Coastal & Marine Team – Projects seeking NRIP funding Estuary monitoring – protect assets & improve management Brief Description (100 words) This project continues ongoing monitoring of estuarine condition at the heritage listed reach of the Glenelg estuary and the Surry, Fitzroy, Yambuk, Merri and the Hopkins estuaries. This monitoring contributes to the regulation and administration of artificial river mouth openings, the identification of emerging issues to estuary health as well as continuing to contribute to a long term data set for the purpose of determining trends in estuary water quality. Ultimately the estuary water quality monitoring project aims to improve knowledge to enable better protections and management of estuarine assets. Location The project will cover the entire Glenelg Hopkins coastal catchment monitoring 27 sites over 6 estuaries. VIF priorities addressed 5.7.3 General priorities To improve the information base, knowledge, and skills through better NRM monitoring and reporting To protect, enhance and restore assets and ecosystem services and enhance their resilience Theme based priorities: Estuarine, coastal and marine health To protect, enhance and restore highly valued estuarine, coastal and marine assets at risk To improve knowledge and skills to enable better protections and management of estuarine, coastal and marine assets Intermediate Outcome Increased or maintained institutional capacity of regional agencies to implement the RCS Performance Descriptors Increased or maintained institutional regional capacities to support the delivery of the VIF. Regions to document any significant activities around building CMA capacity that require funding to support. Units of Measure & Quantities No unit of measure. Our regions wetlands of national importance, Yambuk, Glenelg estuary, Long Swamp and Lower Merri wetlands will be targets for restoration and enhancement works. A review of the estuary habitat mapping report needs to be done to investigate threatened estuarine EVC's. Location The project will cover the entire Glenelg Hopkins coastal catchment. VIF priorities addressed 5.7.3 General priorities To improve the information base, knowledge, and skills through better NRM monitoring and reporting To protect, enhance and restore assets and ecosystem services and enhance their resilience Theme based priorities: Estuarine, coastal and marine health To protect, enhance and restore highly valued estuarine, coastal and marine assets at risk To improve knowledge and skills to enable better protections and management of estuarine, coastal and marine assets Biodiversity To protect, enhance and restore highly valued native vegetation at risk To improve the viability of rare species and ecological communities To minimise the threat of weeds and pests to highly valued biodiversity assets Intermediate Outcomes Habitat improved for biodiversity & Key biodiversity and other natural resource assets are protected by reducing the impact of invasive plants and animals. Brief Description (100 words) This project will improve the capacity of the ongoing monitoring of our regions estuaries improving on information currently available that supports management decisions specifically around artificial river mouth openings (ARMOs). A ‘trigger level’ review and adjustment will potentially allow greater environmental sway in ARMO decisions following the recent removal of some infrastructure pressures which will help protect our highly valued estuarine assets. Location The project will cover the entire Glenelg Hopkins coastal catchment with a focus on the Heritage Listed reach of the Glenelg River.
