The WIDA CVC Chart above indicates the difficulty of language -- the challenge of language -- that it’s reasonable to require from an EL at a given proficiency level. As ESL teachers, when we look at texts assigned to students, one question we should ask is: Based on what WIDA tells us about a students’ English Proficiency Level, is this a reasonable text for that student? Our job as ESL teachers, then, is to locate and advocate for proficiency-appropriate, thematically-related texts. In other words, if 6th-grade is focusing on texts thematically related to The Civil War, and if the WIDA Levels tell you that a reasonable expectation for your Level 3 student is for him or her to handle ● “a series of related sentences” (not moderate discourse), with ● “general and specialized vocabulary” (but staying away from too much “specialized and technical vocabulary”) Then if your job is to assure that the student has a text he or she can read (can interact with in a meaningful way to further his or her learning), it’s fair to ask yourself: Is a sixth-grade, young adult novel appropriate for that purpose? And then it’s your obligation to find the thematically-related text that will help the student. A first step is to find the reading levels of each of the anchor texts. I’ve started that by looking the books up on Scholastic’s Book Wizard. If you want, contribute to the efforts. http://www.scholastic.com/bookwizard/ WIDA C-V-C CHART 1 – Entering 2 – Emerging 3 – Developing 4 – Expanding 5 – Bridging Linguistic Complexity Single words Phrases, short sentences Series of related sentences Moderate discourse Complex discourse Vocabulary Usage Most common vocab.
