The Way Home is a parent newsletter from the Archdiocese of Baltimore Division of Youth and Young Adult Ministry and St. Stephen Youth & Young Adult Ministry. It is designed to give you things to discuss with your young people on The Way Home as well as to help prepare them for their faith journey on The Way Home to Christ. GETTING YOUNG PEOPLE INVOLVED As young people are transitioning into a new school year, they might also be transitioning into youth ministry programs and/or, school activities including the arts or sports. You, as parents, are essential in helping young people negotiate these new relationships. The Center for Youth Ministry Training has some suggestions to help with this transition. While aimed towards youth ministry, you can certainly make applications to other activities as well. http://www.cymt.org/tips-for-parents-helpingyour-child-transition-into-the-youth-ministry/ LIFE IN THE FAMILY TALKING ABOUT EXCELLENCE Have you invited your young person to excellence? Habits that are formed in your young person’s adolescence will carry through into their future. You might consider inviting them to read this article and discussing how you might assist them in fulfilling the challenge extended. Ultimately, it tells of how heroic and historic choices can be very quiet and very subtle. http://sojo.net/blogs/2013/08/14/butler-and-hisdc-church-%E2%80%94-man-steady-faith A Catholic News review indicates that despite the language and violence portrayed, “the moral significance of this uplifting journey -- undertaken within a context of implicit religious faith and strong marital commitment -- is such that at least some parents may consider it acceptable for older teens.” For reviews of movies before your young people head out to see them, please check http://www.catholicnews.com/movies.htm MUSIC One of the songs of this summer as well as one of the controversial moments in music this summer comes from Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines. On the Video Music Awards from MTV, former Disney teen star Miles Cyrus performed a graphic dance with the much older (married) Thicke to this song. The lyrics can be found here: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/r/robin_thicke /blurred_lines.html and may certainly provide an excellent opportunity to discuss how lines get blurred morally as they also become crossed physically. http://lifeteen.com/blurry/ Songs always offer an opportunity to discuss the relationships that are the subject of the music What is working right? What seems unhealthy? Most often, you can do a quick search by typing in the artist and/or song title along with the word “lyrics” in your search engine. TECHNOLOGY A youth minister, who usually is very supportive of young people engaging in new technology, gives a thorough and thoughtful explanation as to why he has “never seen a more dangerous application targeting teenagers, specifically girls, than SnapChat. He suggests that picture should be shared over text message or Instagram. (Instagram, part of Facebook, has a much better privacy policy, terms of service, and is not built on the lie of privacy… like Snap Chat.) http://adammclane.com/2013/08/22/why-youshould-delete-snapchat/ Upcoming Events: 9/7 – GSP Rosary Guild 9/8 – New High School Peer Minister Retreat 9/11 – Forms Due for Dance: Code of Conduct & Permission Form 9/11 – Jr High Peer Ministers meet 9/13 – Regional Dance 9/14 – Car Wash for Life 9/17 – Faith Formation Open House grades 7-12 9/20 – Friday Night Light for youth in grades 7 & 8 9/23 – Worthy of the Call volunteer training for youth ages 14-17 9/24 – Faith Formation Kick Off grades 7-12 9/25 Respect Life Ministry meets 3:30 Volunteer Training MANDATORY For Youth age 14-17 Who wish to volunteer on behalf of St. Stephen Monday, September 23 7:30—9pm at St. Francis de Sales, Rm 203 Tuesday, September 24 7:30—9pm at St. Francis de Sales, Rm 203 Wednesday, September 25 7:30-9pm at St. Francis de Sales , Rm 203 7:30-9pm at St. Ignatius Church This newsletter is a service of St. Stephen Youth & Young Adult Ministry and the Archdiocese of Baltimore Division of Youth and Young Adult Ministry We serve those who serve the “youngchurch!” St. Stephen, Bradshaw Department of Evangelization Mrs. Kellie Reynolds Division of Youth and Young Adult Ministry Coordinator of Youth & Young Adult Ministry Archdiocese of Baltimore 320 Cathedral Street Baltimore, MD 21201 kreynolds@archbalt.org (best) 410-547-5372 410-625-8481 fax 410-592-7294 E-mail Web Site YA Facebook Page
