Lesson Plan
OBJECTIVE
What will your students be able to do?
SWBAT identify conjunctions in a
sentence; create compound sentences by
using conjunctions.
PREPLANNING:
KNOW, SO,
SHOW
CONNECTION TO THE BIG GOAL.
How does the objective connect to the big
goal?
In order for my students to reach their big
goal of mastering 80% of the objectives
and scoring a 3 or 4 on the state writing
assessment, they need to be able to use
conjunctions to write compound
sentences.
ASSESSMENT.
How will you know whether your students have made progress toward the objective?
How and when will you assess mastery?
Students will create compound sentences and identify the conjunction in the
sentences for independent practice. Then, students will create compound sentences in
their own writing.
KEY POINTS
What key points will you emphasize?
1. Conjunctions connect words, phrases, clauses or sentences together
2. When you connect two sentences together with a conjunction, you get a
compound sentence.
3. Common conjunctions include: “and,” “or,” “but,” “so,” and “yet.”.

communicate connections to
previous lessons?
How will you engage students and
capture their interest?
I will tell students that we are talking
about joining two sentences together
today. I will ask one student whether she
likes pizza or pasta. I will use the student
response to demonstrate how conjunctions
work.
INTRODUCTION OF NEW
MATERIAL (_8_ min.).

How will you introduce the
targeted material?


How will you ensure that students
actively take-in information?
Which potential misunderstandings
will you anticipate?
1. Compound sentences are when you
have two sentences in one. You
connect two sentences together
using a conjunction.
2. Go back to student sample
sentence and show how you can
split it to create two separate
sentences. Connect to persuasive
letters; add compound sentences to Conjunction Junction lyrics poster.
our list of elements that persuasive
letters have.
3. Teach students Conjunction
Junction song, and tell them how
the song shows us what
conjunctions are and how they
work.

How will you clearly state and

How will you structure the guided
practice?
How will all students have multiple
opportunities to practice?
How will you scaffold practice
exercises from easy to hard?
How will you monitor and correct
student performance?
Demonstrate for students how to use
conjunctions to create compound
sentences:
1. Paired sentence strips with short
sentences (e.g. “I like to go to the
movies.” “I like to play video
games.”)
2. Conjunction joiner sentence strips
(and, but, or, so, yet)
3. Model for students thought process
for choosing the right conjunction.
4. Tape sentences together and
correct the punctuation as well
(which students have already
mastered last week).


How will students summarize what
they learned?
