She is respectful and kind. She answers any questions that I might have. His (Grant) initial evaluation there was VERY VERY thorough. Much more so than anywhere else that we have been. The nurse asked TONS of developmental/sensory questions (he was around 18 months when we switched due to our other pediatrician retiring). The staff is also wonderful in the office. My kids can sometimes be apprehensive about having their teeth just brushed, and they are wonderful for him. There are TV screens on the ceiling over the chairs to distract the kids, which is a blessing in disguise. They will also skip all fluoride treatments if that is your preference.” http://www.olentangypediatricdentistry.com/ Delaware Pediatric Dentistry Sachin S. Parulkar, DDS, LLC 3769 Columbus Pike Suite 100 Delaware, Ohio 43015 740-201-1215 www.delawarekidsdentist.com Sachin S. Parulkar, D.D.S., Delaware Pediatric Dentistry Background info: Dr. Sachin S. Parulkar grew up in East Liverpool, Ohio. He graduated from Miami University in 1995 with a Bachelor of Arts in Zoology. In 2002, he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. He went on to complete a two-year residency program in general dentistry at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C. in 2004 where he received a special certification in intravenous conscious sedation. Dr. Sachin received his Pediatric specialty training from Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit, Michigan where he served as Chief Resident. During his pediatric training, he focused not only on the dental treatment of children, but also on special needs patients of all ages. He is a board certified Pediatric Dentist and is a member of the American Dental Association, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the Ohio Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the Ohio Dental Association, and the Columbus Dental Society. He has hospital privileges at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and holds a conscious sedation permit from the State of Ohio. 1. Why did you decide to become a pediatric dentist? During my general practice dental residency at Wake Forest University, and upon the birth of my first child, I came to the realization that I really enjoyed working with kids on their dental care. I found that I had a way to “connect” to children to make them feel at ease. I feel that each child is unique and therefore the treatment of that child, as well as the dental experience that child has at our office, should be tailored to that child’s unique needs. 2. What do you have to offer for special needs children? Before we even approach the child, and even before assessing the child’s dental health, we obtain a thorough medical history from the parent to understand each child. When we find out that a child has special needs, we will try to find out specifically from the parent what special needs the child has. For example, if we find out a child has a sensitivity to light, we will dim the exam light, give the child sunglasses and make every effort to keep minimal light on the child’s face. If a child has a sound sensitivity and the dental equipment may affect the child, we will first provide him or her with headphones (if they can be tolerated) to minimize the sound. We also have a vast array of DVD videos in our office that he or she can watch right at the dental chair. Alternatively, the child can listen to music so that he or she will feel more comfortable. If the vibrations from the professional dental cleaning bother a child with either sound or tactile sensitivities, a regular handheld toothbrush can be used instead and will be just as effective for a cleaning. Often DVDs help for children who are apprehensive or cannot sit still in a chair for very long. If a child is more comfortable sitting with the parent, we can have the parent hold the child for what is called a “knee to knee exam”. This is where the dentist and parent sit facing each other with their knees touching. The legs of both people simulate an exam table. This way, the child can feel secure while seeing their parent’s familiar face and allows the dentist to complete the exam. In the event that a child may need dental treatment beyond a checkup or cleaning, nitrous oxide, oral sedation or general anesthesia can be used for those patients who may need it after assessing them. Children with autism, sensory processing disorder and other special needs can have a positive dental experience. It is our goal to make the child with special needs feel comfortable and secure in the dental chair.
