6th International Symposium
Global Mental Health Mental Health in Developing Countries
8th November 2014, Munich
Dear Colleagues,
The Center for International Health (CIH)LMU, the Global Mental Health GroupLMU from the
Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, and the International Network for Cooperation in
Mental Health (i.nez), are organizing the 6th International Symposium on “Global Mental Health –
Mental Health in Developing Countries”. We will present an overview of the importance of mental
health for developing countries. The symposium is open to all staff and students interested in this
topic.
More than half a billion people worldwide have a neuropsychiatric disorder or are dependent on
alcohol or drugs. More than 80% of these people live in a developing country and most of them do not
receive appropriate treatment. Many are stigmatized and experience prejudice, social exclusion and
frequent violations of their human rights. All of these factors can cause serious psychological,
physical, social and economic harm.
This symposium intends to give an overview of the importance of mental health for developing
countries with reports from Africa, Asia and Latin-America.
You are cordially invited to participate in the 6th International Symposium “Global Mental Health –
Mental Health in Developing Countries”.
