Beat the Summer Heat by Soaking Up These Cooling Tips from CertainTeed
Avoid the spike in energy bills as summer settles in
Summer Solstice – the longest day of the year – greets homeowners on Sunday, June 21. While
many may embrace the warm weather, the electricity bill that comes with keeping a home cool is
often not as welcome. To protect your wallet and maximize summer fun, CertainTeed, a leading
provider of innovative and sustainable building products, offers the following tips to help you
cool off and save money:
Summer solace – Investing in a solar roof can give your home a sustainable advantage when it
comes to energy bills. A roofing system like Apollo II® can generate most or all of the electricity
a home uses during the day. Plus, excess power generated by the system flows back through the
meter and into the energy grid, which can mean a reduction, or even a credit, on your electric
bill.
Cool off –Turn off the air conditioner when it’s not needed, and never cool an empty or unused
room. Instead, rely on fans, which consume far less energy. A well-placed fan will create a
comfortable indoor breeze. If you’re in the market for an air conditioner, consider an ENERGY
STAR®-rated model, which can save you 10 percent or more in cooling costs when compared to
a conventional unit.
Insulate coolness – Did you know insulation not only helps a home keep warm, it can actually
keep it cool, too? Installing adequate insulation in your home and attic, such as SMARTBATT™
with MoistureSense™ Technology, can make your home more comfortable. Sufficient insulation
or even siding, like CedarBoards™ Insulated Siding with custom-contoured foam backing and
CertaWrap™ Weather Resistant Barrier can reduce energy bills and improve energy efficiency.

Grill out – Cooking appliances such as ovens give off excess heat that can actually increase the
temperatures in your home. And in the summer, that’s the opposite thing you want to do. Instead,
take advantage of the pleasant weather and cook outside. Grilling in the backyard will not only
keep unwanted heat out of the home, it creates a great opportunity for family fun.
Kill the lights – It’s always a good idea to eliminate additional heat sources in your home.
Incandescent light bulbs use a lot of power and only a fraction is actually used for light; the rest
is wasted. To avoid additional heat, switch to compact fluorescent or LED bulbs for efficiency.
