~PASS FACILITATOR INFO~ BIOLOGY: MEIOSIS QUIZ Exercise summary. This class is designed to get the students to think about the process of meiosis and to visualise it diagrammatically without the aid of a textbook. Students will be assigned a stage in meiosis and will have to summarise it sufficiently enough, so that the class can pick the stage. Points will be allocated to groups that guess correctly. 1. Split the class into groups (ie. There needs to be 9 groups for each of the stages in Meiosis) and give group an answer sheet. MEIOSIS I - Interphase, - Prophase I, - Metaphase I, - Anaphase I, - Telophase I and Cytokinesis, MEIOSIS II - Prophase II, - Metaphase II, - Anaphase II, - Telophase II and cytokinesis. 2. At this point you have the option of allowing the class to briefly (5mins) look over a diagram of meiosis in their textbook if they feel they don’t know it well enough. 3. A representative from each group can pick a stage of meiosis out of a hat. 4. In a group, the students must summarise as best as they can the stage they have been given or draw it on the whiteboard, without the use of a textbook. Eg. INTERPHASE- chromosomes replicate during S phase but remain condensed, each replicated chromosome consists of 2 genetically identical sister chromatids connected at centromere, the centrosome replicates forming 2 centrosomes. 5. Groups will allocate on their answer sheet which stage they think it is by putting a number next to the correct stage (ie. First group is 1, second is 2 etc.). 6. Answer sheets will be handed into PASS facilitators at the end and points will be awarded for correct answers. (1 mark for each correct answer, with 1 mark allocated for every correct answer to the group which summarised that stage of meiosis). 7. Congratulate the group with the highest points!!!!!!
