Subject: Request for Nominations for Outstanding Technical Excellence
in Southern New Jersey for year 2015
What finer way is there to express your appreciation to a valued employee then nominating the
individual for an Award recognizing his or her Professional Achievements? The Southern New
Jersey Professional Societies are requesting nominations of individuals having outstanding
contributions in engineering and science for its annual ‘Engineer of the Year’ awards Banquet.
Selected Nominees will be invited to the Annual Awards banquet held on November 19th. The
awards are open to individuals making significant contributions to the fields of science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics in southern New Jersey. The surrounding area and the technical
communities at the William J. Hughes Technical Center and the Transportation Security Laboratory
are all strongly encouraged to recommend peers or managers for the top technical awards. The
award categories are:
Outstanding Engineer or Outstanding Scientist (one award)
Outstanding Aviation Research
Outstanding Technical Leadership
Outstanding Contributions to Testing or ATC (one award)
Outstanding Young Professional
Accomplishments prior to May 2014 are ineligible. Prior winners are evaluated on new
accomplishments only. Nominations are for individuals only (i.e., there are no team awards).
Nominations are evaluated in the following four areas:
1. Leadership skills
-Demonstrated extraordinary technical leadership.
2. Technical Excellence
-Demonstrated superior technical expertise.
3. Specific Superior Accomplishments.
- Excellence / success achieved / task difficulty
4. Service to the Profession
- Participation in Professional and/or Community organizations

Award Categories for November Awards Banquet
Complete and submit the nomination form that is most applicable to the candidate. Nominations may not
be more than 2 pages in length. (fill in the white blocks on the forms with the candidates information,
examples are provided)
Outstanding Engineer or Outstanding Scientist - Nomination Form 1
This premier award recognizes an individual for outstanding contributions to engineering and science.
Candidates will be assessed based upon their technical leadership, involvement in professional activities,
scope/quality of achievement(s) that support the nominee’s profession.
Outstanding Technical Leadership – Nomination Form 2
This award recognizes technical leadership. Technical Leadership is the demonstrated ability to use technical
knowledge while influencing people to work toward the completion of a goal. Goal must have some element of
importance to the FAA, or company. Individual will likely have demonstrated elements of management
(planning, organizing, directing, controlling, coordinating or staffing). This person can be identified as having
the writing and speaking skills to motivate congress, managers, subordinates to a particular goal. Examples
may include convincing stakeholders, management, potential benefactors, or customers that a proposed or
ongoing effort is worthy of support.
Outstanding Contributions to Testing or ATC – Nomination Form 3
This award category recognizes outstanding a) test and evaluation efforts, or b) contributions to Air Traffic
Control. TEST. An outstanding test and evaluation effort may include developmental of test documentation,
test conduct to the completion of test reporting. Testing can be in the integration, subsystem, system level
testing, factor, or field. Testing can include accomplishments in Modeling & Simulation. Operational T&E may
include field-testing, testing with subject matter experts. ATC. Outstanding ATC effort includes engineering
and scientific achievements in Air Traffic Control or its supporting systems (communications, navigation,
surveillance (CNS), weather, Human factors, maintenance). The accomplishment may relate to any aspect of
system acquisition, or NAS operations. Examples include research, system development, system
implementation, avionics systems, lifecycle maintenance, and operation. The primary evaluation criteria will be
the quality of the technical achievement and the impact on the safety and/or efficiency of Air Traffic Control
and/or NAS operations, and or development of consumer products.
Outstanding Aviation Research – Nomination Form 4
This award recognizes outstanding achievements in the area of basic or applied research. The aviation
research can relate to engineering (e.g., electrical, mechanical, civil, aerospace, computer, software,
aeronautics, astronautics, information technology, or security).
Outstanding Young Professional – Nomination Form 5
This award recognizes outstanding achievements in the area of engineering or research for an individual 35
years old or under on 1 January 2015.
Nominees must reside or work in southern New Jersey
Information will be handled confidentially and all forms will be destroyed after the Awards ceremony.
