PLACES TO VISIT IN MAZGAON/BYCULLA The area In the surrounding areas of Mazgaon various names prevail: South side is known as Wadibunder, Dongri or Noorbaug, J.J. Hospital, to east side Darukhana area which is especially known for it’s shoreline, to North side Reay Road, Ghodapdeo, and to West side Byculla again J.J. Hospital etc. Churches in Mazagaon/ Byculla. Mazagaon is famous for its churches. Among the more prominent are: St. Anne's Church (Roman Catholic) (next to St. Mary's School), Our Lady of the Rosary Church (Roman Catholic) in the East (opposite Dockyard Road Station), 5mins by cab. Our Lady of Glory Church (Roman Catholic) up north (in Byculla, opposite Byculla station) 15mins by cab. St. Joseph's Church (Roman Catholic) down south (in Umerkhadi, Dongri) 10mins by cab. Methodist Churches near Victoria Gardens. ( Near Byculla station East, 15mins by cab.) The original Gloria church, Nossa Senhora da Glória, was built in 1632 from a donation by the de Souza family. It was destroyed in 1911, being replaced two years later by a new Gothic church of the same name built a kilometer away. ( Santa satva marg, Near Heritage hotel, Byculla, 15mins by cab) Places to visit in and around Mazagaon • Jijamata Udyan (previously known as Ranicha Baug or Municipal Zoo or Victoria Gardens - which is one and only place in proper Mumbai.Jijamata Udyaan also houses the Mumbai Zoo. It houses many rare and endangered species of animals and birds. • The Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum (formerly the Victoria and Albert Museum) is the oldest museum in Mumbai and the third oldest in the country. It was originally established in 1855 as a treasure house of the decorative and industrial arts. The Museum’s collection includes the fine and decorative arts which showcases the importance of craftsmanship practiced by various communities of the Bombay Presidency. It also has an extraordinary collection of clay models and dioramas that document the life of the people of Mumbai and the history of the city in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Located in Jijamata Udyan compound. • Joseph Baptista Gardens (locally known as the Mazagaon Gardens, is a 1.5 acres (0.6 ha) park in south Mumbai in Mazagon. It lies atop a hill, the Bhandarwada Hill, and offers a panoramic view of the Mumbai harbour and the southern business district of the city. Beneath the gardens is a water reservoir, The gardens are located behind the Dockyard Road railway station, at an altitude of 32 meters (105 ft) 10 mins by cab. • Kwan Tai Shek Chinese temple (the only one in the city) Only a few minutes from Dock Yard Road railway station. Ask anyone where Kwan Tai Shek is and they’ll lead you right to it. It comes as a surprise, because it hardly looks like a temple from the outside. It is one house among a row of old houses, and only a bright red balcony is what makes it stand out. Kwan Tai Shek is a serenely beautiful temple, and a great place to simply sit and meditate in silence. It’s one of those places in Mumbai that is rarely spoken about, but is a gem you must pay a visit. Parking space is available.Anytime between – 10 AM – 6 PM • Bhaucha Dhakka or Ferry Wharf which previously was harbour and the Big and Medium size Boats use to leave for Konkan, Goa area. Now small boats, dingies, barges, ferries are operated and plying to Uran and its nearby area. Not only this but Ganapati-deity of Hindus are also immersed here. This is now especially known for its Wholesale Fish Market. The wharf is used by the students of the Training Ship Rahaman which is an institute for maritime studies on the island of Nhava.One can reach Alibaug by catamaran(sea) from "Bhaucha Dhakka" to Rewas and from Rewas to Alibaug by bus. 15mins by cab • Mankeshwar Mandir – A wellknown Century Old Hindu Temple is situated on Barrister Nath Pai Marg and near Darukhana Bus Stop.(10mins by cab). Museum In Fort Area The Prince of Wales Museum of Western India, later renamed as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya is the main museum in Mumbai.
