Job Description Head Football Coach – Middle School JOB TITLE: Head Football Coach WAGE/HOUR STATUS: REPORTS TO: Principal and Director of Extracurricular Activities TERMS: DEPARTMENT: Middle School PAY GRADE: Exempt 187 Days Teacher Pay Schedule PRIMARY PURPOSE: Under the direct supervision of the Director of Extracurricular Activities and the general supervision of the building principal, the head football coach organizes, coordinates, and promotes a comprehensive program of football that is designed to meet the needs and interests of the school community. Additionally, the head football coach coordinates boys’ athletic programs in all sports. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: The head coach serves as a positive role model for all students and is expected to demonstrate a high degree of professionalism and emphasis on academic achievement. Supervision is provided for assistant coaches, the athletic trainer, and other staff when performing work on athletic grounds or laundry. Financial responsibilities may include budgeting for and purchasing football equipment and coordinating transfer of football game receipts. QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum Education/Certification: Bachelor’s Degree in Education or Related Field Valid Texas Teaching Certificate Minimum Experience: Considerable coaching experience, including some at the varsity level. Or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the above noted knowledge, skills and abilities. Special Knowledge and Skills: Thorough knowledge of UIL rules and regulations. Thorough knowledge of football game rules, skills, and procedures appropriate for high school age students. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with students, staff, faculty, parents, and the public. Ability to use and maintain football game equipment. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITITES AND DUTIES 1. Plan, organize, and implement the teaching of fundamentals, strategies, rules, and proper conditioning of the game. 2. Ensure safety of participants by inspecting facilities and equipment and being aware of environmental conditions. 3. Assign, supervise, coordinate, and evaluates the work of assistant football coaches. 4. Coach and organize all football activities at the Middle School under the direction of the Head Football Coach at Longview High School. 5. Coach and organize the off-season program at the Middle School under the direction of the Head Football Coach of Longview High School. 6. Manage Middle School Gym during basketball season. 7. Inventory the Middle School’s football, track, and off-season equipment. 8. Submit requisitions to the Athletic Director for equipment needed for the Middle School’s football, basketball, track, and off-season programs. 9. Submit requisitions to the Athletic Director for transportation and meals needed for all Middle School football, basketball, and track activities. 10. Adhere to all district rules and see that all players have properly been certified for competition. 11. Submit all request made by the Athletic Director. 12. Follow all school policies pertaining to athletic insurance of Middle School activities. 13. Develop a public relations program to keep the public informed of the accomplishments and endeavors of the football program. Page 2 of 4 Job Description Head Football Coach – Middle School 14. Ensure compliance with all University Interscholastic League (UIL) rules and regulations. 15. Assist the Director of Extracurricular Activities in making football and other sports schedules and in preparing weekly game reports. 16. Make weekly grade checks on all football players. 17. Assume responsibility for the behavior of football players while involved in the football program. 18. Communicate with students, staff, faculty, parents, and the public, sharing information about the football program and encouraging student participation in various campus activities. 19. Utilize and maintain football equipment. 20. Comply with district policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations. 21. Adhere to the district’s safety policies and procedures. 22. Maintain confidentiality in the conduct of district business. 23. Must be able to perform the essential functions of walking and interacting with students and/or district employees in the specific work site assigned (classroom or office setting). 24. Demonstrate regular and prompt attendance. 25. Subject to assignment of other athletic duties. These assignments will be made by the Athletic Director. PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES Position requires performing tasks outside approximately thirty percent of the time and inside seventy percent of the time. Activities include demonstrating football skills and techniques, walking, standing, sitting, bending, lifting and/or carrying equipment weighing less than 25 pounds. HAZARDS/USUAL DEMANDS Hazards include working with groups of high school age boys as they participate in a physically active contact sport.
