Introduction
Good morning students
Good morning sir
How are you al today?
We are fine sir.
[ claps hand to gain students attention]
What did we learn in last class?
We have learnt about the force and
types of forces that we find on the
nature.
Yes we learnt about force. So how can you define
Force is anything that can bring
force?
change in direction, speed of the
moving body and change in shape of
the body.
Good! Please take your seat.
[teacher pauses for sometime]
Now students, let us do simple demonstration. So
Students rubs their finger no the
can you rub your finger on your table?
table.
What did you observe students?
Heat is produced and our fingers are
getting hot.
Why do you think it is getting hot?
It is due to frictional force acting
between the finger and the table.
Excellent! Please take your seat. Yes it is because
of friction. So today we are going to learn about
friction, methods to reduce and increase friction.
[ teacher writes topic on the board]
Lesson Development
Look here students. [teacher claps his hand]
[Teacher slides book on the table]
Why this book is not continuing its motion?
Very good! Please take your seat.
Now can you define friction in your own words?
It is due to friction because of
friction acting between the m.
Friction is anything that opposes the
motion of the moving body.
Yes you are right. Friction is force which either
reduces or increases the motion of the body.
Did I make it clear?
Yes sir.
Activity 1
Now students I have an activity to be done in
groups. Can you breakup into two groups of four
Students divide into two groupsGroups I and Group II.
members.
Now listen carefully. Your task is, Group I will
discuss on the ways to reduce friction and Group II
will find some ways to increase friction. I will give
you three minutes to do your task. After that i am
going to ask any one of you to present your work to
the class.
Did I make it clear?
Yes sir.
What did I say?
[ students are make to repeat the
instructions]
[teachers moves around and monitors the activity]
Time finished students. Please look at board.
Now Group I can you present your work to the
We can reduce friction by:
class?
i. Use of lubricants: oil, water,
grease acts as lubricants to
reduce friction.
[teacher write the points on the board]
ii. Use of rollers: ball bearings,
wheels can be used for reducing
friction. Rollers and wheels can
be used to move heavy loads.
iii. Streamlining; fluids like water
and air exerts resistance to a
moving body through them and
produce friction. In order to
reduce friction, the body is
streamlined.
Thank you Group I. You did a vey good work. Now
group II can you present your work to the class?
Some ways to increase friction are:
i.
By making grooves: tyres of the
vehicles have grooves that help
t increase friction and prevent
tyres from slipping.
[teacher writes the points on the board]
ii.
Making surface rough
iii.
Making spikes on the soles of
the shoes.
Thank you Group II for your good discussion.
Yes sir.
Are you clear with all those ways to reduce and
increase friction?
Activity 2
Now I have a simple activity for you all to be done
individually.
[teacher gives students number 1 and 2] Those who
got no. 1 will find advantages of friction and no. 2
will find disadvantages of friction. I will give you 1
minute to think. Now you can go on with your
work.
Time up please. Now no. 1 what are the advantages
[expected answer]
of friction?
Friction helps us to walk, sit and do
many activities.
Good. Now no.2 what are the some disadvantages
that you found?
[expected answer]
Friction opposes the motion of the
body. It reduces the efficient work
of machines by providing the
friction to the moving parts of the
body.
Good. Thank you all for your work.
Closure
So today we have learnt about friction. Before we
close our lesson, let’s recollect what we learnt.
What is friction?
Friction is force which either
reduces or increases the motion of
the body.
Good! Can any one give three ways to reduce
Some way to increase the friction
friction?
includes:
i. Use of lubricants
ii. Use of rollers
iii. Streamlining the body
Excellent! What are the ways to increase friction?
Friction can be increase by making
body rough, making grooves and
spikes on the required body.
Good! It seems that you have understood today’s
lesson. So as homework, solve questions given on
page 103 and also read today’s lesson. Tomorrow I
will ask questions. Are you all clear?
Yes sir.
Thank you class!
Thank you sir.
ANALYSIS REPORT
Introduction
The microteaching presented on 17th September, 2009 on the topic ‘Friction’ form the class
viii science test book was observed by lecturer Mr. T.V. Thomas. The lesson was planned to
teach for the duration of 15 minutes, mainly focussing on the practising skill “Stimulus
Variation”.
Before presenting my lesson, I sat for the preconference with my observing lecturer and
discussed about the practising skill and my lesson plan. After having done with
microteaching I went for the post conference to discuss about the positive and negative
aspects of the lesson.
Overview of the lesson
I have begun my teaching by greeting students and asking how they are doing. I asked few
questions about the previous class. In introduction part I made my students to do a simple
demonstration, where I made them to rub their hand on their table and make observations.
This demonstration made students aware of the topic that they were going to study. After
outlining the lesson, I explained them the topic with a simple demonstration, which was
sliding calculator on the table. I made students define “Friction” after making the observation
from the above demonstration.
I even gave students to work in groups, where they were divided into two groups. Group I
was given work to find the ways reduce friction and Group II to discuss on the ways to
increase friction. I also gave students second activity to find out advantages and
disadvantages of the friction. This activity was given as individual work.
In closure part, I asked few questions to the students as a revision for the lesson. I also
assigned my students some homework to be done and asked them to go through the lesson I
taught them.
Positive Aspects
The positive aspects provided by my observing lecturer Mr. T.V. Thomas, during the
microteaching for the practising skill ‘Stimulus Variation’ includes:
i.
Introduction was good:
My observing lecturer commented that my introduction for the lesson was good. I gained
students attention before introducing the topic. I asked questions about the previous lesson
and acknowledged students for their responses. Introducing the topic in proper way makes
the lesson to follow in sequential and is one way to motivate students in learning.
ii.
Activity followed the steps:
While giving them group activity, I gained the attentions of the students by asking them to
look at the board and making statements like listen carefully before giving them instructions
for the activity. Directions for the activity were directed clearly and checked the
understanding of the directions. Checking the understanding of the directions will make
teacher know whether students understood the directions so that they will be able to perform
their activity in right way. After giving instruction i have monitored and guided both the
groups to do their discussion.
iii.
Used board to write students points:
I have written the points of their discussion on the board and made them to explain those
points to the class. Points that I wrote on the board were made to copy on their book so that
students can refer it as notes.
iv.
Questioning was good:
Questions that I asked during my teaching was directed to whole class and given all the
students with equal opportunity to answer the question. After giving questions I paused for
two to three minutes, giving time to students to think and answer. Students was
acknowledged and reinforced for their response.
v.
Good interaction between teacher and students:
I was also commented by my observing lecturer that I kept good interaction between the
teacher and students through asking questioning and answering. During course of teaching I
asked lots of questions and made students t think and recollect. So through question I kept
good interaction with students as they to response and I acknowledge them for their
responses.
vi.
Closure was good:
In closure part, I evaluated my students understanding through asking them questions, so
that I could reinforce major points that we have learnt in a period. I even assigned them few
questions to be done as homework, so that they can learn what we have studied in a period.
Good closure can bring lesson presentation to an appropriate conclusion. It will help
students to bring points learnt in their class to their mind.
Negative aspects of the lesson
Some of the negative aspects pointed by my observing lecturer are:
i.
Use of OK in the beginning:
My observing lecturer commented that I was nervous and used OK for several times while
introducing the lesson. Since OK is not my habitual word, in later part he told me that I
haven’t used it. Teacher should eliminate speech mannerisms like use of OK, since this is
going to distract or annoy the students.
ii.
Voice not so audible:
I was also commented to raise my voice and make it audible to whole class, so that students
will be motivated in learning and kept attentive in class. Teacher needs to speak loud
enough for all class to hear since audibility is one of the important tools for the teacher.
iii.
Didn’t write topic after introduction: I forgot to write topic on the board after introducing
the topic. I wrote only after giving the instruction. My observing lecturer told that teacher
should write topic on the board before entering the main part of the lesson, so that students
will know what they are going to learn. It is one way to gain students attention.
iv.
Minimum interaction between P-P during activity: There was a minimum interaction among
the pupils during their activity since the activity was simple and little but the time allocated
for the discussion was more. So teacher should monitor and guide students so that there will
be more interaction among students and also with teacher.
v.
Less use of teaching aid to explain Friction:
I was commented by observing lecturer that I could have used some more teaching aids to
explain friction. I used only calculator to demonstrate the friction. Friction is one topic
where teacher can teach with demonstration of many examples with use of different
teaching aids. Teaching aid helps students to learn more about the topic that his teacher
teaches him and understand more.
vi.
Activity II didn’t follow the steps:
During my Activity II, I gave clear instruction but clarity checking was not done and
activity was also not monitored. As it was given as individual work, i thought it was not
necessary but my observing lecturer commented that it is important to check clarity and
monitor the activities that teacher gives to his students.
vii.
Time management: my observing lecturer also commented that I have poor time
management. I almost took 20 minutes to teach the lesson that was planned to teach for 15
minutes. Time for any lesson should be properly managed so that everything would finish in
time. Time management is one important tool for the teacher to teach his lesson effectively.
Future commitment
The positive aspects that my observing lecturer commented are not to be kept as it is; rather I
am going to focus more on those while doing microteaching in up coming skills. I will resume
all those positives aspects as it is going to enhance my teaching learning process. I will bear
all those negative aspects that I have received from my observing lecturer in my mind and try
to illuminate all those aspects.
In next micro teaching, I will prepare before hand so that I will confidently teach my students.
I will not use mannerism words like OK as this is going to distract and annoy students. I will
commit myself to improve my voice and speak louder so that my voice will be audible to
whole class. In next microteaching I will never forget to write topic on the board as soon as
introducing the lesson. When ever I give group activity I will monitor well so that there will
be more interaction between pupils and make all of them participate in their activity. I will
teach every lesson with the use of more teaching aids and demonstrate more examples so that
my students will learn more. When I give any small activity I will make it follow with the
steps and monitor the students in doing the activity. In upcoming microteachings I will plan a
short lesson so that I will be able to manage my time and finish my teaching the allocated 15
minutes. Those negative will the encouraging points for me as I can focus more on improving
it and try to illuminate all those negative aspects.
I will bring improvement to all those negative aspects by committing in seeking helps,
advices, research, analysis and preparing before hand. I will take all those comments into
consideration and teach the next skill’s micro teaching effectively and fruitfully. The skills
that I have finished will be also kept practicing while doing micro teaching on upcoming
skills.
