Mixture Separation Lab

PURPOSE
To separate a mixture into its pure substances using characteristic properties
RESEARCH:
Write out the definition of characteristic properties
Also, write down the list that was brainstormed in class on how to separate mixtures.
HYPOTHESIS – none required
Materials
1. Filter paper
2. Plastic cups
3. Powedered Milk
4. Iron Filings
5. Sawdust
6.. Pieces of Ribbon
7. Unlimited supply of water
8. Paper towel
9. Bowl holding supplies
10. Paper clips
11. Magnet
SAFETY RULES:
- Iron filings may not get wet!
- Magnets may not come out of bag!
EXPERIMENT
You’ll be figuring this out with your group. I’m not going to require you to write out the steps, but you
will have to answer questions about it in your conclusion.
Think about the CHARACTERISTIC PROPERTIES of your mixture items (sponge chunks, table salt,
and sawdust to create your method).
ANALYSIS

Write a few sentences in a paragraph form that answers
