HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION DAY

The Solid Waste Management Department of Brunswick County is pleased to announce the upcoming Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on Saturday, April 16, 2011. Individuals are urged to drop off items between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., at the parking lot of

Brunswick County Government Building, 100 Tobacco Street, Lawrenceville, VA. (Note: materials cannot be accepted before or after the stated hours.) The Household Hazardous

Waste event is for Brunswick County residents only. A current driver’s license, County I.D. card or Vehicle Registration is required to show proof of residency.

Materials that will be accepted for responsible disposal on April 16, 2011 are:

Unneeded household hazardous waste in sealed containers (use original containers when possible)

Oil Based Paints, Stains, Thinners & Strippers

Solvents & Varnishes

Adhesives, Glues, Resins

Waste Fuels (kerosene, Gasoline)

Engine Degreaser, Brake Fluid, Transmission Fluid

Poisons, Insecticides, Weed killers

Wood Preservatives

Hobby supplies, Artist Supplies, Photo Chemicals, Chemistry Sets

Dry Cell Batteries, NiCad Batteries, Hearing Aid (Button) Batteries

Cleaners, Spot Removers, Swimming Pool Chemicals

Aerosol Cans

Propane Tanks

Fluorescent bulbs

What not to bring

Asbestos

Smoke Detectors, Fire Extinguishers

Compressed Gas Cylinders

Ammunition, Fireworks, Explosives

Prescription Medicines/Syringes

To Ensure Safety:

 Tighten caps and lids leaving materials in original labeled containers.

 Pack containers in sturdy upright boxes and pad with newspaper.

 Sort and pack separately: paint, pesticides, and household cleaners.

 NEVER MIX CHEMICALS!

 Pack your vehicle and go directly to the site.

 NEVER SMOKE while handling hazardous materials.

 Do not place waste in a garbage bag.

The County also offers other ways to get rid of hazardous wastes:

 The County’s Recycling Program accepts motor oil, used oil filters, auto batteries, and other recyclables as: corrugated cardboard, waste paper (newspaper, office paper, magazines, copy paper, junk mail, etc), aluminum cans, foil and pans, plastic 1 & 2, white goods, textiles (clothing and shoes only) and scrap metals at locations listed below.

 The Recycling Drop-off Centers are opened five days a week (Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat 7 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Sunday’s 1-7:00 p.m.) at:
