Intended Program Outcomes
Graduates will:
 Understand historical chronology from the origin of mankind to the
present.
 Recognize key elements in understanding history (e.g., cultural
achievements, major figures, historical contexts, geo-political
boundaries, and social and political developments).
Graduates will:
 Sort historical evidence topically and chronologically.
 Understand cause and effect relationships in history.
 Critically evaluate and analyze historical data.
 Identify the influence of history on different people, places, and
things.
 Interpret various historical events which demonstrate and explain
change over time.
 Recognize and explain historical trends (i.e., historiography).

WOH 1022, etc).
85% of graduating seniors will complete original research
projects and will earn 70% or higher on the project

and will earn 70% or higher on the review assignment
graded by History Department faculty (AFH 4100, AFH
4200, AMH 3571, AMH 3572, AMH 4573, HIS 3150).

80% of History Department faculty teaching 3000 and
4000 level courses will submit samples of student book
critiques and research papers demonstrating that
students have mastered content area material.

scoring 70% or higher on written exams which will be
assigned and graded by History Department faculty.
85% of graduating seniors in history will write a 3,750 –
5,000 word original historical essay and present their
research paper to the class (HIS 3150, HIS 1921, AFA
4936). They will score at least 70% on the paper graded
by History Department faculty.
85% of graduating seniors will discuss relevant
historiography with History Department faculty in history
classes like AFH 4100, AFH 4200, AMH 3571, AMH
3572, AMH 4573, etc).

85% of graduating seniors will critique historical articles
retrieved from electronic databases like J-Stor (AFH
4100, AMH 4573).
80% of History Department faculty will respond to the
following department survey item: Describe the quality of
most graduates’ oral and written communication skills

discussions to analyze various historical issues (AFH

All of the program outcomes will be assessed by an exit
survey given to 100% of the graduating seniors in the
department.
