KIZ Coordinator’s Report April 17, 2009 Mapping Status While we have yet to receive the formal letter of notification for the property modifications the maps have been modified and are now posted to the website and board link. Copies of all the KIZ maps have been sent to the regional economic development organizations along with the link to the KIZ website (www.nwcommission.org/kiz.html). Do to the size of the files it is difficult to send these maps via email. Please review them from the website or Board Link. Pending KIZ Micro Grant Requests There will be five companies presenting their micro grant proposals at the April 17th meeting beginning at 10:00 a.m. with Dynasty Software, Optical Filters, Abbatron, GNS, and Ernst Biomass. Limited copies of each proposal will be available at the meeting so I would request that you please print them from the attachments for your reference at the meeting. Forward Vision is preparing a KIZ Micro Grant request for the June meeting. KIZ Internships Service Contracts for payment of the interns have been distributed to the following companies. Optical Filters - 2 (Marketing and Technical Assistance posted at Allegheny) Clarion Research Group - 2 (Laboratory Technician and Scientific Literature Researcher posted at Clarion) Novocell - 2 (Electrical Engineer & Marketing posted at Thiel) Abbatron — 1 (Marketing posted at Allegheny) PSD -1 (Marketing posted at Allegheny) Additional internship descriptions may be forthcoming from Ernst Biomass. Presently we have two company (Optical Filters and Clarion Research Group) expressing an interested in internships for the Fall. The following internship descriptions have been approved by the Technology Investment Office for the KIZ partners. Answer Zone -1 (Student from Thiel chosen) Allegheny - 2 (Research for Tooling and Machining for CEED & 1 of 3 4-17-09 the NWIRC) Allegheny - 1-2 (Design/Marketing for Ernst Biomass & PSD) UPT —2 (Chemistry Research) KISK and KIG Letter of Support As suggested by the Technology Investment Office at the KIZ Coordinator’s quarterly meeting and noted in my report in March I have prepared a letter of support for the KISK and KIG Programs for Board approval. Both programs are vital components to the KIZ Program and it is important that the funding of these programs continue. A copy of the letter is attached. Contract Extension Letter A letter of request to extend the KIZ Contract to 6/30/2011 was sent to the attention of Sheri Collins at the Technology Investment Office on April 13, 2009. This request was made to give us additional time to meet our round one deliverables as well as round two deliverables upon approval of the NWPA KIZ and the BFTDA meeting in October 2009. April BFTDA Board Meeting On April 2nd I attended the BFTDA Board Meeting in Harrisburg to hear three KIZ presentations for additional funding rounds. This information will be helpful as we prepare to request our second round of funding. Pipeline Companies Approval/Confirmation Barnes Chem Tech – Incorporated 7/18/2007; under Advanced Manufacturing; Barnes Chem Tech does R&D and commercialization of petro wax products and is located in the Titusville Opportunity Park. Volt Vision – Incorporated 9/7/2007; under Advanced Manufacturing and Clean/Green Technology industry clusters; Volt Vision is involved with R&D and commercialization of intelligent LED lighting and is located at the Warren County Industrial Complex. I would request that the Board consider the approval or confirmation of the listed companies pending receipt of their registrations. Entrepreneur Training Opportunity Commercializing Your Idea, a training opportunity for entrepreneurs will be held at the NW Commission on Thursday, May 14th in cooperation with PennTAP. Flyers have been distributed to companies through the Clarion SBDC and I would request that you forward them on to any faculty that may be interested at the higher educations institutions. KIZ Coordinator’s Quarterly Meeting The KIZ Coordinator’s quarterly meeting is being scheduled for June.
