Please understand that the details of this contract reflect our concern that both the new owner and adopted
animal have a happy life together. The conditions set forth below have been based on years of experience. We
feel that we have a continuing commitment to see that our rescued animals find a safe and happy permanent
home. Considerable emotional involvement, time, money and energy go into insuring that each of our rescued
animals will have the best start in their new life.

For and in consideration of the receipt of the above-described animal, I, the above named Adopter, agree to the
following list of terms:
1.
This animal is a companion animal and is not being adopted for slaughter, factory farming or re-sale.
2.
I understand that this adoption donation is non-refundable.
a. Upon signing this agreement I agree to pay in full the monetary adoption fee in the amount of $_________
This adoption fee has not been received by CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE, there is $_______ currently

b. Any animal that is not picked up within one week of adoption will incur boarding fees. $25 minimum per
week unless prior arrangements have been made.
c.
Any deposit made is non-refundable.
3.
To adopt, love and provide reasonable care for the animal. To provide sufficient food, vitamins and
water to maintain a healthy body condition. To provide adequate shelter, farrier care and humane treatment at all
times. Adequate shelter shall be at a minimum a run-in shelter with a roof and dry footing under cover.
4.
If this is an older animal, I agree to take extra care required of this animal. To include but not limited
to, senior feed and extra dental care. Failure to provide any care recommended by a veterinarian, farrier and/or
any other specialist shall be breach of this contract and CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE or any of its
representatives may peaceably enter any property on which the animal is kept, and reclaim it immediately. This
contract will become null and void if such action occurs.
5.
To keep said animal as my own personal property at all times. Not to sell, barter/trade, loan, give away,
transfer ownership, abandon, or dispose of said animal in any way. If the animal is no longer wanted, or can no
longer be kept, it shall be returned to CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE. Return of the animal shall be at
Adopter’s expense. Adopter shall notify CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE immediately if Adopter is not able to
care for the animal any longer. Adopter shall NOT place the animal in the custody of anyone other than CENTRAL
VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE without written permission of CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE. Adopter shall
contact CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE immediately if Adopter is unable to pay current board and care for
the animal. CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE shall be listed as an alternative contact on any boarding, vet care
or other contract regarding the animal.
6.
To notify CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE within 48 hours of death, loss or movement of said animal
and I will keep a current address on file at CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE.
7.
This animal is not to be bred. Breeding will be considered a breach of this contract and CENTRAL
VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE and its representatives shall retain the right to determine if such breeding nullifies the
contract. If this contract is considered null and void, CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE may peacefully enter
onto the premises and into the facilities where the said animal is being kept, and retake possession of the said
animal.
8.
Although CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE makes every effort to assure that the background is known
of any female animal, there is a possibility that any female maybe pregnant. If the animal gives birth to any baby,
the baby will be also carried under this contract.
9.
If I adopt a male animal that is too young to geld, I agree that animal shall not be allowed any contact
with female animals prior to being gelded. I further agree that said animal shall be gelded by six (6) months or
upon the dropping of both testes by a licensed veterinarian with full sedation. If the colt is a cryptorchid (fails to
drop both testes) by age one (1) year, I agree to have a licensed veterinarian perform the necessary surgical
procedure.
10.
If at any time this animal is found to be in unsatisfactory condition, or CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE
RESCUE determines that it is not being properly cared for, CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE or any of its
representatives may peaceably enter any property on which the animal is kept, and reclaim it immediately. This
contract will become null and void if such action occurs. Adopter shall give all necessary releases for CENTRAL
VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE or any of its representatives to contact and obtain any records regarding the animal,
including but not limited to vet, farrier and police records.
11.
Except under extreme circumstances, if said animal is sick or injured, I will not have said animal
euthanized without first consulting with CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE even if I cannot afford to have it
treated.
12.
I realize that every reasonable effort has been made to disclose the history of this animal AS
CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE KNOWS IT. These are rescued animals, and in some circumstances we may
have little or no knowledge about the animal’s prior life or training. CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE has told
me everything known about the animal; however, we cannot make any guarantees about an animal’s
temperament or training.
13.
I understand that CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE and its representatives are not liable for any
injury to or death of anyone as a result of any action of the adopted animal. Any animal carries an inherent risk.
Adopter agrees to indemnify, defend and hold harmless CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE, its volunteers and
Board members from any liability resulting from this adoption.
14.
To procure veterinary care at once if said animal becomes sick or injured. If Adopter is a
veterinarian or vet technician then “veterinary care” will be assumed.

To provide CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE with a copy of an annual vet check. The first vet
check is due six months from the date of this Agreement. To provide CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE with at
least one annual photograph of the animal, any other animals it is pastured with, the shelter, the fencing and any
other photographs that may be requested by CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE or any of its representatives.
17.
To obey any and all animal control regulations governing the area in which I live. Failure to obey any
state or local law regarding animal control and/or welfare shall be deemed a breach of this contract, and this
contract will be considered null and void.
18.
To allow an CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE representative to examine the said animal and its
living conditions with or without receiving notice of any visit.
19.
In the event that CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE determines that I am in breach of this
contract, this contract will be considered null and void. If this contract is considered null and void, CENTRAL
VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE may peacefully enter onto the premises and into the facilities where the said animal is
being kept, and retake possession of the said animal. I also understand that if this contract is rendered null and
void by my breach of any term of this contract, I will not be entitled to any reimbursement of any funds
whatsoever.
20.
In the event that it is my fault that this contract is rendered null and void, I agree to pay any and all
reasonable attorney’s fees and all court costs of CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE, in the event any matter
arising under this contract is forwarded to any attorney for enforcement of CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE’s
rights and remedies under this signed contract. I also agree that if it is my fault that this contract is rendered null
and void, I shall pay all costs associated with my breach including, but not limited to, vet or farrier costs resulting
from neglect/abuse of the animal while in my care and transportation costs.
21.
Although all information that CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE has on said animal is released to
the Adopter, I do understand that CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE is a rescue service and is in no way
responsible for the accuracy of information received about temperament, habits, or physical condition of the said
animal that I am adopting.
22.
I agree that I will notify CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE immediately of any permanent location
change of the said animal.
23.
I hereby give CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE permission to provide my first name, city
where the horse is located, and other relevant information, on their website, Facebook and other public places
they deem appropriate regarding placement of the animal I am adopting. I further grant permission to CENTRAL
VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE to share pictures taken by them or provided by me at any time on their website,
Facebook and other public places they deem appropriate regarding placement of the animal I am adopting.
24.
Upon the signing of this contract, I acknowledge that I have read, understand and agree to be bound
to CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE’s contract.
25.
I understand that this contract is entered into in the State of Virginia and will be interpreted and
enforced under the laws of this State even if the animal lives in another state.
26.
If the animal has registration papers and CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE has possession of said
records then CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE will retain registration papers for a period of 30 days. After a
30-day period, CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE will transfer papers to the Adopter so long as Adopter agrees
to register said animal in Adopter’s and CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE’S names as co-owners. Failure to
include CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE’S name on the registration papers shall render this contract null and
void. If this contract is considered null and void, CENTRAL VIRGINIA HORSE RESCUE may peacefully enter onto
the premises and into the facilities where the said animal is being kept, and retake possession of the said animal.
