Before Reading
Vocabulary: Introduce the words and have the

Activate/Build Prior Knowledge:
Use each of the children’s names in the group to
introduce syllables. Count how many syllables are in
each child’s name.

ever visited the city? What was fun about both of
your visits? What didn’t you like?”
Have the syllable sort cards copied and cut. Give a
set of cards to pairs of students. Have them sort the
cards into numbers of syllables.

During Reading
Using appropriate Guided reading strategies, students will be reading at their own pace and teachers will
be listening to students read, monitoring, giving feedback, taking anecdotal notes and running records.
Students will mumble read the text. Teacher taps in to hear individual students read. Take
anecdotal/running record notes.
Suggested Pacing:
Day One: Do the whole lesson plan
Day Two: Read other stories in the book and have students make Venn Diagrams comparing books

After Reading
What did City Mouse like about his visit to the country? What did City Mouse not like about his visit to
the Country? What did Country Mouse like about his visit to the city? What did Country Mouse not like
about his visit to the city? What did the mice learn from their visits?
Go back to the story and use the pictures clues to see more similarities between the city and country.
