member of the SAR in 1988 and was a descendant of John Jacob Lutz
who served as a private in Wendell Weaver’s Company, Lancaster County Pennsylvania Militia.

Charles Emerson Turvy died 03 February 2008 and a decision was yet to be made (October 2008)
regarding the placement of a memorial stone. He and his first wife Cynthia Marie were the parents of a
son, Barry Emerson. Charles and his fourth wife Debbie lived at 6 Briarcliff Drive, Chillicothe, Ohio.
He served in the US Army from Apr 1966 to Dec 1968. He was a sergeant in the 25th Infantry Division
and served in Vietnam. In 1998, he received the Vietnam, SAR War Service Medal. Charles was a
member of the Walnut Street United Methodist Church, the American Legion, the VFW, the AMVETS
and the DAV. He was considered 100% disabled from the military, by the Veterans Administration.
Charles joined the SAR in 1988 and his patriot ancestor was John Peden who furnished supplies and
provisions for Army use.

Thomas Allen Ware was born 14 Feb 1891 in New Holland, Ohio and died Aug 1964 in Chillicothe,
Ohio. Thomas and his wife Phyllis were the parents of Beatrice, Nancy, Thomas and Charles M..
Thomas was a veteran of WWI and was wounded at the Second Battle of Marne in France. He was a
member of the First Presbyterian Church, local Masonic bodies and various veterans’ organizations.
Thomas was a mortician in the family firm in Chillicothe. He joined the SAR in 1950 and his patriot
ancestor was White Brown, a Lieutenant in a company of volunteers in the Delaware Militia.
