Guidelines and Fieldwork Booklet for Unit 1 Natural Environments: HANGING ROCK AREA OF STUDY 1: Students must be able to identify the Geographic Characteristics, for example location, climate, soils, drainage, natural vegetation and topography of a chosen Natural Environment. Identifying the natural features from different kinds of imagery, topographic maps and fieldwork activities. Investigating the natural processes, including extreme natural events that create and change landforms, landscapes and environments. OUTCOME 1- KEY SKILLS: • conduct fieldwork at a local site and collect data; • collect, sort, process and represent spatial data related to formation of natural environments using a range of geographic techniques and media, that may include fieldwork data; • identify and describe the geographic characteristics of selected natural environments • analyse and explain data about the geographic characteristics of natural environments produced by the interaction of natural processes; • apply spatial concepts as appropriate. Task On the basis of your observations and fieldwork notes, you are to complete this fieldwork booklet as well as a Fieldwork test on THURSDAY 20 AUGUST on your findings and observations of the Natural Environment of Hanging Rock, which will be the basis for SAC 2. th TIMETABLE: Leave St. Joseph’s College: 8:00am Arrive at Hanging Rock: 10:15am Morning Tea: 10:15-10:30am Ranger Tour: 10:30-12:00pm Lunch, Cricket etc: 12:00-1:00pm Straw’s Lane (Optical Illusion): 1:00-1:15pm Leave for School: 1:15 Stop in Elmore for bathroom break/food: 2:45pm Arrive at School: 3:15pm Questions: 1. Describe the Geographic Characteristics of this Natural Environment? What is the present land use? List the Vegetation that is present? What types of trees are only present on the Rock? What animal or bird life is present? List one unusual or eerie fact about the Rock Describe the prominent geological formation (type of volcanic landform) How has it changed over time (Spatial change over time) 12 marks Hanging Rock Fieldwork Booklet Term 1 Now list some of your own Geographic Characteristics: Remember to use questions from text (how is it changing, how will it look in future, etc) 3 marks 3.In the space below complete a sketch of Hanging Rock and the type of Volcanic Landform. 2 marks 4. Describe the natural processes causing change to Hanging Rock such as, weathering, erosion and drought. Create a series of diagram or sketches that show the impact of the factors at a variety of stages in the development of landforms. 4 marks 4 marks 6. Describe why human processes such as deforestation, tourism, pollution, fires and the designation of National Parks, cause change to Hanging Rock. 4 marks 7. List one fact that you did not know before today. 1 mark Hanging Rock Fieldwork Booklet Term 1 8.
