Left click again to drop drop the label. Press Esc to end… end… Students were asked to read handout ST. word ST power point was then used. Students were split into two groups(although this is not necessary)They were told that the word was something to do with the information they had just read. One member of one team then comes up clicks on W1(bottom row) and a blank appears(in this case the word entrepreneur would not be there) The team member then clicks on any letter at the top or bottom, if its in the word the letter/s appear. The rest of the team are able to make suggestions after asking permission to do so!. If it is not the letter turns red. When the team get it right add up the ‘reds’ and then let the next team member from the other team do the same. In the meantime everyone highlights the word in the text. After all words have been completed add up the scores! Now the class transfer the words (in order) into their handout and write down the definition or explanation.-could just do the first 5 the rest then form a homework. Now introduce dropST power point. Ask individual students (volunteers or conscripts)to drag and drop each ‘card’ in turn into either the benefits or drawbacks. Ask the student to elaborate as to why it is a benefit or drawback. After class agreement ask students to write the information in the appropriate section of their handout. Then ask the next ‘volunteer’ etc etc. Now introduce bingo ST power point. Students draw up a 3 by 3 grid (9 squares) They then pick any 9 words from the 12 given (‘go to balls’ first!) Then click on ‘press’and the balls will juggle. Then get a student to click on R of release balls – a definition will then appear. The students then cross the word this refers to off, if they have it. Do this until ‘S’ is reached . The students can play for a line(straight or diagonal) This activity encourages further understanding and retention of information. NGf L CYMRU GCaD Then a full house. However to ‘win’ they have to read the word and the definition out ! The other activity could be used for revision. Activity 1 continued In the matching game 6 words/phrases appear and flash and their corresponding definitions appear. Students are asked to watch. Then choose pupils to click on the bottom ‘arrow bar’ and then W1 to go to the first game and so on. The idea is to match word and definition (give one or two goes) then get the next student to do matching game 2(bottom arrow bar again) etc! Activity 2 (lesson 2) Repeat the above- hand out relevant notes. The same activities relevant to a partnership are contained here. Activity 3(lesson 3) Introduce drop match (a review of last lesson) Students can drag and drop definitions and explanations next to each other! Now introduce ‘game instruction’ power point-ask students to watch. Appoint two accountants who can update the graph below when the screen returns to it. Handout relevant notes. This game emphasises certain skills in the skills framework such as working with number and thinking. It also provides a forum for discussion regarding the running of a business. Now introduce game ST power point The first student clicks on ‘start M1’ NGf L CYMRU GCaD The following screen appears. The student is allowed 5 clicks to reveal 5 different pictures(These represent various things about the sole trader business) the class are asked to circle the 5 on their sheets The ‘free bonus’ is now clicked and the power point reveals a graph. Click Auto to gain an automatic £5000 profit for this month. Then the top bar to return to the game board. The next student clicks M2 and the following screen will appear. They must check to see whether this particular picture was revealed earlier. The teacher can now talk about the point raised, in this case illness and ask questions. The student can then click ‘?’ for a question or ‘W’ for the word game. If they click ‘W’ the following screen will appear. The student then clicks W1 to go to the word game. The idea is to get the correct word within 10 reds to gain another £5000. After completion click on the arrow and the graph will again be revealed. Click on Auto to gain the automatic £5000 for the month and then either +1 or +2. (+1 if either they matched the picture or got the word right within 10/ +2 if they got the picture and the word right!) Then click the top bar to return to the game and the next student clicks on M3 etc etc. Note if they chose ‘?’ instead of ‘W’ then if they get the question correct the first time then the screen automatically returns to the graph and the same rules apply. . If they get the question wrong incorrect appears. The student clicks on the arrow and the screen returns to the question. It will only return to the graph when the answer is correct however the student only gains the relevant profit if they NGf L CYMRU GCaD answered correctly first time. They can still however gain +1 if they matched the picture earlier. The class are asked to update their graphs on a monthly basis! At the end of the game they all update their graphs and figures. A discussion can then take place as a plenary about some of the issues covered such as the importance of market research/ business planning etc GAME P (partnerships) works in much the same way except the profit is measured in £10,000 units to suggest the greater earning power of this type of structure. This game is played using different students than before. Activity 4 (lesson 4) This lesson follows the same pattern as activity 1. The handout is given out. The word game covers the LTD and PLC structures. The drag and drop activity is used to emphasise the similarities and the differences between a PLC and a LTD. Activity 5(lesson 5) This lesson again follows the same pattern as activity 1. The focus here is on social enterprises in particular the cooperative structure. The students were also asked to complete an examination style question from a past examination paper on this topic. Any good text book will also have suitable questions. Activity 6(lesson 6) As for activity 1. The lesson focuses on the charity organisation. The drag and drop activity asks students to consider aspects of charity organisation. All the answers are covered in the relevant handout. The power point (public benefit) was used as a basis for considering what is a public benefit. Eight students were asked to play the role of individuals who wished to set up different charities(the students were given the relevant information from the handout public benefit..) The rest of the class were able to ask questions about the project. Then the class decided whether they would allow the charity NGf L CYMRU GCaD application on the basis of whether they thought it was for the public benefit or not. They were asked to justify their decision( Each role player stood in front of the screen as they were asked questions.)Note this also works well if the teacher takes the role/s! Activity 7(lesson 7) A consolidation activity. The students were split into mixed ability pairs and were given the task of completing the handout in rough on separate paper(or sugar paper)/This would also work as group work. Or pairs could be asked to concentrate on one or two sections depending on the group ability. The drag and drop activity was used to encourage discussion on the previous activity. Students were asked to place the structure card in the positions they thought were most appropriate and then justify their choices. Activity 8 These are a selection of multiple choice questions relevant to this area. They can be used for revision or as lesson reviews. Any relevant textbook or examination questions can be used in conjunction with any of the resources here. There are also some very good TV programmes that can be used to supplement the material. For example dragons’ den. Role plays are also available on their web site. Overall All these activities were also used by year 12 students. They particularly enjoyed the novelty value of the activities and I would definitely recommend using these resources to introduce these topics at AS level. Make sure that you know which words are coming up on the word game and also that you have your projector switched off before you start the individual games otherwise the slides will be viewable by students in advance! Be prepared for an argument regarding the ‘words’ VAT, PLC and LTD or not as the case may be if you use this for year 12 though! NGf L CYMRU GCaD
