Oral History Workshop
Saturday, 29 October 2011
8 Stanley Street, Parnell
National Library of New Zealand, Auckland Service Centre
9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
This one-day workshop will be tutored by oral historian, Megan Hutching and Lynette Shum, Oral
History Adviser, Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington.
Registration will start at 9:15 a.m.
The workshop
 This workshop should be regarded as introductory for those with no experience of oral history
interviewing, and a back to basics for those with some experience.

The workshop will provide plenty of opportunity to gain experience and confidence in recording oral
history interviews. There will be practical exercises.

The programme for the day is below. While the workshop will keep to a timetable, the structure is
flexible to ensure that participants are getting practical experience and are able to ask questions.

By the end of the workshop participants should have a basic understanding of how to record an
oral history interview, and what to do with it afterwards.
The course is limited to 12 participants and will cost $100 per person. The fee includes morning and
afternoon tea. You will need to bring your own lunch, or there are cafes reasonably close by.
Please note: The workshop may be cancelled if there are not enough participants.
A follow up workshop will take place on Saturday 19 November 2011. This will build on
the introductory course, reviewing work completed and covering in more detail interview
techniques, project planning and technical, ethical, and legal issues. You must have recorded some
oral history interviews before enrolling for the second workshop. Email Megan for more
information.
