Note that this information will be published on the web in order to attract student applicants and therefore be mindful of any Intellectual Property issues This project will inform the development and delivery of a tribal leadership programme. Indigenous leadership has taken on different forms based on changing historical tides – autonomy, imperialism, colonization, resistance, and renaissance. As contextual and community needs have changed, different types of leaders and leadership skills have been needed to create the opportunities and futures Indigenous peoples aspire to. The Iwi for whom this research is being completed is in the post-Settlement phase and embracing the opportunity to grow the next generation of tribal leaders who must be equipped with a tangible sense of intergenerational continuity, authenticity and diverse skill set to meaningfully 1 contribute to tribal development and increasing tribal autonomy. This project will involve researching global Indigenous leadership philosophies, models and programmes, particularly in New Zealand, North America and Australia, with the objective of identifying and synthesising approaches and content that could be incorporated into the tribal leadership programme to be delivered in 2016. The research will involve a literature review on Indigenous leadership philosophies and approaches, as well collating information on the provision and impact of existing international Indigenous leadership programmes. The student will work alongside the consulting team developing the leadership programme gaining experience in working within a collegial project team, the applied use of research findings and recommendations, working within a kaupapa Māori framework and synthesising abstract findings into tangible recommendations. The disciplinary expertise that the student will gain includes: understanding of the comparative experiences of Indigenous peoples, Indigenous philosophies and values and Indigenous leadership qualities. Specific student requirements Please provide details of all requirements you have for the student to work on this project – for example, if specific courses/experience are necessary. The ideal student will be personally committed to contributing to Iwi and Māori communities, have had some experience in a leadership role within a Māori context and have some understanding of te reo Māori. It is essential that the student has completed at least one 300 level Māori development or contemporary Māori issues paper including MAOR 301, HIST 379, MAORI 317.
