The Roman Imperium
Summer 2012
Hist 346g
Bill Cumiford (cumiford@chapman.edu)
The Roman Empire, extending from its origins in central Italy, spread throughout Europe
to dominate western civilization for nearly half a millennium. Rome drew its inspiration
from the ancient heart of the city of Rome and later extended the imperial presence to the
outer reaches of Gaul, Germany, and Britain. That presence is seen today in the ruins and
artifacts reflecting ancient Rome’s tremendous power and influence. Participants in this
course will visit the core of this great civilization in Italy and will later survey Roman
sites in Britain. In Italy we will be conducting excursions to the Colosseum, the Roman
Forum and the Palatine Hill, the Appian Way and the Catacombs, Pompeii and Florence.
In Britain participants will visit the Roman excavations and museums at Bath and ancient
Roman settlements and sites in London, York, Colchester and St. Albans.
