RHINARD RHOADS EXPIRES AT SALIX
One of Oldest Residents of Adams Township; Funeral on Saturday Morning
SALIX, July 1 - Rhinard Rhoads, aged 87 years, one of the oldest and best-known residents of Adams Township, died at 4 o'clock
yesterday afternoon at the residence of his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Margaret Rhoads, a widow, with whom he made his home for several
years. His death was due to diseases incident to old age.
Mr. Rhoads' wife died here nine years ago. The deceased is survived by the following children: Jacob Rhoads, of Salix; Rebecca,
wife of George W. Seese, of Dunlo; Elizabeth, wife of Louis Kring, of Altoona; George W. Rhoads, of the Seventeenth Ward,
Johnstown; W. W. Rhoads, of Dunlo, and O. J. Rhoads, of Salix.
Funeral services will be held at 9 o'clock Saturday morning from the United Evangelical Church and will be in charge of the Rev. J.
D. Hamer, the pastor. Interment will be made in the Salix Cemetery. The body has been prepared for burial by Undertaker J. W.
Fouch.

JACOB RHOADS, 74, CALLED BY DEATH
Well-Known Resident of Salix Succumbs to Apoplexy; Funeral Friday

SALIX, May 15 - Jacob Rhoads, aged 74 years, died of apoplexy at his residence here at 6:20 o'clock this morning. He suffered a
stroke last Friday.
The deceased was born at Dunlo on September 16, 1855. He was a son of Rhinard and Eva (Paul) Rhoads. His father was one of
the pioneer settlers of Cambria County.
Mr. Rhoads is survived by his widow, Mrs. Catherine (Kring) Rhoads and these children: Mrs. L. E. Helsel, of Elton; Mrs. Howard
Thomas, of Sidman; C. H. Rhoads, of Elton; Harry Rhoads, of Revloc; Ross Rhoads, of Holsopple; Mrs. George Smay, of Salix; and
Carl Rhoads, at home. He also leaves three brothers and two sisters, George W. Rhoads, of Johnstown; William Rhoads, of Sidman;
O. J. Rhoads, of Salix; Mrs. Lewis Kring, of Johnstown, and Mrs. George Seese, of Dunlo. Thirty grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren also survive.
Mr. Rhoads was a member of the Salix Evangelical Church. He had worked for 35 years in the employ of the Henrietta Coal
Company, retiring four years ago.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Friday afternoon in the local Evangelical Church, conducted by the Rev. J. L. Smith,
pastor, assisted by the Rev. J. T. Shaffer, of Salix. Burial will be held in the Salix Cemetery. Undertaker Howard Barefoot will have
charge of the funeral.

CATHERINE RHOADS SUCCUMBS AT SALIX
Septuagenarian Was Daughter of Jacob and Lydia (Gramling) Kring
Mrs. Catherine Rhoads, widow of Jacob Rhoads, died yesterday afternoon at her home in Salix after an illness of a complication of
ailments lasting three years. Mrs. Rhoads had been bedfast for about a year. She was a daughter of Jacob and Lydia (Gramling)
Kring and was born in Adams Township, this county, in May, 1857.
The deceased and Jacob Rhoads were married in the Evangelical Church at Salix in 1877 by the late Rev. Frank P. Saylor, a minister
of the Evangelical Church. Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Rhoads, five of whom passed away some time ago. They were
Eva Jane, Ruby, George, David and Harry Rhoads. Jacob Rhoads' death occurred in May, 1930. Mrs. Rhoads was a sister of Mrs.
Jennie Arthur, who died some years ago in Moxham; George Kring, who died in Salix about 1914, and David and Jacob Kring, who
passed away in Moxham, David two years ago and Jacob last fall.
Mrs. Rhoads is survived by six children, 32 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Lydia Shank of the Seventeenth
Ward. The sons and daughters are Mrs. L. E. Helsel and C. H. Rhoads, both of Elton; Mrs. Howard Thomas and Mrs. George Smay,
both of Sidman; Ross Rhoads of Krayn and Carl Rhoads, at home.
Mrs. Rhoads was affiliated with the Salix Evangelical Church for some 50 years. Funeral services will be held at the church at 2
o'clock Saturday afternoon by Rev. Clair Clark, her pastor, and Rev. Ray Starr of the First Evangelical Congregational Church, this
city, with interment in the church graveyard. Lloyd Shank is the mortician in charge of funeral arrangements.

Mrs. Rebecca Seese
SIDMAN - Mrs. Rebecca Ann (Rhodes) Seese, 81, widow of George W. Seese, died at noon yesterday at the home of her daughter,
Mrs. Harry Thomas of Sidman. Death followed an illness of several months. Mrs. Seese was born near Sidman on January 15, 1859.
Surviving are these children: F. P. Seese, O. D. Seese, Nora, wife of C. R. Thomas, Mrs. Eve Weyant, Mary, wife of R. D.
Hildebrand, Mrs. Amanda Hill and Grace, wife of Harry Thomas, all of Sidman; Harry Seese, Scalp Level, and Simon Seese, St.
Michael. Mrs. Seese was a sister of Orlando Rhodes, Salix, and Mrs. Elizabeth Kring, Krings Station.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon in the Sidman United Brethren Church by Rev. F. B. Hackett and
Rev. J. C. Moses. Interment will be in the Salix Cemetery under the direction of C. O. Diamond, South Fork mortician. The remains
will be removed to the church at 1 o'clock.

George W. Seese
George W. Seese, aged about 75 years, died at 5:15 o'clock last evening at his home in Dunlo of an attack of acute indigestion. He
is survived by his widow, Rebecca, and the following children: Frank of Braddoc; Rhinard of Beaverdale; Amanda and Orlando, of
Sidman; Eva, Nora, Mary, Grace, Harry and Simon, all at home. Two sisters, Mrs. Jacob Hocker, of Braddock, and Mrs. John
Hiechew, of Central City, also survive.
The funeral will take place Friday afternoon, with interment in the Salix Cemetery. Undertaker J. W. Fouch took charge of the
body.

Had Resided in Richland Twp., Near Arbutus Park, Many Years
Louis Richard Kring, aged 75, a retired farmer, died this morning at his home in Richland Township, near Arbutus Park, where he
had resided many years.
Mr. Kring was a son of Moses and Susan (Dunmide Kring), both deceased, and was born November 7, 1861. Surviving are his
widow, Mrs. Elizabeth (Rhoads) Kring, and these children: Morris of Johnstown, Alvin of Troy, Pa., Palmer of Sidman, Lawrence of
Markleysburg, Mrs. D. L. Allenbaugh and Mrs. J. D. Brumbaugh, both of Johnstown, and Mrs. C. B. Nearhoff of Cleveland, O.
He was a brother of John Kring of Oklahoma; I. N. Kring of Johnstown; Moses Kring of Salix, and Mrs. G. W. Rhoads of
Johnstown. Three brothers and a sister preceded him in death. Mr. Kring also leaves 23 grandchildren. The body has been prepared
for burial by Howard Barefoot, Salix mortician.

Funeral services for Lewis Kring, aged 75, a retired farmer who died yesterday morning at his home in Richland Township, near

GEORGE W. RHOADS EXPIRES IN MOXHAM
Deceased Had Not Enjoyed Good Health for Eight or Nine Months

George W. Rhoads, a pensioner of the Lorain Steel Company since last September, died last evening at his home, 800 Park avenue,
Moxham, aged 61 years. His health had been impaired for the last eight or nine months. Mr. Rhoads had been employed in the
Moxham plant for a long time but was compelled to relinquish his duties last fall on account of impaired health.
The deceased was a son of Reinhard and Eva Rhoads and was born in Adams Township, this county, on April 11, 1868. He and
Miss Jennie Kring were married at the Moses Kring home in Salix, February 16, 1893, by the Rev. H. A. Buffington, of the United
Brethren Church, who is now the pastor of the Madison charge.
Surviving are his widow, Jennie (Kring) Rhoads; a son, Clarence O., of 830 Cypress avenue, and a daughter, LaVerne, wife of
George Vallance, of 805 Cypress avenue, together with two grandchildren, Harry and Clarence Donald Rhoads. He also is survived
by these brothers and sisters: Rebecca Anna Seese, widow of George Seese, of Lovett; Elizabeth, wife of Louis Kring, of Richland
Township; William, of Toledo, O., and Orlando, of Salix.
Mr. Rhoads was an active worker in the Park-avenue U. B. Church and Sunday School. He was one of the organizers of the
Moxham congregation and was formerly identified with the All-Aboard Sunday School Class. For the last few years he had been the
teacher of the Scout Class in the Sunday School.
Funeral services will be held at the Rhoads home at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon by the Rev. Dr. C. W. Winey, pastor of the Parkavenue United Brethren Church, with interment in Grandview Cemetery. Friends are requested to omit flowers.

John M. Rhodes Believed to Have Been Accidentally Killed; Searching Party
Finds Body
SOUTH FORK, June 18 - John M. Rhodes, aged 66 years, who resided at
Rhodes Crossing, which is situated on the South Fork - Windber Branch of
the Pennsylvania Railroad, was killed some time yesterday while out in
the woods near his home hunting for crows. It is believed that Mr.
Rhodes fell and his shotgun was accidentally discharged, the entire top
of his head being shot away. When Mr. Rhodes failed to return home for
supper last evening his family became alarmed and a searching party was
formed and the lifeless body was found about a half mile from the Rhodes
home. He is survived by his widow and several children.

Mrs. L. E. Helsel Of Elton Dies
ELTON – Mrs. Lydia (Rhoades) Helsel, 66, wife of L. E. Helsel, prominent farmer of this section, died at 6 o’clock this morning at
her home after an extended illness, a daughter of Jacob and Catherine (Kring) Rhoades, she was born in Adams Twp. On July 24,
1878.
In addition to her husband she leaves these children: Otis, Sidman; June and Guy, both at home. A son, Grear, is dead. Mrs. Helsel
was a sister of Herbert Rhoades, Elton; Nora, wife of H. A. Thomas, Sidman; Ross, Dunlo; Velma, wife of George Smay, Sidman, and
Carl, Salix. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o’clock Friday afternoon at the Helsel home by Rev. J. Domer Hammer, pastor of the Roxbury
Evangelical Church, Johnstown. Interment will be in Dunmire Cemetery under the direction of Lloyd Shank, Scalp Level mortician.

Pneumonia Fatal to Well Known Resident; Funeral Wednesday at Salix
EBENSBURG, Feb. 16 - Harry Rhodes, aged 41, died this morning at his home at 209 East Ogle street, following a brief illness of
bronchial pneumonia. He is survived by is widow and five children, Donald, Robert, Weldon, Jeanne and Shirley, all at home. He
also leaves his mother, Mrs. Catherine Rhodes of Salix, and these brothers and sisters: Mrs. Lydia Helsel and Herbert Rhodes, both of
Elton; Mrs. Nora Thomas, of Sidman; Ross Rhodes and Mrs. Thelma Smay, both of Salix, and Carl Rhodes, of Beaverdale.

Maurice Kring Of Lorain Bor. Dies at Age 57
Maurice Kring, 57, of 123 Oakland Ave., Lorain Bor., died at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon at Memorial Hospital where he had been
a patient since Dec. 23. He had been ill for over a year.
A lathe hand at the Johnstown Lorain Works, Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation, for nine years. Mr. Kring had previously operated
an elevator in the United States National Bank Building and operated his own farm, located between Beaverdale and Portage. He left
the farm in 1929.
He was born in Richland Twp., on Sept. 12, 1889, a son of the late Louis Kring and of Elizabeth (Rhoades) Kring, who now reside
in Belmont.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Adella (Storey) Kring-Kring, and three children - Maurice Jr., Davidsville; Mrs. Ethel Runyeon, 123
Oakland Ave., and James, a student at State College. He also leaves four step-children - George Kring, San Bernardino, Cal.; Mrs.
Odessa Hazel, 417 Grove Ave.; Anna Kring, 1106 Cottage Pl., and Edward Kring, Phoenix, Ariz.
Friends will be received at the Henderson Funeral Home after 7 o'clock this evening. Services will be held at 3:30 p. m. Tuesday at
the funeral home by Rev. J. A. Robinson, pastor of the Walnut Grove Church of the Brethren.
Mr. Kring was a brother of Mrs. Sue Allenbaugh, Grove Ave.; Mrs. Eva Brumbaugh, Belmont; Mrs. Della Nearhoof, Cleveland, O.;
Alvin Kring, Troy, Pa., and Lawrence Kring, Huntingdon, Pa. Five grandchildren and six step-grandchildren also survive. Another
brother, Palmer Kring is deceased.
Mr. Kring was a member of the Park Ave. E. U. B. Church and the Lorain local of the United Steel Workers of America.

Palmer Kring, Lovett, Killed, Two Local Youths Hurt by Car
CANTON, O - (AP) - One person was killed and three others injured last night when an automobile occupied by four teen-aged
youngsters attempted to pass another car at nearby Minerva, Coroner Ernest Sturgis reported.
Sturgis identified the victim as Palmer Kring, 50, of Johnstown, Pa., and the three as Leonard Booth, 45, of Buffalo, in critical
condition; Willard Hicks, 17 of St. Michael, Pa., and Avery Ralivea, 17, of Johnstown, all taken to Mercy Hospital.
The coroner said the 16-year-old driver of the automobile was being held. He reported the four were employed by the Pennsylvania
Railroad at Bayard and were struck as they were walking along the Lisbon-Canton Rd. toward their camp.
Mrs. I. N. Kring, 1502 Menoher Blvd., whose husband, recently deceased, was an uncle of Palmer Kring, was notified by wire today
of the fatality at Canton. Palmer Kring, she said, had been an employe of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company for a long time. He
lived with his family near Lovett and she thought, was in the habit of returning home each weekend from wherever his railroad job
took him. His wife was the former Almeda Wingard and there are three children - Percy, Melvin and Ruby.
Palmer Kring's father was the late Lewis Kring and the deceased was born on a farm which his parents operated near Salix. His
mother, the former Miss Elizabeth Rhodes, now lives with her daughter, Mrs. Eva Brumbaugh in the Arbutus Park section of
Johnstown.
Willard Hicks, one of the two young men with Johnstown district addresses who were injured, makes his home with his mother,
Mrs. Fred Gray in St. Michael.

JOHN L. RHOADES COMMITS SUICIDE AT LLANFAIR HOME
Verdict of Self-Destruction Returned by Jury at Coroner's Inquest
DUNLO, March 1 - John L. Rhoades, aged 36 years, of Llanfair, near here,
shot and killed himself with a 32 caliber automatic revolver at his
residence yesterday. Two physicians were summoned immediately after the
shooting, but Rhoades was dead when they arrived, death being
instantaneous. Coroner M.W. Swabb, of Johnstown, was notified and came
here late yesterday afternoon and held an inquest. The Coroner's jury
inquiring into Rhoades' death returned a verdict finding that he came to
his death from a bullet wound in the head self-inflicted with suicidal
intent. An investigation by the Coroner showed that Rhoades had
purchased a box of cartridges for his revolver last Saturday. His wife
stated that he was in the dining room loading the revolver and after
telling him to put the gun away she walked to the kitchen. A few minutes
later she heard a shot and upon hurrying to the adjoining room she found
her husband lying on the floor with a bullet wound in the right side of
his head, just back of the ear. It is said that Rhoades had been in poor
health. The body was later turned over to Undertaker R.E. Donnelly, of
this place, to prepare for burial. Funeral services will be held on
Friday morning. Interment will be made in the Catholic Church Cemetery
at St. Michael. The Rhoades family formerly resided in St. Michael.
Rhoades is survived by his widow and three small children. About two
years ago his father, John M. Rhoades, was accidentally shot and killed
while working in a corn field near his home. His mother, three brothers,
and two sisters also survive.

MRS. SARAH LANGER
Mrs. Sarah (Wolfe) Rhoades-Langer 48, of 123 Woodvale Avenue, passed away
at 5:55 o'clock last evening at Mercy Hospital, where she was admitted
last Monday for medical treatment. Born in Johnstown, Mrs. Langer was a
daughter of Joseph and Alderetta (Meyers) Wolfe. She was twice married.
Her first husband John Rhoades, died February 28, 1922. She was wedded
December 10, 1936 to Albert Langer who survives. Mrs. Langer also leaves
two daughters - Catherine, wife of Earl Reed of 157 Prospect Street, and
Audrey wife of Jack Stephens of 719 Fairfield Avenue; two
step-daughters: Rose, wife of Fred Schellhammer of Maple Avenue, and
Alberta, wife of Elmer Kleinmeyer, also of Maple Avenue - and 14
grandchildren. The deceased was a sister of Mrs. Zita Leopold, Kennedy
Avenue; Miss Alderetta Wolfe, Lincoln Street; Raymond Wolfe, Moxham;
Joseph Wolfe, Robb Avenue; Mrs. Anna Brown, Franklin Street; William
Wolfe, Harrisburg; and Mrs. Emma Dunmire, Birmingham, Ala. Funeral rites
will be conducted Friday morning, at 9 o'clock in St. John Gualbert's
Catholic Church, Clinton Street. Interment will be in St. Joseph's

Mrs. Catherine Rhoads Reed, 79, of Oakwood Drive, Forest City, died Monday at the Rutherford Hospital. A native of Pennsylvania,
she was a homemaker; member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Forest City; daughter of the late John and Sarah
Wolfe Rhoads. She is survived by two sons, Earl and Harold Reed, both of California; four daughters, Mrs. Margaret Reed Spears of
California, Mrs. Shirley Reed Williams, of Pennsylvania, Mrs. Marlene Reed Thornton of Florida, and Mrs. Doris Reed Lindsay of

Miss Catherine Rhoads, daughter od Mrs. Sara Rhoads of 617 Maple avenue,
and Earl Reed, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Reed of Prospect avenue, were
married at 8 o'clock yesterday morning in St. John Gualbert's Catholic
church at a nuptial high mass celebrated by the Rev. Dr. Joseph D.
O'Leary, assistant pastor. Their attendants were Miss Helen Brown of
Wood street and Harry McClarren of Maple avenue. Miss Genevieve McKeown
presided at the organ and William J. Bittmer was the soloist, with Joseph
Quinn as volinist. George Brown, cousin of the bride, was one of the
alter boys. The bride was gowned in a powder blue dress and the
bridesmaid wore a French gray dress. Both carried tea roses. Breakfast
was served at the bride's home, were a reception and shower was held last
evening. For the present the couple will reside at 617 Maple avenue.
