Guided Reading Lesson Guide
The aim of guided reading is to develop independent readers who apply strategies to
new text as they seek meaning.
Guided reading is the “heart” of your reading block. It is differentiated, very focused
and rigorous.


Phonemic awareness/phonics as needed
Strategy
Focus


Teacher identifies prior to reading
Use Houghton Mifflin strategy focus or skill

Teacher orally states an introduction that helps create a focus for
reading. (i.e. Today you are going to read a book called….In this
book, you are going to read a story about a bear who….)
Can use the introduction to pre-teach or model the strategy/skill


Identify connections that students are able to make
Focus on higher level thinking skills/comprehension
Picture Walk-Prediction-quick, chunk sections; minimize picture
walk discussion-let the author do the talking
Metacognition-thinking stems
Explicitly teach vocabulary words in curriculum guide (i.e. context
cards)
Focus on word meaning
Do NOT include round robin reading or popcorn reading
Split the book into sections for the reading
Set a purpose for each section…..students use meta-cognitive
strategies to problem solve
Teacher monitors and interacts with individual students while others
are whisper reading
When student finishes early, he or she will reread for fluency and
additional comprehension
This section of the reading needs to focus on the reciprocal
teaching strategies of: predict, summarize, clarify, or question
Provide opportunities for oracy/meaningful discussion
Focus on higher level thinking
Demonstrate a high level of comprehension

A book will last 2-3 days (average)
Independent Centers will start the beginning of September.
Guided reading will be in place by the first week of September.
Teachers will begin with the back-to-school lessons.
Subsequent days use decodables and or approved supplemental text.
Things to Consider:

Guided reading at the K level needs to integrate comprehension with decoding
skills.

Use “Cool Tools” to help with comprehension
* sticky notes
* sentence strips
* graphic organizers
* vocabulary word cards
* highlighting tape
* post-it flags
* white boards

Meet with every group each day

Activities do not belong in guided reading (gain clarification through Literacy
Coach)

Day 2 needs to include more time with reading and rereading text
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The Kindergarten day should be literacy rich with read-alouds, poems, songs,
and a lot of exposure to print and language.
