Couple Therapy for Depression
Accredited Practitioner Training
April 15th & 16th 2013
April 22nd 2013
April 29th & 30th 2013
VENUE: LEEDS
About the Training:
This is an approximately 9 month CPD course made up of 5 days formal teaching (on the above
dates) and nine months supervision which enables experienced couple practitioners (or
equivalent) to practice the Couple Therapy approved as a treatment for mild to moderate
depression in IAPT Services. Successful completion of the course and supervised clinical work
allows accreditation as a ‘Couple Therapy for Depression IAPT Practitioner’.
The training has been commissioned by NHS North of England for the Yorkshire and the Humber
region and will be provided by The Tavistock Centre for Couple Relationships at the Northern
School of Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy (NSCAP) in Leeds.
About the Training Provider:
The Tavistock Centre for Couple Relationships developed Couple Therapy for Depression for use
in IAPT Services, having been commissioned by the Department of Health to create a
competencies framework for this treatment with Relate. TCCR subsequently produced the
Training Course that leads to accreditation as a Couple Therapy for Depression IAPT Practitioner,
and has delivered it in London, Manchester and Bristol. TCCR is currently the only fully accredited
training provider for Couple Therapy for Depression.
The Northern School of Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy was set up by the NHS in 2003 and
is now one of the largest psychotherapy training schools in the UK. NSCAP delivers training,
consultancy and research for professionals and services working with children, adolescents and
families including adults with mental health difficulties. NSCAP is co-ordinating the local provision
of IAPT Couple Therapy for Depression training.

What is Couple Therapy for Depression?
Based on NICE guidelines, Couple Therapy for Depression is a brief (20 session) integrative
treatment for depression for couples where one of the partners is experiencing both relationship
distress and depression. It has been developed by identifying best practice in a range of
behavioural and other types of couple therapies evidenced in RCT effectiveness trials. Taken
together these represent good clinical practice in the treatment of depression. Couple Therapy for
Depression focuses on the relational aspects of depression and on factors that reduce stress and
increase support within the couple.
Who is eligible for the Training?
The course is for practitioners who already have an initial qualification in Couple Therapy or
equivalent experience of treating couple relationships, together with two years’ experience of
working with couples with common mental health difficulties. This training is not for
practitioners without a Couple Therapy qualification or equivalent experience.
Each application must include:
 a completed application form (below)
 a statement of support from a current supervisor (below)
 a statement of support from your line manager (below)
What are the supervision requirements?
Trainees will be expected to participate in weekly supervision sessions between May 2013 and
January 2014. This will be facilitated by the training team and training consultants. Supervision
will be conducted in groups and may require telephone or video conferencing. Trainees will be
required to submit digital recordings of therapy sessions as well as verbal reports.
What accreditation will successful trainees receive?
When the criteria are met, the trainee will receive:
 Certificate of Satisfactory Attendance after course attendance and evaluation
 Certificate of Completion of Practitioner Training as a Couple Therapy for Depression IAPT
Practitioner after supervision and assessment of two cases, enabling them to become
accredited with the British Society of Couple Psychotherapists and Counsellors – the Lead
Accrediting Body for this modality.
Closing Date:
31st January 2013
How will the application be assessed?
All applications will be screened by staff at NSCAP to ensure that the entry requirements of
qualification, experience and setting have been met. Those that do not meet the criteria cannot be
accepted. Prospective applicants who are unsure if they meet the criteria should contact Amy
Deakes (details below). Places will initially be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Early
application is encouraged.
When will applicants hear if they have a place?
Applications for the course will be reviewed by the 8th February and all applicants will be notified as
soon as possible after this date.
